Surely some mistake? Our shark defence chosen by our incompetent gaffer must have shipped at least 5 by now.

Ernie said in an interview earlier this week that its going to be intensive training sessions this week and then the game so wouldn't be surprised if we fade and city come back at us.

On the other hand, the goal we did concede was to a past it semi-retiree who wasn't even good enough to graduate from Samoan age group sides to their senior squad when he was in his prime

He had another goal offside as well. You can deride him for his age, etc. But he still gets Australia out of shark most of the time.

Probably never been to Samoa and as his father was English probably did not qualify.

highlights? Maaaan I hope Finkler keeps a few of those to unleash in the regular season. Two free kick goals in one game? How many did we have in the whole of last season?

yawn. Even Ernie admits we need more bodies in defence. a 4-1 pre season win doesn't change anything.

I think he's an asshole and it pisses me off that the richest club in the league gets his salary subsidised by the FFA.  For those reasons I hope he fails miserably in the A League.

That doesn't stop me from wanting him to. Hell, I would laugh if he suffered a career ending injury early on. I still remember him trying to break Leo's leg in that pre-WC "friendly" at the MCG

I bet you would not be making any comment if the FFA  was paying him to play for us. Get the chip off your shoulder, this is an Australian league and we should be very happy to be in it. At least it gives NZ players something to aim for.

If you're not allowed to be biased as a sports fan it kind of defeats the purpose of being a fan doesn't it?

And it's not about him being an Aussie player being subsidised, it's about the fact that the FFA changed the rules to help the richest team in the league out financially. Just like when they changed the rules to let the club they owned have 2 more imports than everyone else.

You're allowed to hate villains: Grella and Cahill were absolute cods of the highest level in that game. Cahill has never to my knowledge apologised for tackles which should have had him receiving game bans in any other league. It was a completely miserable mean-spirited thing to do to players who had managed to qualify for the highlight of their career and for many of us fans the highlight of our NZ football fandom.

The fact that the club is nominally salaried capped and that the richest club is smashing holes in the 'rules' and Cahill is one of the beneficiaries of this doesn't help. Add to the rumours that the campaign to kick out the 'Nix was in part fueled by a desire to get in a new Sydney club with Cahill heavily involved.

Sure Cahill has had a great career for Everton and for the Socceroos. I can respect his football.

Sure you want the best Australian players back in the A-league promoting it.

Cahill deserves our disdain the same way Kevin Muscat does. Football is heroes and villains.

And I can bet you while we'd most likely be very happy to have Timmy if he were here (though he never would as he probably wouldn't be much of a Kiwi drawcard and that'd be half his marketing value wasted), they'd also be a massive discussion about it and I'm sure Conan and others would have something to say....

Just because it's an Australian league doesn't mean anything anyone does we should say- thank you very much, sir. It was to our credit we didn't kick them back in that pre-WC friendly, but I will laugh if someone from another Aussie club kicks lumps out of him and all the hype and cash is wasted.

The other thing is just six months ago he was spewing crap about A-League. He's probably an asshole, I know plenty of Australian fans don't like what's going on with Ca$hil either, but he's no Muscat. And we forgave Sigmund the two footed stomp on the UAE.

So glass houses, you know?

Wonder what the discussion would have been like had we lost to City. What a crack up. I'm still on a weekend football high. Chatham Cup was great. Promotion relegation emotion. And now a Phoenix win. Cahill has felt our lash. Now for a starting Right Back please Ernie.

Depends on how we lost. If it was due to defensive issues, then we'd be saying how we need a RB, or a DM. If for other reasons, I imagine it would be panic stations.

not really.

You are saying that because Siggie did a stupid two footed tackle in the UAE, that I shouldn't still be angry with Cahill trying to injure players pre-World Cup? Or that because he did that I'm not allowed to be angry or talk about it? Bit of false equivalence.

Do you propose we give him a guard of honour? Or have banners up at Westpac welcoming him?

It'll be one of the interesting things about this season. If he hadn't been such a jerk there'd definitely be less edge to games against his team. Makes it even more pleasurable to beat New Bling/Scum 4-1, but it'd be nice to do it all season too.

While I don't hate Siggy for the stomp, I can totally see why a neutral, let alone a UAE fan, would. The stomp did make me think a lot less of Siggy though. That went well beyond rugged hard man who gives a bit of niggle and doesn't back out of challenges and deep into malicious criminal assault territory.

If anything it sounds like we'll at least be a force from the set piece this season, so that's a nice change.

Attack seems on point though, so more interested to see how the defence is shaping up heading into the season, considering it went MIA too often last season. Intrigued to see what Marco Rossi brings to the table, as well as if Dylan Fox has made some progression from a seemingly promising start last campaign.

Hopefully some defensive reinforcements coming in the next couple of weeks, as we're looking horribly short if shark hits the fan with injuries and suspension, which is inevitably going to happen.

We are at 18 senior deals, so couple bodies have to come in for sure. Sounds like we are staying in Sydney this week, so maybe D'Cunha and some other trialists might pop in to training sessions?

Reports are that City played a back 3 of Champman, Malik & Brattan but that doesn't take away from 2 free kick goals for Finkler.

Need highlights! There was footage all over twitter of bloody warm-ups and other marketing rubbish, did they turn the cameras off when it kicked off???

Also Finkler x2 free kicks wereagainst Sorensen in goal. This is a guy who's been setting up walls and making saves from the best in the EPL over the last few seasons.

I mean..the rules ARE different for us already - we are allowed to sign both Kiwis and Australians as 'locals' A club like MV uses an import spot on Rojas. Edging towards agreeing with Leggy here which disturbs me.

Cahill is still a cod, but a talented one.

Tweets from North Queensland Fury lead me to believe that a Rossi mistake led to Codhill's goal.
They also mentioned that the goal was very much against the run of play and we should've been at least one up at that stage.
Mentions us being very structured and composed and dominating the majority of the first two thirds of the match - then a whole bunch of subs and it opened up. Think Moss did quite well at the end to keep City to 1.

True, but then our license conditions are way tougher it would seem. So you know, swings and roundabouts...

I still hate Cahill.

Also, does that mean that I'd be allowed to bitch about it if I supported one of the other Aussie clubs?

Great win against a rich team full of 'stars'

Ernie seems happy how we played, and the twitter was full of praise about our structure. 2 golas from freekicks, this a good way to win games against dominating sign and could make a big difference at the end.

As fans we should have a designted villain in every team: Beserk, Codhill. Who else?
