A-League Rivalry - our Nemesis ?

After watching the Arsenal Vs Tottenham derby game on the weekend, I was wondering who would we end up having the biggest rivalry against. Obviously when the A-League expands to a second NZ team that would be the big derby game of the season.

I voted the Jets, just because I am still pissed that we undeservedly lost to them the other week.  Can't wait to play them again and fark them up! energy24.72007-09-18 14:39:45

CCM

Similar size & potential - and seem to taken a similar approach in community engagement as them.

I think they will be the key team to benchmark ourselves against

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

i rekon CCM would be a better team to have as a rival.
theres no point in having sydney, everyone hates sydney anyway, just cos they're sydney.

we have a hated rival in newcastle and they hate us just as much back

you want a team that will hate you in return

We'll struggle with that.

You'll get a few in every fan base that spout the crap about an Australian league but most seem to be hoping we'll do okay.

That's because a NZ team in the A-League is traditionally an under dog. That combined with our shiny new status means that, for the first third of the season at least, we are the under dogs. Once we're established and have claimed a few scalps, it will change.

I can't vote for a nemesis yet. We haven't played everybody and we're not close enough to anyone to make it geographical.

One day we'll get a second NZ team in to the league. Away trips to face the Christchurch Crash will spice up our rivalry stakes

CCM - they seem to be a jinx to us so far ...

All it needs to start something off is possibly a physical game (read: fight) to get some extra passion in the fixture.

Maybe our own pizza gate

I voted Newcastle , a couple of games the Nix have dominated and lost

good poll! i voted Sydney but i don't know why...it would be cool to have a derby-type opponent but so hard to agree on one! Hard News, make us agree...

I think once we play every team twice and see how ther esults, call on the pitch and overall feel of the game, then we can start to meaningly choose rivals.

For now i say...Jets or CMM, Just cause they beat us...c**tz.

Ditto.

UberGunner: is it too late to add another option to the poll reading "too early to decide"?

In 8-10 years time - either the Canterbury Lambs, or the Auckland Wannabes

this is based on my eternal optimism that football will take off in NZ and the A-league will grow to a 12 team comp

Ditto ditto. We need some cruel and obvious miscarriage of justice to go against us in a big match to establish a bitter foe.

I say again, Joel Griffiths.

Sydney cause they are the team that the Knights/Phoenix have probably beaten the most. Good to start a derby tradition on the rightside of the ledger

Knights and the Phoenix are two different squads, its just offensive making them appear the same team.

We have a huge rivalry already with...the Kings/Knights.

There seems to be more of an impetus to beat their standards than beating any other team. Even in our chants, "We're not Auckland anymore!" and our enforcement of this team as a Wellington institution rather than the "NZ Phoenix"

That being said, I voted for Newcastle. We've lost to them twice counting the preseason, both in close matches that could have gone either way but they didn't.

That, and Joel Griffiths.

Apart from a stack of Sydney owners walking out and joining the Mariners and leading anti Sydney chants and taking a pair of scissors to a Sydney scarf... plus the coast local rivalry with Newcastle which I can assure you is pretty intense.

Perth's rivalry used to be Melbourne Knights, they used to hate each other but when the Knights got chopped it was sort of abandoned.

The Clogs don't seem to have a rival.  Melbourne vs Syndey.  Melbourne vs Adelaide. Sydney vs Centra Coast. Newcastle vs Central Coast are the main ones.

I hate all other 7 teams in our league when we are playing them.

Apart from that, I don't really care about them.

The current lot of matches actually looks a bit like a derby/nemesis weekend (where each club is playing its closest rival either geographically or grudgewise, who isn't already playing someone else):
ccm v planes
syd v melb
perth v adelaide
us v q'land

We're too new to be talking about rivalries just yet I think. But I'm voting for Adelaide coz its Aloisi's old club and there was quite a bit of pre match friction when we last played

Branko Culina annoys me, whether because of his arrogance before we kicked their arse in Sydney, or because of their attempts to get around the salary cap, and the whole bling thing

are they Auckand(ers) in disguise?
