A-league points

I see Bling's mini-tournament with Blackburn etc has quite a cool scoring system.
3 points for win
1 point for a draw
1 point for each goal scored
I think this would be an awesome format for the a-league. Certainly would promote attacking football

So you can lose 6-5 and get more points than a team that won ?

why not? imagine if we took 9 points away from our win over No-fans United

and to be honest, if you scored 5 goals, you've probably earned more points than a team that may have only scored 1 goal :)

But where is the reward for a good defence. That is part of the game as well.

NASL tried something along these lines in the days that they lured Pele, Rodney Marsh and the like to the States. I think they 3 points for a win + had a point a goal up to a maximum of 3 goals.
Just created confusion really.
Of course they didn't do "ties" either. Introduced shoot-outs, where by a player dribbled the ball from half-way to take on the goalie in a one-on-one.
Those crazy yanks!

I think they do that type of penalty shoot-out at the NZ Marist tournament. I know they did one year when I was a guest player but someone from a Marist club might know for sure. Interesting experience anyway.
Fuck this stupid game

what about being allowed to pick the ball up?

I used to love those type of shoot outs on the few occasions they got shown on TV. Much more fun to do down the park with your mates and jumpers for goalposts. Would also make much better h/t entertainment than what we get sometimes.
Don't like the "bonus" point system for any sport really, but I'm sure someone with a spreadsheet will work out what would have happened over the last few seasons if this had been the case.
I'm slightly disappointed!

Those types of shoot-outs are how they do it in ice hockey.

this is common in pre-season tournaments isnt it? Arsenal's 'emirates cup' is structured the same way i believe

Bad idea. I wouldn't watch a league that had this format

Yup, still do. Best part of tourny - interesting to see the different strategies it allows.
Edit: Best part of the football at tourny

I remember the national league here experimented with a slightly toned-down version of this kind of law. It was the normal 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss, except a bonus point was awarded for scoring 4 goals i think. So that way it promoted attacking football, without being ridiculous.
From what I remember it worked OK, mind you I was 9 years old at the time.

Sounds like the 4 try bonus point thing in rugby which I'm not a fan of either

Just introduce zero points for a scoreless draw. That would be enough to open things up. However there is plenty of strategy involved in the defensive game which may then get ignored.
Until FIFA international tournaments would advocate any differences in the point system, why educate the players in adopting something that may restrict the way things are at the moment? The transition from the local game to the international game may be an even bigger gap in strategy being employed for some players and coaches. It's like English teams not readdressing their playing style when they are playing in Europe against European teams in the 90s, they got totally trashed. such new systems are ok for a short mini tournament between various team types but for a regular league season, you asking to educate the players with less concept of defensive strategy which would just totally suck.
Also it would totally be advantageous to the top teams when they knock in numerous goals and then the playing for the league title would be over in half the season gone.
I can't see having point for goals would help any exciting close title runs at the season's end or allow the underdog a chance at nabbing game and be close on the point table. It will deflate the game and less people will turn up to the matches if they are not close to nabbing a higher place on the table or fancying their chances on succeeding or avoiding relegation.
I imagine that the lower teams would play in front of empty crowds towards the seasons end.
It would be totally bias towards the top teams and most teams would lose more crowd numbers in the latter part of the season.

I have done the calculations of the table for the last season of the A League should this format have been in exsistence, and it makes some interesting reading. Top of the league would be Adelaide, followed closely by Essingdon. Melbourne Victory would have been a long way back in third. We would have finished bottom, 8 points below the Melbourne Heart.
For that reaon, I'm out.

But then everyone does this and everyone gets the same amount of 4 goal bonus points and the whole thing is pointless...

Some even cleverer teams would score a goal each and then when they were 4-3 up and the opposition expecting them to organise one more goal before beginning play for real, except they'd park the bus and take all the points.

Goals from inside your own half should be worth 2 goals, and bacon tastes best when fried to a crisp.

Now here's an idea.
Every goal is worth 5 points. And as a reward, you can get a couple more points if you can kick the ball over the bar from about where you scored your goal.
And as for penalties, why not award them everywhere! But you have to take your penalty from where the offence occurred, and just to make it a bit easier - no goalie but you must kick it over the cross bar. Because there may be quite a few of them, say 3 points for a "penalty goal".
Naaaaah! That's just way too wacky to ever catch on.
Sorry. Dumb idea.

No, much simpler: a goal is three points, over the bar is one point. Oh, and you are are allowed to catch the ball, run with it for three paces, and punch it (but not throw it).
Also, only mad Irishmen should be allowed to play it.

No. I take it maths isn't your strong point.
Three for me, and two for them.

My statement did not say 'the' team that won but 'a' team that one.
In the event of a 6-5 no they wouldn't have got more points in losing but another team in the same competition winning 1-0 would get less than a side that lost shipping 6.
