“To be honest the reason I have decided to wait so long is because of how close we are to making the six and I don’t want to take my focus away from that, and I know Stevie (Taylor) is the same,” he said.
“It’s something that is in the forefront of your mind but the most important thing at the moment is to win games and to make the top six. That’s my only focus at the moment and I’ll look after that after this weekend, and hopefully it means we are in the six and we’ll go from there.”
Devlin also made it clear that he is happy at the Phoenix, where he has been a regular starter in central midfield, and described his move from Sydney FC two years ago as the “best thing I’ve ever done”.
“I love living in Wellington, I love the fans, I love everyone to do with the club, and it’s been so good for me being in Wellington.
“I still remember my first phone call with [operations manager] Shaun Gill. I was just down at the park and obviously I’d spoken to Uffie, and Gilly called me and I was on a flight the next day.
“It was such a whirlwind at the time but to this day I’m so grateful, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
