So what's the deal? You can have 4 subs and they can all come on? Or only 3? If so why not 7 subs?

Please help a noob out

You can have 3 subs come on per game just like most leagues around the world.

and yes the question over whether or not more players should be allowed on the bench has been debated many a time. The FFA has often used the excuse of the extra cost of travelling players, but nowadays, lots of squads are taking 16 or 17 players anyway.

I wouldn't say put it up to 7, but even just one more player to bring it up to 5, that way the costs aren't being raised by much, the coaches will have more options tactically, in the case of an injury there will be more of a chance a similar player could come on, and players will have more of a shot of playing.

I think it would be a huge advantage to players like Rojas/ Costa who could be put on the bench with the chance of being played if we were cruising. I think Costa would benefit a lot from it because so many times I have felt like there was no need at all to switch certain players but they do because that is all the choice the coaches have. If Greenacre went down, It would work to have more options on a bench

Most leagues? It's all leagues and official competitions. From the laws of the game:

Up to a maximum of three substitutes may be used in any match played in an of

ficial competition organised under the auspices of FIFA, the confederations or the member associations. The rules of the competition must state how many substitutes may be nominated, from three up to a maximum of seven.

For friendlies etc:

In national A team matches, up to a maximum of six substitutes may be used. In all other matches, a greater number of substitutes may be used provided that:

the teams concerned reach agreement on a maximum number
the referee is informed before the match

If the referee is not informed, or if no agreement is reached before the match, no more than six substitutes are allowed.

16/17 is probably most common, I don't see any reason to not stretch it to 5, and perhaps remove the compulsory 'keeper rule. Oska2009-09-22 18:56:37

Absolutely. I think if you've got someone in your team who can fill that position that's not specifically a keeper then sweet. I mean in Fifa '09 once Fabregas got to 99 I then trained him as a keeper. It was brilliant. Surely we can do the same with Greenacre or Bertos?

at the idea of training Greenie or Bertos to be keepers just because it works in a computer game!

I'd like the compulsory keeper on the bench dropped and left to the discretion of the manager, but that's because the number of times you need the reserve keeper versus the tactical flexibility gained makes it a reasonably safe gamble... not because I think we can bring Greenie or Bertos up to professional goalkeeping standards!
