Hmmm.  "Petone Arena"

Not sure I'd like that as a name. Not so intimidating.

Naming ideas:

Bogan Bowl

The Valley ('y'all come back you hear?")

Greater Wellington Phoenix FC Stadium and other locally based sports teams also

The Ring of Passive Agressiveness

Surely it has to be "Nocats Park"

It's a great idea! It had be done, it is just the right investment to go to the next step. It's fantastic that Welnix and Petone have the balls to do it.

I want my own seat with my name on it!

All joking aside, sounds very positive. I like the idea.

I can remember last year going to see PSG play Montpellier. I arrived at the stadium 2 hours before kickoff.... you could smell the barbeque from 500 metres away. The area in front of the stadium was like a wine festival. You could get a huge range of food...BBQ steak sammies, chorizo sausages, chips, ethnic foods etc. There were beer and wine stands everywhere and live bands. It was a great party and the atmosphere was amazing. The whole thing was run by the club and they took the profit. If they do that sort of thing at the new stadium then we are in for a new experiance.

The reality is that in NZ our sports match day experiance has hardly moved on from what you got in the old days at Athletic park.....shit food, shit beer and shit service. This new stadium could move us into a new era.

Actually I think this is all just a cunning plan by Welnix to draw attention away from our team getting dicked 5-0. We are all now salivating over pretty stadium pictures instead of angsting over the loss.

If Welnix have $25 million spare cash wouldn't it be better to hire Christiano Ronaldo for the playoffs  LOL

I can remember going to the Coface Arena to see Mainz play Augsburg a couple of years ago - train from Frankfurt to Mainz, bus from Mainz station to the ground which is in the middle of nowhere (similarities to Petone) - about a 1km walk through greenfields to the ground, past the guys selling knockoff scarves including one with the simple message "F%#@ You Kaiserslautern."

The ground had a club shop, bouncy castles, skills trials for kids, umpah bands playing and stalls selling all sorts of wursts.  Interestingly you couldn't use cash in the stadium; all the vendors took ground debit cards that you loaded up with money - it seemed to speed up buying food and beer (and I'm talking nice 500ml plastic cups of beer).

Also had a nice mesh fence area for the away coaches to park, with barbed wire concourse to separate the away fans  getting into the ground.  Not sure the last is needed for the three Newcastle fans who make the trip across the Tassie

Someone please think of the children.

Of course there will also be a free creche providing hot meals, bed time stories and cots and basinettes with fluffy duverts. Free buses will run the following day to get children to school. This will all be free as part of the season ticket/game day match ticket to enhance the free bus/train travel to the stadium to entice those thousands of fans that live in downtown Welligton city, who would otherwise stay away.

That's all good. But what about the children?

Children will be provided

Easter road a few months ago.

Not saying its a bad thing, people just get preloaded from the near by pubs and without being weighed down with beer and food they have more room to shake fists and yell obscenities.

Ah, Easter Road...............  :-)

To be honest I never really bother with food at the game, but there wasn't a bad selection of fast food type stuff at Firhill the last time I was there.

If the Nix and Hutt CC are going to invest in this facility then both parties will want long term commitments; the HCC that the Nix will play there and the Nix that they will have a franchise. I think discussions are already underway between the FFA and clubs about 10 to 15 year licences.

A huge positive to be taken from this stadium possibility is the Nix's owners clear long term commitment and the strong desire to continue to grow and develop football.

A possible benefit, if the stadium does go ahead, may be facilitation of the expansion of the NRL in to Wellington - ideal stadium available at a reasonable cost. Not really my sport but it doesn't compete with the football market and may offer economies of scale in stadium cost sharing and training facilities.

It would be foolish for Team Wellington not to play there.

Just the bump of a shiny new stadium would see them get a good crowd hike.

Would be nice if the price was right. Doubt you would do it for $10.00 or free with a Nix memebership.

And I doubt me BBQ would pass the muster.

Media are saying TW could/would play there and also the Hurricanes as there is a link...... Welnix are co owners of the Canes. No F**ken eggball in our shiny new football stadium thanks...LOL

Actually getting rugby on board would give this extra legs. There are plenty of people who would suddenly support this if it was a rugby stadium as well.....makes logistical sense. Certainly the Lions would prob  use it.

Hurricanes average attendence last season was 11k, Lions 6k.

They are struggling with stadium costs as well - and they'd go up further if Nix bale - so you would think they'd leap at the chance of using OUR stadium.

At the very least, with some competition for the 5-15k crowd you might expect the Caketin to bring down their rental prices.

I do think it would be a real shame to move base from central Wellington.

As long as they stay in Wellington, I will follow. Possible all linked with talk about new NRL team in Wellington. Can see Nix, NRL and Rugby using Stadium. Income stream all year round.

Don't mind if prices stay the same, but could set up own ticketing firm and drop that $5 surcharge for tickets, would be happy with $2 or just add it into the cost

Right, so it's all agreed then?

I'll just pop up to Newlands tommorrow and get the digger loaded onto the truck and then over to Hutt Park.

Might have to do it mid morning when there isn't too much traffic.

Maybe the YF exec can organise a few weekend working bees to get it going?  This weekend should be god as the team are playing away so should be plenty of helpers.

Ha, and I opened a topic a few months ago discussing a potential rectangular purpose built football stadium and got laughed at.

Well, if this goes ahead it's the best thing for Football in NZ since the Nix were founded in 07.

A 12k stadium will make for a much better athmsophere, less empty seats and hopefully we can bring drums flags and all that sort of stuff to show NZ what athmosphere at a sports game really means!

Would be awesome if they named one of the stands "Phoenix Stand", or "Yellow Fever Stand."
And the clubs Logo shining at the entrance way!

I'm dreaming...

So good thngs about the proposed stadium:

  • Rectangular and sized appropriately
  • Lower cost - more viable
  • Could cater for several sports codes/competitions
  • No sevens (clean seats!)
  • No Bon Jovi
  • Scope for a Blew2 BBQ

Bad things about the stadium:
  • Transport
  • Whose going to pay?

The no Bon Jovi would do it for me.
