I've been reflecting.....and thinking....not often that
happens!
When in Melbourne and out for a few post match bevs with the Victory supporters at the Charles Dickens pub, we had a great time chanting and singing songs and humourous banter.
Although massively outnumbered we held our own with some Yellow Fever classics and towards closing time the landlord put on a song through the pub PA and the 60 or so Victory fans all joined in. I was pretty slammed by this stage so can't recall the song or any lyrics but remember being in awe of the power of these lads all singing a song about Melbourne city and their team.
It was more than a chant or a few verses of adapted English based terrace songs, it was an anthem and we need one.
Maybe Feverish, Santy, Nerms, Ewan, Gingerboy, Cosmo or Feverette could shed more light or tell me I was too hammered and am just getting carried away with the occasion of a first away trip for the Nix.
Anyone for a Wellington anthem....to get the Bencher rocking like pre-match for the first home game vs Melbourne back on August 26th?

Are you sure that was it Feverish? I heard that one played at the Dome after the final whistle but am sure the one in the Charles Dickens was a different tune to that?
Regardless, great to know you're onto something and with you being two steps ahead its good to see you can walk in a straight line once again....
Races.....hmmmmmm, could be dangerous!!!

Hey Coxey welcome back. That is definitely the song they were playing/singing in the Charles Dickens after the match - it seemed to go on for about ten minutes.
Feverish - going back to the races for more punishment?
Went to the family day at the races yesterday. We're all happy as we got free entry with our Phoenix stuff, the kids got give-away balls from the Phoenix players and I got to talk to Mossy

Worst song ever. Terrible stuff. None of the fans got into it until
the grand final last year when they were all so happy they didn't
care.
It's AFL-esque.

I think you're referring to the fans anthem, "Melbourne
belongs to me" as opposed to the official (and terrible) "Victory
the Brave".

Sounds vaguely familiar so they were probably playing it at Charles Dickens. Coxey is this the one you heard? http://youtube.com/watch?v=PKAJguwrl_U

"Melbourne belongs to me"? Is that a bit like "tomorrow
belongs to me" from Cabaret? Now that's a motivating song to
get the Melbourne youth going!
...
...
Agree, though. Song needed!
I know, I know, its serious!

It was, ahem, 'borrowed' from some Oi punk band called something
like Cockney Sparra I believe, and the original is called "England
belongs to me".
It's not really my cup of tea to be honest.

Fair enough. A bit Oi-oi (Cockney Sparrow were hard core, in
every sense of the words, West Ham fans from memory)
Back to Wellington.
Does "I wish I was in Wellington" (Mutton Birds) work -
suitably ironic, but posibly a bit too dirge like for an
anthem. I think a local touch would be good (we're not (just)
english anymore). But sometimes its better just to let these things
happen ... and anything might emerge!
I know, I know, its serious!

What about a bit of 'Quinn the Eskimo'?
"come on without
come within
you've not seen nothing
like the mighty Wellington!"

Tardastic
They've tardified an song to be proud of into something you would hear at the aerial pingpong at the MCG
For comparison and discussion: the Jimmy Barnes Sydney FC song

Aerial pingpong? That's such a gay, Sydney-esque putdown!
Hopefully next season we can get the boys to run through a
banner when they take the field too!

Thats exactly it, cheers KP. Sounds fairly naff on Youtube but in a pub with 50-60 singing it sounded awesome.....
I hope something comes out of it for us and wasn't wanting to copy, just felt it was something the Tards sang with real pride and passion and would like us to have our own to which we can do the same.
Feverish and Feverette....you were obviously both more hammered than me cos you insisted it was "Victory the Brave" they were singing in the Charles Dickens.....
