Everyone says how small Singh is.... but looking at that photo it looks like he has bulked up a bit since last year or is the photo simply adding 10 pounds?

I'm Beijing based and was gutted I couldn't go.  Instead watched it live on local TV from about 15 mins in.  Have to say considering at this stage of the pre-season it was pretty encouraging in terms of a continuation in the style of play (lots of short passing, through the middle) and the addition of Kosta and Finkler will no doubt add to our quality.

Beijing BG play in the tier below the Superleague.  Their level of play is probably on par with a mid-low level HAL team, mind you they were resting or missing their imports.  Where as the top tier competition is pretty decent buoyed by very good imports and improving technical skill of Chinese players.

The weather conditions speak for themselves - Wind, Rain and Phoenix in Beijing.

A few highlights here http://sports.qq.com/a/20160728/011935.htm

Finkler's FK was a peach, however sharke their GK and conditions were.

Kosta and Finkler seem to have been working very well together in preseason. Exciting stuff.
I'll be feeling a hell of a lot better about our chances if we sign a couple of defenders
I agree completely. Teams like the Phoenix need quality defenders and GKs in the HAL with many teams dominating possession stats which then nullifies the attacking players in the Nix to feeding off set pieces and fast breaks. A great defence can frustrate quality teams. So a marqee centre back or centre back combo could really complete the squad.

Thanks for highlights. I like how they're wearing the FFA Cup kit.

And did they sing Pokarekareana before the match? (As our anthem?) If so that's a step up on Zimbabwe using the proposed alternate flag for the current test!

The team travel to Townsville for a camp and game against Melbourne City in early September, before heading down to New South Wales for a game against Central Coast Mariners.

The Mariners then follow them to New Zealand to play in Nelson on September 24.

There are some grabaseat deals which include tickets, flights and accommodation still available for the game in Nelson. Look like a decent price. Stand by for details of a pre-game bar etc

Is Roly listed as a defender a typo, or is he likely to fill that role more this season.  I think he has played at the back in the Netherlands?

Not sure it's where he can be most effective for us...

I thought one of the reasons he re-signed with us was because he was enjoying playing further forward and had assurances that would continue. Or at least there was a rumour to that effect.

I don't see him starting as a CB ahead of Rossi, Dura or Fox, and I don't think he's quick enough to be a FB in Ernie's system. Maybe he can cover the back line if we get hammered by injuries and suspensions but I doubt he'll play regularly back there.

Interesting that Liam Wood has been with the first team most of pre-season, played in a decent Central league side and a full ASB Premiership season but gets overlooked for the U20s.

I was under that impression too.

Any chance we may play a back three?

Please, anyone can play FB in Ernie's system. See; Ridenton, Matthew, Fenton, Louis Ferenc Puskas.

I said not quick enough. Both those guys are faster than Roly. Especially Fenton. Ernie likes his FBs to overlap and get involved further up the pitch, but that means they have to be able to get back fast if the ball is lost. I can't see Roly doing that, especially as he has a tendency to throw little pouts and lie on the pitch or stand round looking pissy if he loses the ball.

I agree that Ridenton and Fenton shouldn't be FBs either, but that's a different conversation.
