I thin saying stuff like 'better than Davila' is only setting us up to fail. Firstly, Uli was one of the top 3 creative players ever to don the shirt (and likely in a top 10-15 for the league). Secondly, players can't be measured on scales. The first few games Uli played, I thought he was a dud. Same for Hemed, or Hoops (we knew he was unfit).
Point being, many factors play into how good a player can be for a team. The system used by the team, fitness, friendships off and on the park etc. That's why a great player is one who can be consistently at his or her level for years. I hope all this talk of signing the next best thing doesn't end up jinxing us to be honest
To be fair, Uli was talked about as having the potential to be one of the best foreigners to ever play in the A-League when his signed was announced. A bold statement that wasn't far off. Uffy has a system, and it works, he consistently recruits the best players for the system rather than the other way around. The same mentality is seen at Sydney which is why they've had consistent success unlike MVC who have been bringing in players without a real plan on how they will actually play together. The players that the Bulls are bringing in show a similar pattern to MVC so I wouldn't be surprised if Uli struggles a bit there.

Wonder if the Nix tabled an offer for him. The circumstances around him leaving were a little strange, IIRC there were some reports that he was contracted for another year, others that said he wasn't, he repeatedly said in the press that he wanted to stay, so the team must have either asked him to go because of budget problems or didn't offer him an extension.

I guess it was a pretty turbulent time.

If Devlin stays it won't be so bad but I'm sure Uffie is already working on a back up plan. Alen Stajcic has just left the Marniers so atleast we managed to keep Uffie as he's probably our biggest signing for next season

Yeah even if Devlin goes (which seems likely now with those persistent rumours), Talay will have a plan. Still has 2 visa spots up his sleeve, and is a few Aussie midfielders now off contract. In Uffie we trust.

I back the recruitment team to replace Devlin (and Steinmann). Devlin was a guy who I doubt any of us really knew much about when he came here, just a handful of Sydney appearances, now look at him, and Steinmann had only 3 2.Bundesliga games for Hamburg in 18/19, before joining a relegation team in Denmark, and still not being a nailed-on starter there. Look at Dávila’s record in India etc. If they can find these guys then they can do it again.

And just because it’s fun to throw names out of a hat, why not Felix Kroos. He’s 30 and just been relegated from the 2.Bundesliga with Braunschweig, and is off contract. 156 games in that tier, 80 in the top, but probably on the downhill curve of his career. Far bigger pedigree than Steinmann, and, who knows, maybe he could give a shout to his brother to come down one day as well.

From my friends in German healthcare, the vaccination rate against Covid-19 is diabolically slow and many suspect there will be a totally expected new wave of infections in a few months simply because nobody wants more restrictions anymore.
You could expect that at least some reasonable quality players may want to have a season away from that.

Devlin was a funny one. Sydney fans raved about him in the NYL, so I thought he was a good pick up at the time. But his first few appearances as the wide #10 in the A-League & Handy Prem were absolute garbage. Maybe he played #6 in the Sydney NYL team or maybe it was by chance Uffie stumbled onto the fact he is a terrier in the middle of the park. I will miss his energy if he does take up another teams offer.

Bit pissed off that we are a finishing school for other clubs. But I’ll be stoked if Taylor can find a place for Hemed in his pocket...or if Payne can! Lewis or new guy to mark Uli.
I’m not quite sure how we’ll play with Hooper. Long balls there from Rufer, McCowatt, Piscopo and deep crosses from Payne. Fairly different to our recent style.
Wondering where Devere is now too- probably 3rd choice even with full fitness. Can’t be looking good for TAHW either. Looked imperious in Uffie’s first season, but hasn’t made the jump.
Want to see some of Clayton Lewis’ shooting on target next year. If you’re on the set pieces give it a chance, man!
Speculation on the Uli replacement please.
Maybe we are trying to Glen McGrath the club chat- talk big and back it up. Damn I hope so! Top 4 aspirations and consistent results out of the box would be good. Keep the run going.

Well he's definitely not staying then. Loved watching him play across the second half of the season, but obviously thats a huge wage and with Hooper I'd rather the money was spent on a class international holding midfielder and the uli replacement

"Israeli side Hapoel Beer Sheva have opened talks with off-contract Wellington striker Tomer Hemed. Hapoel's first offer for two seasons was rejected by Hemed, who expects to earn about 450,000 euros per season."

Man is asking for a lot of money. No way we are gonna be keeping him. Given the fact that the Nix want to heavily invest in the squad as a whole for next season, unlikely they will be wanting to pay one player NZD$750,000+.  We can wave Hemed goodbye.

How old is Tony Kroos? He'd be better ;)

No idea but 450k Euro is $764k NZD atm. If we are paying Hemed close to that atm, that means Davila would have taken less money to go to Macarthur ($2m AUD over 3 years) cuz he was offered our biggest contract ever.

Could have also been we offered Davilla a lot but only a one or two year deal and at his age he decided to go for the three.

I doubt we're paying Hemed anywhere near that. He'd gone through a lean spell when we hired him which might have lowered his price, but he's hit form again which means he's asking for more, and of course just because he's asking for it doesn't mean anyone would pay him that.

Hemed came to the Nix not having scored a goal for nearly 18 months (April 2019), and some questions about his fitness. He obviously hadn't picked up a suitable deal in Euro summer window 2020, so imagine his wage demands would have been much less. Not forgetting the whole uncertainty around football with Covid last year, sans crowd revenue etc etc

Different picture now approaching 2nd half of 2021, and having scored 11 goals from 16 starts in the A League.

As long as stays injury free and gets good service, Hooper should score plenty like he did 2019/20. Took awhile for Hemed & Fenton to gel. With a full pre season, hopefully Nix are better ready to go once the new season starts. Encouraging rumours on a Davila replacement, and then where do you go with the 5th visa spot.

Holding mid, or another striker? If Hooper was out say for 6 weeks with a hammy twinge, the attack could look a bit powder puff, as it was at the end of the 2019/20 season when restarted with that hub in NSW. Though Waine has come on since then. But want better squaddies than Ngoy & Muratovic for the new season. Guys who can actually come on and be a goal threat.

Alot of credit has to go to Uffie, players seem to be doing well under him and going on to bigger contracts then when they arrived.
If Hemed is to leave would be happier if it wasn't another A league club he went to. Those teams can find there own imports.

Yeah about how I feel, too. It stings when imports go to other clubs as it's so hard to find good ones.

It's nice to have a system in place and to have a coach who actually recruits players specifically for that system, though. Helps a lot when integrating new ones. Most of the team already know their roles and the expectations set.

Also good point re: Ngoy/Muratovic. I thought Muratovic didn't look terrible, but Ngoy barely looked like a footballer and was infuriating every time he got minutes. I've never seen a player much such terrible runs.

If we had a couple of better backups there it would make life a lot easier. Shark, even Watto would do better than Ngoy..

Looks like the Mariners at least got lucky and didn't pick up Rudes. They better keep an eye on their usb's at 10 & Paramount. Quite surprised by this though, thought he had burned his bridges there but is a new network I guess.

I guess after Bozza and Co turned all warm and fuzzy on us, the commentary team will need someone new to balance things out.
Bozza: "Wellington are doing so well under Talay"
Rudan: "Yeah, well... they're OK... you should have seen them under the previous guy..."

I was just thinking that. I mean, why else? Surely he'll get paid well... But not stupid money like Davila and we likely would have matched his wages.. So why else other than being in aussie? His gf is from over there if I'm not mistaken so that could maybe be a factor along with being closer to family?

In any case, this is still speculation and I'm keeping my fingers crossed he stays.

"Being in Aussie" is surely a good enough reason for any Aussie to leave the Nix.

For those unfamiliar, the NL forums are a wretched hide of anonymous scum and villainy which makes the InsideSports forums look level-headed and responsible. Saying that, this is a good call from there re: TAWH: "surprised ACFC haven't found a brown envelope for him". Bay Olympic are solidly mid-table so maybe he has mates there.

Solidly mid-table technically yes, but they’re 2 points off third and one off the top four

McGarry is very good at attacking but his defense needs work. Ideally he is a LWB but as we don't play them, if he stays Uffie might have to look at him as a wide #10 option off the bench whilst working on his defense.
