1 German
1 American
1 Northern Irish
1 Costa Rican
1 Chinese
2 Ivorians
2 Scots
2 English
2 South Koreans
4 Brazilians
10 Kiwis
135 Aussies
Assumes Juhninho goes.
Compared with the MLS....
United States - 229
Argentina - 19
Canada - 12
Colombia - 8
Brasil - 8
England - 7
Interesting, the A-league seems to be pretty global in its recruitment. Is Africa more of a place where the A-league could recruit from? We've had a few Brazilian flops. Interesting how many Argentinians are in the MLS - is that also a potential target?

It's odd that clubs only seem to target Brazilians in the A-League - not other South American countries like Argentina.
Good African players are usually too expensive.

Argentinians....don't swear....
Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Its hardly odd considering Brazil's pedigree in futebol....there have been some flops but that was due to lack of time to study a player effectively. There are many great players who would love to have a downunder experience. Juninho and Romario would I'm sure reccommend the A League for a chance to see a different part of the world and playa different and more physical style of futebol.

Juninho has been critical of the physical nature of A-league football, so it seems doubtful that he would recommend the A-league for that particular reason

To be honest I want to see Ricki Herbert look for some African players. One with a lot of speed, strength, and a physical presence would be good.
Just out of interest, Wolfben said there are two Ivorians in the A-league, I know one of them is Jonas Salley, but who is the other one?

Cheers Stevo.
Looking at those stats I'd say we need to get a heap more kiwi's into the a-league (and not just with the Phoenix). We have plenty who would make the grade, and Ricki would be able to keep a better eye on them and see if they are good enough to be in the All Whites.

Just to clear it up, that's not a complete list for the MLS is it? Because 3 kiwis are in MLS teams...

I know of one playing for the gunners and he's scoring goals at will. Bit out of our price range me thinks!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Problem with getting heaps of kiwis in the A-league is...for australian teams, a kiwi player counts as a foreign player, so theyre hardly likely to sign an average NZer when they got the whole world to scout players out from. The only reason there is 10 is because of the phoenix...we are actually have a slight advantage over the other teams because of the fact we can sign both..go us
Allegedly

Think of it as a special privelidge. I for one am not gonna try argue it :D

I hope the other a-league teams don't kick up a fuss about it though, because if we were to lose that we would be in a lot of trouble.

By my count, there were 13 Brazilians who played during the 2007/08 season with an A-League club...
Phoenix: Felipe, Cleberson, George, Daniel
Melbourne: Leandro Love
Newcastle: Denni, Mario Jardel
Queensland: Marcinho, Reinaldo
Sydney: Juninho, Patrick
Adelaide: Cassio, Diego
Assuming Juninho goes, there're just 4 left....Daniel, Cassio, Diego and Love....doesn't say much for their longevity does it?

I thought Mario Jardel was Portugeuse, and I'm pretty sure Reinaldo got Australian citizenship.

Real shame that there are only 10 kiwis playing in the A-League. There is probably a case to be made under CER employment laws about restraint of trade. Kiwis currently do not require a work visa to be employed in Oz. Its an open employment market for us. Even though we are Oceania and Oz is Asia, employment laws would override football rules. Kiwis players can currently be employed playing for state football leagues in Oz.....anyway its one for the lawyers to sort out.
Probably too big a can of worms to open!!!!

I'm not too sure it's to do with trans Tasman employment laws, more likely the quality of NZ player available.
