A-League Rivals - Who are our main rivals?

This question has never been answered properly. Most other clubs have rivalries the biggest being Sydney vs Melbourne, Melbourne vs Adelaide and Central Coast vs Newcastle.

The two that make the biggest case for me however are:

Perth Glory - Often we have been grouped with Perth as the two worst teams in the A-League. This has created an even greater desire to beat them so we can prove ourselves to the rest of the league that we are not in the same league as them.

Gold Coast United - Stole our best player in our short history from us and then stole what looked like a terrific replacement in Porter from us.

So what do you guys think?

First instinct was GCU, but we just hate them. For it to be a true rivalry the feeling has to be mutual, and I'm not sure it is in this case. And besides everyone hates GCU.
This sways me towards Perth... and we are both geographically removed from the rest.
I'm not sure we can really say we have a true rivalry with anyone yet though.

I'd say Perth.  I'd love to beat them 3 from 3 this year like we did in season 1.  Still hate Gold Coast.

My second favourite team would be North Queensland, though.

GCU are b*****d to us from the very beginning. They keep taking our best interest and ideas by throwing money in their free cost lifestyle to seduce Smeltz and Porter. They would invite any players we have on trial as well to get the best.

Who cares about Perth Glory? Enough said about them.

So I voted GCU but under protest because it should be the Auckland teams that we despise the most.

If there was an Auckland A-league team, they would be our main rivals so we just better wait until they re-apply. So because of that possibility, I support an Canterbury getting an A-league team before them anytime. Auckland s**ks because of the Knights failure. But then since they failed, we wouldn't have the Wellington Phoenix. So in weird way, that was really good that they s**k.

So yeah, it still has to be any Auckland teams, even though they don't have an A-league team.

So the NZFC's Auckland City and Waitakere United are our main rivals when we get our Reserve team in the NZFC.

Yeah anything Aussie does make the grade and I guess they see the kiwis as the same. Plenty of Aussies don't want us there and it seems to irk all of them at the same time when we beat any of their sides, so that pleases me very well.

Yeah it has to be both ways so Perth is more likely. After how poorly we played against them last season the rivalry isn't one-sided anymore and they appear to have a good side this season.

GCU for me. Smeltz and Porter going there hurt.
The insufferable "unbeatable" stance of Messrs Creosote and Blowberg even more painful.

First signs are GCU will be very competitive but would love to see the Nix be the first to take them down.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Well, Adelaide are our rivals in FIFA 08 so ...

But I think Perth or Gold Coast, though at the Perth game last year I don't think they had any supporters over here, maybe 1 or 2. Pretty tough for us to get any real serious rivalries when it is difficult to go to the away games.

Everyone hates GCU, and we don't have a true rival so they'll. They probably don't give a sh*t about what we're up to, but it's always going to hurt that they took Smeltz and Porter.

They are the team we want to beat the most, easy vote.
You know we belong together...

I don't think there is anyone obvious.

We were the bogey team for Syndey FC last year, and Adelaide has given us some unfortunate hidings. But I don't think any of the other teams would single us out so I don't think there is one significant rivalry.

Well, because we don't have a Reserve Team then I'd go for "All of the above + NZFC"

Besides which, as I said last time YOU brought this topic up, it's not something that can be forced.
It will just evolve over time.
Be patient ... although, as AWB mentioned, some events may cause it to happen quickly ...

I don't think I brought up this topic up last time. This is just a question of who we feel is our biggest rival - remember really it is our decision.

I voted Sydney as they are the closest game to us and they have Alex Brosque playing for them!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

To me, a rivialry has to be both ways.  i.e. we see team X as a rival and they see us as thier rival  (Melbin/Bling for example).  And tbh I doubt any team would think we are their rivals.

I dont think the gold coast can be considered our main rival because they have Brisbane to battle against.. So i have voted sydney because they must hate loosing to us! and we always seem to have good battles with them..
Would live to have our own derby with another NZ based team!!!!

Every aussie team hates to lose to us.
As others have said, we don't really have 'one' rival, we have all of them  because they are all aussie teams.
And nothing sweeter than sticking it up 'em, no matter which rednecked, self congratulatory part of aussie thay come from. The Hicks from the west, inbreds from Adelade, big noters from Sydney, Melbourne and GCU, Tropos from Townsville ( JC townsville is a hole), the smart ones from Brisbane, the 'deliverance' banjo players from CCM or the bogans from Newcastle. They are ALL fair game.
Because the Nix are 'out of the loop', true rivalry will only come from another NZ team.

To people who are saying things along the lines of "We have no rival..." Then ask yourself this, who do you like beating the most and losing the least to and also what team do you think likes beating US the most and losing to us the least?

Did ya?, but its not really relevant  because we don't have one rival, we are out of the loop.
Any win against teams from 'the dark side' is a good one.

But no club seems to really hate us more than any other, but there are definately clubs we dislike more. Bigger hate = bigger rivals IMO.
