You know what? Its not about the fan experience or whether or not it is a rectangular stadium, it all comes down to the amount of money it costs to play at westpac. Todays papers quotes welnix as saying they lose money at present playing at westpac, so something needs to give to reduce that whether it be a better deal or more crowds. Westpac will not feel threatened enough to reduce hirage unless there is a real and iminent threat to the Nix leaving. At present wellnix take their show on the road, that affects westpacs bottom line. I'd wager that if westpac dont budge then you'll see a new sports complex built by a consortium including wellnix and/or some of its principals. It wont just be ground either, it will include accommodation, shopping, events centre, sports science, gym, pool etc. The Nix would not be the only users, rugby and league and other football would use it too. Westpac would become a white elephant sporting wise

Agreed, it's a threat to try and give some leverage to negotiate.

I dunno man,Gareth Morgan is someone that likes to get things done. His main complaint is how far you are from the pitch and Westpac stadium aint going to change that anytime soon. The WRFU could get behind it as well so you have Lions matches at the new stadium as well.
He also like suggesting things that he is fully aware of  will probably never happen.

Cant really see this getting to far along unless the FFA grant a us a much longer licence.

If they can build a modern 15000 seater stadium for 25 to 30 million, I will wear a pink tutu to the first match. #Tellhimhesdreaming

Doubt rugby would get to involved unless it was stadium of the size of the current one. Also cant see the regions councils being to keen on rate payers being to involved in funding it.

The lions would be dead keen id say, they have similar issues as we do.
But yeah I don't see the council funding any of it. "A stadium? Don't we already have one of those?"

might not require council funding if it is driven by the likes of morgan. Most sports facilities are instigated by councils or organisations with no money and council funding is essential. Can't see why rugby wouldn't be involved. They must lose money playing there too. Allblacks etc still play at westpac and ditto to the lions if they are having a good run. Exactky same as the warriors and breakers, move to the big stadia when they have the big crowds.

you're right, ratepayers shouldn't have to fork out when they already own one. It will all turn on favourable terms at westpac. Remember, if westpac loses money it comes out of the rates, its a tough one. I think wellington council needs to bite thebullet and spend some dosh on reconfigeration and find ways to reduce game day costs

Shame we can't lend you guys Waikato stadium, best venue in the country. We get good crowds here for sports though, the one thing our council has done right. Think we had 12k for a preseason nix game here.

At present the stadium is close to pubs ( trax , bencher , old bailey) , Courtney Place , McDonalds ETC  and above all its easy to get to. I have mates that catch the train from up the coast and they find it fairly easy to get to the game and I come from Wainuiomata and have to catch a bus and a train and its not a big hassle to be honest even on Sundays when public transport is reduced.

Now here's a fan who went out of his way and caught 2 forms of public transport. How did you ever survive that journey of danger and peril.
Lol. Wainui is probably the only place in wellington region where anyone needs to do this to get to the stadium. Move it to Petone or Newtown, 75% of the wellington region now needs to do this. And if it's Newtown, you'll be needing bus/train/bus and back, from Wainui.

Maybe we could have a working bee and turn all that wood into a nice new rectangular stadium!!! A weekend, something to char some meat on, a chilly bin full of beer and we have our very own stadium!

Then you really are WUM-muppet.
The "cake-tin" has been packed out in the past and the RoF has done well when we reached the finals and also those AW matches.
Are you suggesting that large flat screens in people's homes are going to stop them going to live sport because they can't sit in the front row of a small rectangle stadium to hear Carlos slag off at Lia for not running into space?

Totally support the idea, take a look at Dean Court in Bournemouth, completely rebuilt 10 years ago for 6.5 million quid. If it's like this I will be down from Palmy for every game!

You make a good point J82. But at the same time, atmosphere is probably the one point of difference of watching sport live at the ground vs watching it on TV.  a smaller stadium would produce a better atmosphere, which would get more people interested in coming to games.
