I don't know where this thread has gone but i thinks it's a reflection on the poor recuitment/ lack of recuitment this off season by the nix.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

Are we going to sign this triallist?

I would.  I thought he looked fairly sharp going forward.  Certainly adds another dimension being able to push up both flanks.  Looked like he had a handy left foot on him too.  But sure where that leaves Doyle though.  CB convert perhaps?

Doyle seems more CB than WB to me. LB seems like a nice compromise for him.

I just hope Dura and Siggy can knock it out of the park .

We really need them to make the plays this year.

No other option tbh

Theres an article on four four two quoting Ernie saying the phoenix have the money to sign a big name player if needed, but it looks like the last 2 signings will come from within New Zealand possibly including a player whos been training with the reserves for a while.

wondering if this is a gambit in signing someone from overseas?

This is likely to be Tam? Or one of the others?

It mentioned a defender who has been with the reserve team for a while, probably Tam.He also said he likes the option of being able to add a veteran in in january like Griffiths this year. Not sure what that means for Donaskos.

It would have to be either Tam or Danaskos, not both right?

So we have Manny, Fenton, and Danaskos covering fullbacks and Sigmund, Dura and Doyle covering CBs?

I would have thought the defensive player in the ressies pointed directly at DiMairo. Perhaps with the 2 spots left, 1 is for him and the other is for January.

Danaskos might be eligible for the Mature Age Rookie spot, so we might have 3 spots to fill. No confirmation if we are using that tho

Im thinking A-Rod will be our 3rd choice CB.

I think it must be some sort of school assignment, as there are others e.g.

Pretty hilarious though.

Doesn't a mature age rookie still take up a spot - it's just outside the cap?

Would think Doyle would be our 3rd choice CB now.

Outside the cap & squad limits.

The mature age rookie rule is a new initiative from Football Federation Australia which allows a Hyundai A-League club to sign a player in addition to their maximum squad of 23 and outside of the salary cap, as long as the player is over 21 and has not played professionally in the last 18 months.

From Sydney FC's press release when they signed Alex Mullen.

What position does this January guy play? Is he any good?

Not at all keen on either Manny or Vinnie starting a regular season game at CB. Pre-season trial = ok. Injury cover = not ideal but may get you out of a tight spot. Starting in regular season = find another option.

Along with that signing the  other name i heard mentioned on Sunday was Gully, word was they are waiting on some fitness issues apparently.

My first thought, when Merrick mentioned a player from reserves for a while, was Gully so yeah I reckon it'll be him.

My take on the whole third centre back - three at the back thing is that none of Lia/Manny/Rodriguez will ever play as one of the main 2 (unless really desperate) and that's never been Merrick's intention. As Dura mentioned on Phoenix City pod Lia and Rodriguez will be dropping back from midfield to be a temporary CB when we lose possession. The only reason they've played as one of the 'proper' CBs in pre season is to get used to the duties of the role.

The big benefit of using both full backs high at the same time is that you should keep possession better so the need for that DM player dropping deep won't be required too often.

I think this very much is the implementation of a 2-3-2-3 and if understood and bought into by players could be very successful.

Fark I'm fired up for an actual competitive game! Less than two weeks!

I noticed on the 2nd goal (I think) for Auckland City that the defence were having a go at Alex for being out of position. Think he got dragged out a bit and got a bit lost. This structure would've been a lot smoother if Alex had not be injured all pre-season, hope we'll be ready to go come Oct. 11th!

Yeah I dunno if Rodriguez will start the first match there. Suspect it'll be Lia until Rodriguez has a bit more time under his belt.

Big question for me is whether Riera is actually good enough for the role in front. I'm not sure he is and would like to see McGlinchy paired with Bonavacia - and have Powell up top flanked by Krishna and Sarpong.

Plus Arod for CB

And I think Doyle covers both, although arguably less CB and more LWB. With Manny preferred at CB.

And I think Tam is likely to get a spot.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

That's a fair call. WeeMac and Bonevacia could use some better on-field understanding; IMHO. Not sure if anyone else commented on this but there were quite a few missed passes between just these two last season (maybe I noticed them cause I expected better of their interplay).

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Manny is better as a back up right back than as a back up left back.

at the end of Ernie's first preseason we played acfc and signed hicks and Riera, just as last minute.

And this A Rod into defence thing is totally a tactic barca and spain use with busquets. Site search zonalmarking for some nice diagrams, possibly even a gif. Even the McGlinchy as a forward reeks of barca and Spain's use of false 9. Gareth will be pleased :p

Totally agree. Biggest question is are we good enough to pull it off (at A-League level) and/or are we three years behind the curve and it's an outdated method that won't work against today's defenses?

I feel like everything could go really well and we'll win every game and finish with 81 points.

But in all seriousness I CAN'T WAIT!!! Start the season!!!
