And your reason we should have more than one is because other teams do?

A better reason would indicate how it/he would improve the Phoenix (I'm not saying he wouldn't just saying that because other teams do, isn't a strong enough reason to dictate that we should).

I would not dismiss that reasoning sentiment. It works at least in some cases.

Like, an argument for an automatic 20-year license.

It's clear that the team requires a shakeup and there is no reason why it should only happen with the playing squad and not the technical managers. This also doesn't mean sacking Greenacre, other A-League sides have multiple assistant coaches so there is no reason why we should only have one.

We now  have more than one. The GK coach has also assumed other coaching duties

Okay, well tactically we have been found out every season and have been unable to adapt. Tranni has been very successful wherever he's gone and his last two teams have been very attack orientated.

Even last year when we were leading the league teams figured out how to beat us, it was even worse this year. When we deviated from the game plan and tried something different (like the game against WSW) then things looked more interesting.

I think about people who make things work with what they've got. Even someone like Gombau who was married to a system would shake things up like replacing a striker with a CB in order to try and win a game with a last gasp set piece.

The reason I said getting a second assistant rather than replacing Greenacre is I don't want to see a club legend leave. But if the fact that other teams (who are more succesful than us) have two assistant coaches and a goal keeping coach isn't reason enough to go with two assistants then if succesful and able assistants are on the market we should be seriously looking at replacing Greenacre, I'd just personally rather we didn't.

But I would take a Rado or a Tranni over Greeny right now based on form.

Something needs to improve. We're giving Merrick and Greenacre the benefit of the doubt because of mitigating circumstances, but something isn't working 100% and we should have finished higher. If talent is available why not look at hiring?

I think that our form has been so awful that we should seriously look at officially hiring a Team Juggler, if there's money in the budget for it. Something desperately needs shaking up so why not give it a go?

I'd be glad to have him back as Assistant Manager.

Agreed. I like Greenie but unsure how much he actually brings to the table. I think having an opinion that may deviate from Ernie's strict gameplan might be helpful to create a bit of discussion amongst the coaching staff.

how do you know that doesn't happen now?

I don't, but I think it's a fair assumption that a former player with no other managerial experience would not speak up as much as a guy like Trani when things are going wrong.

I can't. But if Greenacre is really in charge of corners and free kicks I must say I'll find his work pretty unimaginative.

Luci back would be great. He was the brains behind the few seasons we did really well. One only had to show up at training to see who was the the organiser and motivator. Sure Ricki did the odd thing here and there but he spent a lot of the practice sessions standing around watching Luci running the show.

It is hard to judge assistant managers - as fans we can't see their work directly.

We do know that Trani is a better scout with better knowledge of the Aussie leagues than Greenacre, which will help us bring in extra players.

We know the Phoenix improved once they had Trani compared to the assistant they had before that (Wayne someone ex-Central Coast?)

We also know that Melbourne City improved once they had Trani; and Adelaide also improved once they had Trani.

Obviously there are a lot of other factors that affect a team's performance besides their assistant manager.

When he speaks in the media, Greenacre doesn't sound particularly tactically astute, authoritative or credible. There are no visible signs of him improving his ability in the last three years.

Just because a player finishes their career with the club does not make them a 'legend'. The club's ambition should be to win the league, not be a "jobs for the boys" situation for retiring players. I'm not saying Greenacre should be out of a job.

But signing Trani would definitely improve the management. (although he did move back to Melbourne for family reasons, so he may not want to return to Wellington)

That said IMO Greenie is a legend. Really good club player- the kind we are losing in Sigmund and Manny.

and part of one of the top 10 Phoenix goals of all time (thread needed)  But performance wise the club did well with Turner and Trani as assistants.

As in Aussie Rado and Trani are key components at their clubs.

If the Victory wouldn't re-sign him for effectively free with the loyalty allowances, not sure why anyone would use actual cap on him tbh.

Would still have him off the bench ahead of Powell tbh. Although not used a lot this year end is still an x factor player who looks dangerous and makes things happen

Archie has proven quality, but arguably Powell is still developing as a player. We picked him up at, what, 24 years of age? He did not exactly have excellent role models to play next to in order to reach his full potential over the last season. I would give Powell another year for sure and you may find that with better supply he could become a reliable squad striker, despite not (normally) being a game winner (WSW game excepted).

if you can pick up the leagues all time leading scorer to sit on your bench for cheap then go for it. Don't see how that would be a massive step backward.

Only played in 14 games this season, for 345 minutes. Best case would be a bench role, trying to provide some impact but he hasn't achieved that at all this season.

depends what wage he is demanding for mine. If he is cheap, I'd pick him up.

You'd usually think he'd be able to get a better wage elsewhere though. But maybe not at 37.

WELLINGTON

Needs: Defensive reinforcements and an attacker to step up.

Ideal player: James Donachie

Gettable: Curtis Good

Already signed: Kosta Barbarouses, Gui Finkler (Victory)

Cover after Ben Sigmund’s retirement and Manny Muscat’s exit, while a fit Roy Krishna should benefit from the service of the arrivals from Victory.

In their season wrap for us, the A-League website has said that as well as losing Siggie and Manny, we're also cutting Danaskos and Appiah. Nothing about Lia, Rufer, Gulley etc.
