Are they going to do that for every team? They'll be rooted when they get to central coast:
'Will Central Coast finish higher than 1st this season...'
'Will Central Coast finish higher than 1st this season...'

they are all as bad as each other - so american and utterly unthoughtful as much as we love having a wellington football team to support.

By the by - Wellington Phoenix are winning the poll on that second site by 1% over Sydney FC. Soon we'll be winning the A-League too... I really should put some money on that.
actually phoenix are dead last on 3% if you look closely the percentage is ontop of the team name not below.

What I was trying to say is it isn't just American teams that have nicknames.
I think the difference is that in America, the teams seem to be known more by their nicknames rather than where they are from, whereas in most other countries the teams generally go by their location, and the nicknames take a lesser limelight. Is that why you think Phoenix is a rubbish name?
BTW yes galaxy is a stupid name.

Speaking of American teams, New York Red Bull is a pretty pathetic name.
Wellington Sony anyone?

Grasshopper Zurich?

Grasshopper is a hundred year old club, not named after a company that popped in and bought the club and renamed it.

I know that.
But does that make it a good name because it's 100 years old?
I don't mind it myself, less of the sell out that the Red Bull names are. Plus Wynton played there.

I totally agree with you on calling teams by their sponsor's names. But I do think Grasshopper is a strange name. I know it was founded by an Englishman but no idea why he called it Grasshopper. At least Phoenix has a good idea behind it. ie the team that was borne from the ashes of a seemingly burned attempt to get a team into th A-League..

Aww come on are you guys moaning over an Australian website whose poll is made up by a % of bias Australian fans that doesn't know anything about the off season transfer system??
Seriously that is real sad. Who the heck cares what they think? The end of the season result is all that matters to me. Opinion polls are just that. Opinions, I rather deal with facts as they come.
