Sounds like phoenix have a bit of link with West Brom now with Ernie Merrick spending a few days there in may with Johnathon Gould who's now their goalkeeping coach.Gould apparently helped line up Alex Jones for the phoenix and was disappointed it didnt happen,he also said stating the obvious that Merrick is looking for defenders.

We have a visa spot and it will be used on a CB, just gotta hope he will be of a high enough standard.

I'm hoping our starting CB pairing is Fox and new import - with Dura as cover.

Fox was good, but Siggy was better when he came back. Dura will be the starting CB with Fox hopefully pushing for the starting spot by the end of the season.

Also we should look at getting Adams back, one of the few standouts at the nations cup.

Thought Adams was good. though he maybe VPL good. The A league would be much tougher than the island teams IMO. While we didn't put the sides away consistently or well, they didn't offer a lot of goal threat. Adams would be fourth/third choice too, if we get another top drawer defender, so maybe it is better for him to stay put in the Aussie state leagues for the moment? The South Melbourne lot will be happy.

Stat:

Luke Adams scored more goals and fluffed less chances than Brockie in the final 3 games of the ONC, when both were present. Several seasons ago, Brockie scored 16 goals for Nix. Also several seasons ago, Luke Adams played for Nix.

So, what I'm really saying, is we should sign Luke Adams on a marquee deal to replace Roy Krishna.

Using that logic we employed Benji Totori because he was a beast at the ONC in Honiara, the previous time.

Brockstar is still quality. The fact the tactics were long throws and boot the ball away didn't help. It really was like Herbert in that there was no central attacking plan- except that Herbert a) put his best players on the park b) tried to get in good assistant coaches in Brian Turner, Trani and yes, Emblen who contributed a good deal to the team.

The use of Dyer and Prelevic was odd. I thought Brotherton and Colvey came back well, but still wouldn't be the guys you'd want facing up to players from Mexico, Brazil, Chile or whoever ends up the fifth placed qualifier....

Would a Championship level player be aiming too high wages wise you think? David Wheater, Anton Ferdinand & David Eager all have EPL experience, are in the 29/30/31 year old range and have been released by their clubs.

Too high... we'd be looking at a League 1 level player IMO. Plenty of experience in the lower leagues, never quite made it to the top who may be keen to play abroad and do something a little different.

Unless they want to avoid places like the Ukraine, Turkey, or the middle east and bring their family somewhere culturally similar to what their used to. Wasn't that one of the reasons that Stein signed for us?

Turkish Coffee is good but it's hard to beat a classic Wellington flat white (which was invented at Bodega many, many years ago).

Still disappointed Totori wasn't used as cover for Dura. Absolute class, the way he abruptly halted any attack near him.

Turkish coffee is generally brewed in a pot (over coffee grounds) and served black. In contrast, here in New Zealand we perfected the art of the flat white although I favour double shot latte. Always excellent everywhere.

You probably never had to suffer a coffee served to you at 4pm from a Kona filter pot that was made at 10am and stood on the hotplate all day long till 4pm (Christchurch Parkroyal Hotel, February 1991), as happened to me when I first visited NZ.

Yarn. Flat whites have existed since the early 80s at least. Bodega opened in 1989.

Interesting debate. Current wikipedia version of events;

"The earliest references to the beverage date to Australia in the mid-1980s. The first documented appearance of the flat white is at Moors Espresso Bar in Sydney, where Alan Preston added the beverage to his permanent menu in 1985. Preston subsequently opened six more flat white outlets around Sydney's Chinatown area and this is most likely where the flat white gets its Sydney start.[7][8] Alan Preston's seven flat white outlets around Sydney, starting in 1985, constitute the basis for the flat white's rapid take up.[9] Melbourne's claim to substantial influence on the Australian coffee industry follows significant immigration of Italians following the Second World War,[10] and the introduction of espresso coffee machines in the 1950s.

The Wellington claim tells the story of the flat white being invented as a result of a similar "failed cappuccino" at Cafe Bodega on Willis St in 1989.[11] The Auckland claim is attributed variously to Derek Townsend and Darrell Ahlers of Cafe DKD, developed in the "late summer" of 1989 as an alternative to the Italian latte.[3][12]"

Yeah, that's what I heard too. But Miller came to Auckland from Wellington and I seem to recall that he'd already learned to make flat whites there, and he showed the DKD guys how to do them.

Here is the guy that claimed he invented it at Bodega in '89;

http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/food-wine/food-n...

But it seems fairly locked in that a flat white was on the menu in Sydney by 1985.

Then also this from the above article;

"Craig Miller, who is about to release his book Coffee Houses of Wellington, 1939-79: The Pre-Espresso Period, said many laid claim to inventing the flat white but it was a "generic drink" with no clear original.

He remembered making a drink called a flat white in Auckland in the mid-1980s using a recipe from Australia. That version was a double shot black coffee with a jug of milk on the side."

Sorry, assume off-topic hand slap is coming my way, duly noted.

The story I heard was that the modern flat white was invented in Bodega, there were other similar coffees before that.

If we're talking about the Wellington Coffee scene we should talk about the real innovation that Carmen had in the 70's which was merging Cafe's and Brothels. There was a code about how you placed the cup on the saucer, which direction the handle was facing indicated what sort of escort you wanted. It would probably be awkward if you went into one of her cafe's looking for a coffee and ending up with something else, especially if you placed the cup the wrong way.

Sadly that innovation didn't catch on like the flat white.

Is that why the last time I had a coffee someone came up and gave me a handy?

Basically, you can get quality players who might be looking for another chance if they fall out of favour, etc.
