Have I told you, lately (Stevo), that I love you?
Have I told you, lately, that I care?

Mmm. They haven't published any I've sent in lately. And to be honest, I can't be arsed putting up with some of the stupid on there.

Nice work from Kevin Airs the online editor...a top bloke by the way.

* This blog was originally submitted two weeks ago but, erm, got lost in a certain online editor's inbox. Apologies. I have since sacked myself, branded the act unfair and then reinstated myself on a vastly inflated salary.

Yeah, he helped me out with a problem last night as well.

Good man (even if he wouldn't let me be an anonymous Phoenix blogger).

How's my driving? - Whine here

Well what I was trying to say is that players all over the league lack mental strength, and it is our lack of strength that is leading players to ignore Ricki and sit back instead of going for another goal.

Interesting. What I have noticed over the years is that sports people well known for mental strength have it from an early age, not something they get taught. It's human nature to resort to type under stress, hence our kick the sh*t out of the ball approach the longer the 2nd half went on on Saturday night and I agree a lot more mental strength was needed to overcome this but when you have got players in the side who have built a career on this style of play makes it very difficult to contain. Discipline is easier to coach, followed closely by crisis management

It's actually the lack of mental strength in leading players that caused the problems on Saturday night. When guys like Brown, Sigmund, Lochead, Lia etc started lumping the ball as soon as they had won it (one of them being the team captain) there was no leadership to reign it in. Durante or Brown (and this is why he should not be captain) needed to step in and pull the team into line - "DON'T KICK IT AWAY DICKHEAD, CAN'T YOU SEE WE NEED TO KEEP THE f**kING BALL" or some such. This is the approach that makes teams successful, real leadership. Ricki is a nice guy, no doubt Tim Brown is a nice guy, but they need to LEAD, regardless of how tired players were ffs.

I know for a fact that a psychologist has been consulted by Phoenix, but understand it was prior to season 2 and I'm unsure of the extent of the consultation or whether it was/is ongoing.

That sounds plausible - does that mean that our squad is inherently sans vertebrae and if so we will always cave in when the going gets tough?

Going on recent history that looks right. Although cave in is not always true, sometimes they do manage to hang in there. The problem is they don't do it by playing football. I see the biggest problem not as a lack of mental toughness but a lack of clear leadership, on and off the park. The team mimics Ricki, nice guys everywhere but no one making the hard calls. When was the last time a player missed selection on form for the Phoenix? You can't tell me there have been no players who should have been dropped so far this season. And if guys are still getting games when they are out of form why is that? Lack of quality back up? or live in the hope that things will come right, keep doing the same old same old and see what happens? Either way decisions are not being made. The players then reflect this on the pitch. Durante as captain needs to demand more from his team mates. He has the ability and the stature amongst them to carry it off, and Ricki needs to stand up and make the call if players are out of form. The only other player in that team at the moment playing properly is Ifill. Same approach can be said for the All Whites. It's about winning, not being nice. No decision is worse than a bad decision every time. Ronaldoknow2009-10-20 15:07:13
