we dont need no target man, although point taken that keogh is more than that

wide forward will be needed to replace boyd/cunningham

midfield is fine

defence is a creeping up as a worry with 3 starters ageing, ernie will perhaps be looking at that big time in the off-season.

if burns or roly were to go then further re-assessment required...

I'm fearing the worst to be honest, in that one of Burns/Roly will be offered silly money in Asia during the off season. Both would really screw us.

The club must be aware that this is a likely scenario, so if they are true to form so far they will have a contingency plan.

Just watching the CCM game and noting the skill of Storm Roux. Hes got real talent and considering our fullback situation he would be an excellent fit, in particular due to his attacking attributes and skill on the ball which is exactly what Ernie said he wants. Anyone reckon he'd be worth a bid*? Other players I reckon we should take a look at:

Deklane Wynne - Young prospect who didn't look out of place in the All Whites

Scott Basalaj - Young keeper who I've heard good things about. Would at very least be a good backup keeper and being a free agent will be a cheap pickup

Cam Howieson - Haven't seen much of him at all but could we not call him up on an injury replacement and atleast se if he is worth a contract? Nothing really to lose?

*Roux may not be immediately possible/ completely impossible but what would people think of the thought of him joining?

Wynne or Doyle. Either all for me

Roux can't defend, Fenton can. Roux is very suspect at the back

Howieson - to come sit on the bench? He is not better than what's current starting plus Lia on the bench and Hicks is there and known quantity. Probably as cheap.

Roux: from an AW point of view I would rather not have him here competing with Fenton. I know others have their doubts on Roux but I think he's a decent A-League player and should be starting in this league given the other RB options about. don't think Roux would be happy not getting first team footy.

Wynne: good player. I am one of the minority who thinks Doyle will come good so similar argument as Roux / Fenton. Good LB's are like hens teeth in A-League so if Wynne was keen being a squaddie for a season or 2 then I would seriously consider him. Norwich are in line to nab him though by all apparent accounts ;-)

Howieson: He needs game time at this stage of his career (who doesn't though, eh?). He's over in england and should look to continue there if he's built up good contacts. He has the benefit of a Euro passport (I think -  Scottish dad according to wiki). Not sure if he's the same sort of player as McG. Would be interesting to see how he fits after a trial. Perhaps. We do have some depth at MC and AMC (e.g. Hicks, Rufer, Ridenton) so I don't think it's critical.

Basalaj: We have excellent keeper depth at the Nix. If he wants to stay in NZ then perhaps pick him up but again he has Scottish passport and is hopefully looking to get back into footy over there after his sojourn in the 'Rapa.

Unfortunately none of these guys are under 20 eligible which would have been advantageous.

Why post this? We would never get any of them. And it can't be that correct if you've got Winston Reid who has just signed a long term deal with West Ham.

Main thoughts behind Howieson is a) hes not a bad player to have in the squad if injuries should occur to any CM heading into playoffs b) Should Roly depart in the summer (winter) c) Regardless of who it is we call up is it not a good idea to pick up somebody on an injury replacement incase of injury in the playoffs?

Sporting Kansas City pulled out of signing van der Vaart cuz he wanted too much! If the MLS can't make the finances work, there is no chance of seeing someone like that in the A-League.

Be nice to see some of those players in a stripy tho.  Those are notable players,  I bet there are hundreds of players like Greenacre and Iffs that are also coming off contract

I actually could see that happening, considering Ernie got us to table an offer to Griffiths before he was injured again. He's obviously looking for an experienced striker in the squad, and MV will need to trim their squad to keep FBK, Finkler and Delpierre.

Plus the Ernie + NZ link (albeit that's a tenuous one).

Unlike most on this forum I'm a big fan, though his legs are going - he's still quite good off the bench.

Guessing from this garbage article http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/football/a-league-confidential-central-coast-mariners-think-long-term-with-john-hutchinson-an-heir-apparent/story-fnk6pqha-1227306811595

When an article claims La Rocca to Glory & McBreen to the Jets, I don't hold much faith in it. Archie was 'linked' with us last off season as well, its lazy speculation with very little basis tbh

Looks waay too manicured for the Nix, in a Ian Rush sort of way.  We prefer our matchwinners to be the rugged, rough-and-ready types, with more google-eyed staring at the ref, the teammates and the opposition.

One quick thing on Archie - I would have him in a flash even at 36! After discovering that I am able to support Joel Griffiths in a Nix jersey - I think I can live with Archie! Also, Ernie and Archie go back a long way so I wouldn't be surprised if Ernie gave him a call at the end of the season

You know what will happen though, he will have some sort of season ending injury for us at a critical time of the campaign. Although our miedical and conditioning staff seem to be amongst the best in the league, it would just be our luck.

A 37 year old is quite a gamble.

You're spot on and that's very possible - but he is still one of the leading goal scorers (if not THE leading one) in the league.
If you get him to do a job off the bench he could be lethal. And he knows full well he would get more opportunities playing for us than for MVC.

This being said, I'd like us to go off and find the next Burns.

Assuming that all that speculation is true, I'd be okay with  it if WelNix wanted to cash in on Burns. They want to make this club financially sustainable and a $350k cash injection would pay a significant chunk of the annual operating costs. Sure, you never want to see good players go but if you don't he'll go a year later for free anyway, and with his injury history he could miss a lot of games anyway.Plus now we're title-challengers, enticing a replacement to join us should be easier.

I don't think the $350k goes to us though. How I was reading it is that he has an out clause in his contract that if after season one he got an offer of >$350k we'd release him. We won't get anything (other than cap space to sign someone else).

It is all speculation of course, but I would be surprised if the Club gave him the security of a 2 year contract and a release clause without any recompense for a release. Surely it would kind of be a quid pro quo scenario?

The article itself just said the clause would be triggered by an offer of $350k - didn't actually say whether that was an offer to Burns or an offer to the club. Probably neither and its all a BS story anyway!

It's got to be to the club doesn't it? When you talk of transfer fees its the cost that another club pays to the player's club for his contract. anything else is reported as a signing bonus or the like. Its nonsensical to think a club could offer Burns $350,000 and he could simply say 'goodbye' and the Phoenix get nothing.... come on don't put this thing through the complicator guys.
