Public opinion is such bs when that opinion is a result of the spread of misinformation and apathy toward a sport.

It should be about the facts, whether its good for a region, not the opinion of a vocal minority.

Saying "it would be a sad day if proposals were never put up for discussion because they generate strong views" at the same time as you reject an idea because it generated strong views is also bs.

I agree but did Morgan want this or use this as a bluff.....? When you step back and realise that this was a bluff (and lets not kid ourselves that it was anything other) then the 'publics opinion' on this is irrelevant because there was never any intention for it to happen. Its like saying someone saying 'Hey lets build a beach house on the sun. What do you think?' The logical conclusion is that the thoughts are irrelevant because there is never an intention for it to happen.

Yes and no. I think if the council put it into the plan, the nix would've gone ahead with it. One of those "if it happens it happens" kind of deals. I also don't see how a proposal like this being rejected strengthens our position with the stadium in any way. If anything it shows the stadium we don't have any other options.

Your last line is the key point. Shane Harmon now knows the one truth - he has no need to negotiate. He knows this cause if Welnix were serious, they would have ridden this horse hard to the finish line and that, they certainly did not do. They pulled the pin on this grenade and then walked away knowing they were not going to follow through on it.

As I noted on twitter last night, the last tweets from Gareth about the Phoenix were on Feb 18th, 3 tweets about the Stadium proposal, since then not a single sound.

Nothing even vaguely Phoenix related even. The last time I remember him being vocal about the Phoenix was when he was calling the fans pathetic.

Sums up welnix at the moment for me.

In some respects this really shows where they are at. They are well and truly asleep at the wheel (and I label this at Welnix, not the Phoenix) By the same token, its nice for once that Gareth has his mouth firmly shut and not talking his usual bollocks.

This will all be a distant memory when Gorrin and McGlinchey are beating up the rest of the A League for fun in front of crowds of 12,000 next season.

And yes, I am pinning all my hopes on a 20 yr old we've never seen play and a dude we haven't even signed yet.

Who wants to have to go to the Hutt anyway? Caketin isn't perfect but still a far better option.

I think it is a bad idea.  Building it within the four avenues near the CBD will encroach on the open spaces.

They should be putting it at Hagley oval.

It's a great idea, but not there. How about Hutt Park?

Just found this on "Stuff" with Gareths moosh there. WTF, He makes one statement  and the article is about him. Obviously no one else went in to bat. NOT!

The Petone Arena plan is dead after Hutt City councillors voted unanimously to drop the proposal this afternoon.

Public feedback had been overwhelmingly negative on the idea, which would have seen a 12,000-seat stadium for the Wellington Phoenix football club built over half of the Petone Recreation Ground.

Loss of green space, loss of playing fields for local sports clubs, and lack of parking were the most common complaints.

Public support was one of the key conditions to move forward with the idea, and that was obviously lacking, Lower Hutt mayor Ray Wallace said. The council received hundreds of annual plan submissions opposed to the arena, and hundreds also attended public meetings to discuss the concept.

Phoenix co-owner Gareth Morgan had proposed the arena as an alternative base to Westpac Stadium for the club. The smaller stadium would foster a better game-day atmosphere than the Cake Tin could offer, Morgan told councillors in April.

The Welnix collective would have paid $19 million to $23m for the arena, while ratepayers would have needed to pay $25m.

Seems the cost of the new roof could be about the same as the planned Petone Stadium.

Maybe if Gareth paid for the roof, he could get the naming rights: 'Westpac Phoenix Arena' anyone?

Thought they were saying the sixty to a hundred million dollar mark knowing how these things always go over budget its going to be at least double the cost of the Petone Arena.

What I don't understand is if they considered putting a roof on it when they built it why did they not pay the extra money strengthening it so that the extensions could happen in the future? Short sighted during construction.

C'mon Ryan, you should know that's the kiwi way, take the cheap option, corner cut etc.

Everything we do is half arsed and we end up spending twice as much later to fix it... govt. buildings, railways, motorways, North Harbour Stadium, Auckland Waterfront Stadium er Eden Park, leaky homes...  The list goes on.

Agree.

If Nimbys in Hutt Valley do not want us, they can GGF.

Newlands anyone?

After we go and did a big hole in the middle of Petone Rec and poison all the trees, thereby actually wrecking their rec

I'm still keen on demolishing St Pat's town and building one there next to the indoor arena.

Would fit in well with Basin flyover and Celia's light rail to the airport.

St Pats could move to the old Erskine grounds...
