A-league heat in OZ

I have a question, obviously australia is warmer than new zealand and we have seen in the past when its 15 degrees here in october its 30 degrees over there, so heres my serious question.

I think we have the capabilities to compete at the top, no questions asked, however my biggest concern is how are we going to get round combating the heat problem, when our players go from cold to roasting hot every second week? heat makes you tired, when its hot next time and you have been in the sun for a while (even 20mins) because of the heat your body gets a bit tired, so i was wondering how are the phoenix gonna combat this for next season, as i think that has played a part in our results as well.

I personally would do this:

if we are playing 2 away games back to back (ie. friday then the following sat) then i think our team should stay in australia but move to the next city and train in oz then come home??? i think that would help us aclimatize.

What are your thoughts?

I couldn't agree more. I think the heat factor is a huge part of it, being the only kiwi team I don't think it adversley effects the aussies as much as we are. I guess the touring side of things is hard work to, trying to manage training schedules etc, but I do think that hanging around for 2 or even 3 weeks is necessary.

Does anyone have information regarding the temperatures at the games to compare? Have the trainers commented on this at all before?

i think heat is certainly an issue, you only have to look at how the warriors wilted in the playoffs in the heat of townsville.
if the league expands to townsville then it becomes even bigger issue. ricki tested different strategies regards travel this season and hopefully will have decided on the best way to combat the heat problems

"Up front we played like world beaters - at the back it was more like panel beaters."

i dont think its an excuse but its a factor faced by the all the nz teams that play in oz comps and one of the reasons why in 10 years when we have won 9 premierships that it will be all that much sweeter

well said Paul Jewell.

heat or not they are professionals and should be able to get on with the job no matter the weather.

No, it's a non-issue. Professional footballers who are super-fit and train all the time, and have fitness and medical staff monitor their every move and hand-feed them liquids continuously, nothing to complain about. Some of the cities, eg Melbourne, Adelaide, are not necessarily any warmer than Wellington much of the time (current heatwave excepted), so their players are no different.

Don't forget too, early in the season the Phoenix were credited with being one of the fitter tams in the league, usually outlasting their opponents late in the game.

And we certainly can't use it as an excuse for our current table position.

I prefer the panel beater comment too!

wed went to a training session in Melb the day before the game - and was rediculously hot - felt sorry for the players (apart from Elrich)

Why did you not feel sorry for Elrich? Were his blue boots (specially made for crossing the ball) the only ones not melting in the heat?

Actually Feverish, what you're saying is that by training in 40 degrees plus the day before the match, they WERE acclimatised in fact.

If heat is such a factor, how come we played better in the second half on Friday night than in the first??

Bizarre day that: 40 degrees by lunchtime then cooled off to about 20-odd by kickoff. It was funny seeing the visiting YF boys all perfectly comfortable in t-shirts while the 'local' Nix fans were shivering from the cold!

Well, here is one tip : don't train when it's bloody 40+ degrees! I'm pretty sure Melb didn't.

So LG, the grand scheme in your view is to sack the whole defensive line and start from scratch ?

Lochhead, so our starting point for V2 is 1 left back ?

How's my driving? - Whine here
