The A-League highlights are on again tonight, Monday 17th Aug, SS1 at 10pm (22.00).
Half an hour later than last week.

(Here's Sky's Electronic Programme Guide -- https://www.skytv.co.nz/Default.aspx?tabid=116 )

I see the highlights package does get a couple of spins tomorrow, along with a full replay of the Nix/Glory game.

PLUS a delayed playing of the GCU game at the weekend. The one with Smeltz and co.

Can see why Sky didn't play it live. 5-1? What a whitewash. Not worth watching.

Live football can never beat dead(ly) golf reruns.

Will have a goosey tonight and try see the Nix replay tomorrow, I have a feeling the golf argument abour re runs and highlights might not go so well this week... me thinks people might watch some unknown chap catch Tiger on the back 9 and wear him down

Who's counting? Five goals? Four? The game was still a whitewash. Not a sporting spectacle suitable for tender eyes.

I reckon Sky knew the score in advance and buried the game to prevent viewer embarrassment.
No other reason I can think of.

After all, Sky understands the beautiful game.

Yeah, right.

Complain to Sky every single week about this - the coverage is a disgrace.

They put some rugby Methven versus Nowhere on last week, I couldn't flippin believe it.

I thought it was odd that they didn't use Andrew and Fred's commentary when they showed the Phoenix v Perth highlights.  All of the other games had the game commentators, but for the Phoenix game they had a voiceover narration.

anyone thought it strange how both Dewey and Fred commented on the Phoenix's continued defensive frailties when Ferrante f'd up? A lot would disagree with me - but when a midfielder gets the ball and is dispossed so easily and exposes the goal then I wouldn't call it a defending error. We had the ball and had it turned over - from there the defense could do bugger all

Indeed. I noticed that, I thought it very poor ....
... unless there is some contractual sh*t-fight going on with Sky over rights for use of commentators or some such. Can't imagine Sky behaving like that though.

Edit: comment on LF1's post.

The highlights package is pitched at Australian viewers, so maybe they will try and avoid Kiwi voices where possible.

Did the Aussies use Andrew and Fred's commentary when the game was either shown live or delayed over there? Assume it was shown in Oz.

(That Nix game review in the highlights did seem shorter than the rest. Did anyone run a stopwatch over it?)

you're not suggesting there are deficiencies in SKY's commentary team are you Feverish?

They do shorter highlights and voiceovers instead of commentators for less important games on the Premier League Review show - could be the same for the A League highlights? You would think that perth and us are the least popular teams in the australian market? I could be way wrong, just speculating... guess we'll see later in the season if this trend continues?

I would like Andrew to be a bit less vocal. In other words, pause man and let the game do the talking

It seems he hasnt got the changeover from radio to TV sorted yet, it is as if he is still giving a commentary for Radio Sports.  So Frustrating on Sunday.

I've seen two weeks of this program and I reckon it is pretty average.  30 minutes (more like 20-25 minutes is not enough time to cover 5 games.  This week they pretty muched just showed the goals from each game.  Admittedly there were plenty of goals, but to do a proper job it needs to be a hour.

Seemed to me like it was exactly the same format as the Premier League show, I guess with a highlights show there isn't to much room for variation but would like to see at least 2 of the games covered in a bit more depth.

He was alright. He talks way, way too much though. De Jong is better as the 2nd commentator though not much better. The good thing was that there wasn't anywhere near as much bias as there has been in the past - they at least tried to be professional.

Only good commentators in the league = Simon Hill, Brenton Speed and Trimmers as the comments guy

Bias ?  From Fred ?  ...are you seriously suggesting that Fred was Pro-Phoenix in his commentary ?

That's only marginally less likely than Jason Costigan being biased in favour of the Warriors.

I dont know all the aussie's names, but there's only one guy i like. He sounds a bit british in a way and his voice seems to add a bit of drama to the occasion...

Anyone know why Culina isn't playing in a higher league, reckon he dominated the whole game for the GCU

That'd be Simon Hill. Funny how ingrained into us that good commentators have to be/sound British. Of the Aussies I quite like Cockerill and even Harper provides good comedy value.

Not sure if Cockerill was born in NZ though I do remember Slater giving him sh*t for having a Kiwi connection.
Cockerill did say that his Grandmother is a Kiwi.
Cockerill is pro Phoenix also.

Bear in mind the EPL highlights is an hour for 10 games so in total there is the same time allocation for each game. There was also an inordinate amount of goals scored this week so highlights focused on that. Bar the Everton debarcle most EPL games are 2-3 goals max.

Its no longer a problem.

Mike Cockerill has a significant part of his ancestry from NZ, and is generally pretty supportive of our football when he can be...

Fred is much better suited to the comments man role, like he used to do alongside Gordon Irving back in the Kingz days... now if that combo could be recreated you would have a good broadcast...

Please bear in mind Fred never asked to be lead commentator... the SKY producer asked him, offered him a decent match fee etc - who wouldn't say yes???

The coverage on Fox Sports in Oz is direct from Sky so the Aussie get the delights of Fred and Andrew. I didn't think Andrew was too bad, Fred however...

And every A-League match is shown live here in Oz. The only difference with the Phoenix home games is that there's not the usual half an hour pre game show, tha program starts with the teams walking out

That's pretty poor really - why is that even the case?? Unfair on the Phoenix especially, and also the opponents on the day!
