PS Ian Harte (only 37) would sew up LB for a season. And probably score more than once.

Nicky Maynard wouldn't be a bad option up front - 28 and hasn't really got a hopes of top half championship etc after leaving cardiff.

Also Cardiff good prep for Wellington.

My 2nd club Peterborough had Mackail Smith back on loan for a month or so and he was terrible,he has a bad run with injuiries in the last 2 years,at his best he would be a brilliant signing but sadly I think his best days are gone.

Duff actually had a good campaign before his injury. I'm surprised they let him go.

Not exactly prolific. As a squaddie perhaps but can't see him leading us to glory with 15 goals a season.

I thought he wanted out to return to Ireland?

He got injured then went back to Ireland for rehab; think he will stay there.

Yep, he was very clear that he was only here for 1 season before going back to play in Ireland.

Dzugandzic could work anywhere on the wing. RB, RB, RFW. Not that prolific, true, but if Fenton plays up front sometimes, I am sure he could do that as well. And he would be amazing cover for our back line/MF. 

Did Ernie coach him at MVC? That could prove quite useful if we try to sign him.

Yes he did, and he was behind recruiting him to MVC when Mate returned from Croatia (he went there from Melbourne Knights).

Interestingly, Mate Dugandzic left MVC at the same time as Ernie (different circumstances though).

Dugandzic was an amazing player in his late teens and was widely expected to go on to bigger and better things as a teenager, but I have a feeling he is going through a lengthy slump now. However, the same happened to other talented youngsters before, including one N. Burns, so hopefully Ernie might see the potential in a once-promising player who is only 25.

Dugandzic is basically the Australian Fenton;  we need a striker, not another winger that has the yips in front of goal.

What if we signed him as DF/MF cover?

Id have him over Fenton.

i know looking at 35+ year old strikers is tempting but its not a good long term option.

On present form - I agree.  However, this discussion hinges on if what we've seen so far of Loiue is the best we'll ever see from him.

If we concede that Louie is still "work in progress", and that Mate D. has already peaked, then sure enough I will agree with you. However, if Dugandzic could be returned by Ernie to his previous classy form, then the plot thickens.

As I recall it, Mate Dugandzic arguably played his best football in HAL during the two seasons under Ernie. I can't remember him having yips in front of the goal then.

I think he would be handy back-up as a wide forward, but with Appiah here there's probably not room.

I hope no potential signings are in town at the moment to check out what Wellington has to offer...

Ernie currently in Europe looking for a potential forward and CB. Might I recommend Christiano C Ronaldo. He got a decent goal scoring record and scored some vry spectacular ones.

So no archie?

On one hand I agree with you - and looking at form, his story is quite similar to Burns (though I think Burns is a much better player and has a higher ceiling.). I wouldn't be surprised if Merrick picked him up. I just haven't seen anything from him for the last few years (to be fair, he was  injured for part of that)

Also think that we have enough of his type in the squad.

He's quite quick though iirc & would seem to fit the Ernie mould.On a par with Appiah at the very least (imo)

With the salary cap though, I'd rather we keep the money for a left fullback and a striker than pick up another wide attacking-minded player because he *might* shine under our coach. If Burns goes, Dugandzic could be a good pick up but at the moment we've got other priorities and limited cash to spend on them. Oh yeah, and we need a backup CB too.

But even if Burns stays, we only have him, Krishna and Apiah, following the departure of Cunningham and Boyd

Funnily enough he was quoted as saying he wanted to go back and play where it was wet and cold, I think he found the summer league odd

McGlinchey tends to play up front, it seems Ernie wants to sign an import striker, and there's a good chance of a forward or two being promoted from the reserves.

Two points I'd like to make.

1) Older striker not a good long-term option: Fair enough. However, if we signed a younger player who ends up doing extremely well, we will have to sell him after 1-2 seasons max, especially since most players in the league are only given 2-3 seasons contracts. So not sure whether getting an older, proven goal scorer each year would be a terrible idea, especially if he is going to be paired up with good younger strikers out there.

2) If we do  sign an older striker, I would hope that we: - not have to pay a transfer fee

                                                                                        - sign someone who hasn't got a history of injuries

                                                                                        - sign someone who is proven at A-League level.

3) Let's sign Archie!

                            

Don't think we need to be worried about the club paying transfer fees, deifnitely not going to happen 

What we need is a marquee striker...
