So he'd be happy to play merely for us to forget this incident?

Who knows? He was rumoured to be one of the backers of the South Sydney bid trying to kick us out too, so I don't think he's pro-kiwi football!

I was just posting that article about his tackle on Bertos as an explanation of why I don't like him after MetalLeg was saying he was a great guy. He probably is a great guy off the pitch, but I still think he's a knob. I exercise my right as a kiwi football fan to hate a legendary Aussie player who tried to break one of our player's leg in a friendly just before our first World Cup in 28 years!

Even a lot of Aussie football fans think he's a knob.

Behind Herald Sun paywall:

Kosta lot to take Barbarouses back

WELLINGTON has tabled a tantalising multimillion-dollar marquee offer to Melbourne Victory winger Kosta Barbarouses.

Multimillion dollar?

I doubt it, unless its over 4 or 5 years and has plenty of performance clauses.

$750k per season multi-year deal according to that article.

I'm always dubious when a newspaper manages to quote an exact figure like that. They also say it's triple his current victory salary.

I find that hard to believe.

He is the sort of player we need if Ernies style is going to work. Plus he offers a good work rate on defence which would help!

At the suggested contract level ?

So he would cost over a quarter of the total annual salary for all 22 or so non-marquee players in the squad?

Personally I don't care what players cost - as long as we can afford it and it won't send us into bankruptcy.

Doubt the figure. Doubt he is worth half of that. Then if we are getting ripped may as well get ripped  by a kiwi player

Auckland will rise once more

I don't know enough about comparing a-league salaries but the value isn't just what he brings to the pitch here - he's a well known all-white, a role model to young kiwis, he does flashy things which people like on highlight reels, and I imagine the nix would market the sh*t out of him as a true blue kiwi marquee.

So I'd say he's definitely worth more to us than the equivalent ability aussie or import, but have no idea how 750k compares to others of a similar ilk in the league.

Costas Signed a multi year deal with the Nix

But Ernie doesn't use wingers?!?

Perhaps a deal pushed by the board/FFA rather than Ernie?

(Great news though :-)

So apparently Kosta will be on more than Berisha, more than Fornoroli. That is the calibre of player you can get for that sort of money. And more than Ono was at WSW...

I find it hard to believe. But were looking gold with potentially two visa spots. Will be interesting to seed if Powell is more productive with his tail up.

no confirmation from either club or the player or his agent in there... So it's really no different to earlier reports about this move

Well its well circulated in the media. He's going to have to work hard to bring value to that price.

Permalink Permalink

It's hard to believe that Berisha and Fornaroli should be on less than Barbarouses. Barbarouses has had his best season since returning to the league. I think he has 9 assists but many of those have been to Berisha, one of the best strikers in the league. I think if we sign Barbarouses it means we should look elsewhere for our 5 foreign player spots. Maybe Barbarouses would be able to score a lot more goals now he is the main event.

Oh yeah, I think it'll happen. I just think it's a little early to say it's a certainty. I also don't believe he'll cost as much as they are saying. Could be crossed wires - 750k for 3 years rather than per year, or something like that

That would 'only' have him at the same salary as at MV. I'm sure that he is more a little valuable to us as he doesn't count as a foreigner while he does for other HAL sides - they would have to weigh up his salary against what is available on the world market, and it might be the price of luring a player from the defending champs (and admittedly one of the larger HAL clubs) to us.

Fair point, maybe somewhere in between then?

Without really knowing how much players are paid in the A League, my gut feeling is that 750g a year is too much for him in terms of the value he would bring us. There was some talk in the last few days about how this move might meet one of the metrics of the FFA but I can't see that either. I base that on the fact that Kosta is already in the A League so how great an effect will he be on getting significantly more bums on seats. If the FFA were wanting us to bring in top name marquee/s, then I don't think he fits that criteria either. Don't get me wrong, it will be great to have him back but if the report is correct, I'd love to see the business case for justifying it [just out of interest mind - its their money so they can spend it however they like].

I feel Kosta is more valuable to the league at the nix than anywhere else. This is probably the only club where he will actually put more bums on seats. Maybe not significantly more, but you would think more.

Agree. Ernie will make him even better. And for NZ club a top kiwi player is the perfect fit, he is local bauy and equally exciting as all the other marquee imports. His shirt will be number one seller.

He will succeed Siggy in the "homegrown" hero role.

Would some of his salary count under the cap because he counts as 'homegrown'?
