Just add the extra onto residents rates,

The actual budget is 44-48 million with 25 million of that from the council.

Build a rail spur there from the Petone station and we'll talk. Anyone who lives in the area can tell me how many good pubs are nearby?

I really think this is the equivalent of the best scene in Blazing Saddles. Welnix are pointing a gun at their own heads and yelling: "Give us a better deal or the Phoenix gets it!", then saying in a different voice: "He's not bluffing, man! Do what he says!!!"

Jackson St which is the main st in Petone has plenty of pubs, resturants, cafe's, etc. Jackson St has a mixture of shit things, awesome things, and really bizarre things which kind of all add up to being quite a cool place. What people call Character. I live in Wellington but end up spending allot of time out that way, its where all the DIY stores are.

That overall cost is getting closer to reality, but still leaves about a 50% hole in the cost IF Hutt City came to the party.

To me I still think its a means of negotiating a better deal with Westpac Stadium, be it costs or "experiences", at a cost of probably less than $30k for some pretty pictures.

Dont get me wrong, I love the idea of what they are proposing and it would be a 2 minute train trip for me, but there are so many hurdles and potential downsides in making this happen just make me very doubtful that it will ever be built.

Fact2.....the owners say they won't keep forking out to cover for losses

If the club can find an alternative venue whereby match day revenue covers operating costs means the  the club will still be around in 30+ years time and not have to rely on being propped up by rich owners. Finding more financial viable boutique venues is a debate that has been happening in the A-League for quite a while.

I suggest every one wait to see the whole proposal before trashing it.

As a fan I think its a great idea. I am happy to travel to Petone if it means I get to sit in a proper rectangular football stadium. Believe me the difference in match day experiance will be 1000x better than Westpac......... Bring it on!!!!!

Purely from a fans perspective why would you not be anything but be excited by a purpose built 12,000 seat boutique football stadium?

Who pays for it and the whole building and consent process is not my problem...its not my money. I support it 100%. The extra travel effort to get to Petone is not an issue for me. Transrail puts on extra trains to help get 10,000 people to the Martinborough wine fest.....a bus and train transport plan would be quite simple to PetRec.

I respectfully disagree RR.

Vacant land and easy parking does not (solely) a good location make... and there's bugger all else going for it.

Me too. Miles from train links, miles from any decent pubs and one of the worst places to be in Wellington with either a Southerly or Northerly blowing.

Mate what are you talking about?

It's about as close to Ava Station as Westpac Stadium is to Wellington Stadium.

There aren't a lot of good pubs on the concourse, but there are a handful on Jackson Street with more opening all the time.

This is the best idea the Phoenix have had in years.

It may not be "your" money but it is someones money. It comes from somewhere, in this case likely to be the taxpayers of Hutt City.  Given the pushback against the constant rate rises over recent years, there will be resistance against raising rates for what is a non core council activity.

Transport is the least of the difficulties the proposal faces.

2. There is no tagging visible on the stadium.

3. In relation 1 above and photo 1 - "Blue sky? You're having a laugh"

So thankfully the Newlands project still has legs.

I'm living in Newlands and personally I'm not bothered. Just an extra (free?) 10minute train ride each way. The benefits of watching football at a football ground will easily make up for that

if fans are fans then they'll find a way to get there. Also looking at the concept photos, there doesn't appear to be any carpark area, whats the deal with that issue?

Also, these letters will be full of lurid predictions of fans after Phoenix/Hurricanes/Lions/(NRL franchise) victories spilling drunkenly out of the ground, spewing in innocent Petoneites' letterboxes, urinating across their patios and sexually harrassing their household pets. (I'm just old enough to remember the equivalent in Berhampore in the Athletic Park days.)

Re parking, the council chaps at the press conference said that would all be dealt with through the consent process. Said they had considered it though and it sounded like they were untroubled.

We should probably start a letter writing campaign in favour.

Looks decent enough to me, nothing flash but functional and would be a better match day experience than the Westpac.

Don't know the area very well so can't comment on the location, I'd still go when i could, i'd just hope tranzmetro would come to the party and put on a couple of special trains that go through without the need to change from the other lines, don't see why that can't be achievable. Would like to see a couple of trains from Porirua/Kapiti depending on whether you wanted to get there a couple of hours before for a beer or 2 or get there half hour before kickoff just to watch the game.., Would be a bit of a head scratcher figuring out what to do on the way back though, guess you'd have to wait or swap in town.

This

Those stadium photos are sooooo sexy I have just had to change my underpants.

As for Petone local bars, cafes etc I think you will find that the whole match day experiance will be totally different than what we have seen in the past. Gareth mentioned family areas and catering etc. This will be more like you see in Europe. The fans go to the stadium hours before the match and do their prematch drinking at the venue. There will be bars and a wide range of food options at the stadium. The club gets a big cut of the beverage and food spend which helps to defer match day costs. In many countries the earnings from food and beverage are a vital part of clubs revenues.

I can remember last year going to see PSG play Montpellier. I arrived at the stadium 2 hours before kickoff.... you could smell the barbeque from 500 metres away. The area in front of the stadium was like a wine festival. You could get a huge range of food...BBQ steak sammies, chorizo sausages, chips, ethnic foods etc. There were beer and wine stands everywhere and live bands. It was a great party and the atmosphere was amazing. The whole thing was run by the club and they took the profit. If they do that sort of thing at the new stadium then we are in for a new experiance.

The reality is that in NZ our sports match day experiance has hardly moved on from what you got in the old days at Athletic park.....shit food, shit beer and shit service. This new stadium could move us into a new era.

Dear Mr Hutt (can I call you Jabba?)

I think that the new stadium is a mint idea.  In fact I'd go so far as to say it's f*cking ace.

I hope you build it soon and include lots of shiny bits in it.

If you need a hand with it I have a good mate who could help out (he has a ute and a cordless power drill and he is pretty handy).

Cheers

I was completely against the location first of all but will admit it is growing on me. It is only a 10 minute drive away from the current stadium. And the lure of an actual football stadium is appealing.

Why would they put on buses when you could get there with 2 trains?

Seeing as the change is quite possibly walking across a platform at the station then I suspect it's unlikely.  There is no simple way of switching until you get into the Wellington yards anyway so they may as ell just run an evry 10 minute service for a couple of hours before on matchday.

Jackson Street is a little similar to what Caxton Street was [is] near to Suncorp in Brisbane. On this food etc issue, surely this is a clue that Gareth's consortium will be stumping up the readies to build this stadium as otherwise they wouldn't eb able to achieve having all of this stuff. If it was owned by someone else, then the owners would be wanting to make money from as little outlay as possible and would be wanting a spotless Catering type arrangement wouldn't they? Big venues and small venues alike seem to ahve these kinds of arrangements. Here in HB, for example, the speedway have all of their main catering done by Gala Catering [hotdog trucks etc] with a small smattering of coffee and ice cream caravans. I don't know, but I think they might be owned by Gala too. Wouldn't surprise me if they had a special deal to do the catering. I think the big venues like Westpac and Eden Park have reasonably big banquet facilities for corporate events associated with and without games, you'd still want somethign liek that for sponsors etc at a smaller venue too. Just wondering how all that would work?

Of course there will also be a free creche providing hot meals, bed time stories and cots and basinettes with fluffy duverts. Free buses will run the following day to get children to school. This will all be free as part of the season ticket/game day match ticket to enhance the free bus/train travel to the stadium to entice those thousands of fans that live in downtown Welligton city, who would otherwise stay away.
