Anyway - how about the Phnix place and advert in the Southern Cross backpackers magazine that gets handed out round the UK.
When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!
In the sponsored links - there is a link for the phoenix game - adsense has it. But I think that has more to do with your Isp than the page you are viewing? So if you are using a nz isp you will see nz ads
Sorry - just re-read my post, "if I was in the UK...mighty phoenix!" Was a slight tounge in cheek remark about leaving the UK to watch the 'Nix, maybe needed a winky face there?
The Advert in the centre of the page..."See Beckham in Wellington"

GRRRRRRRR

The answer to life's problems are rarely found at the bottom of a beer glass - but it's always worth a look.
Let's review some facts:
1. Phoenix are paying all the costs of the game.
2. The council are only paying to publicise the game. The council are not paying Beckham's wages!
3. The money is already budgeted for in the events fund specially set up for these sort of things. We're not sacrificing library books or anything like that for the game
4. The events fund is paid for by business ratepayers.
5. Wellington will be full of tourists which will get the place buzzing and bring in a lot of money for local business.
6. This is likely to be the only time the Ring of Fire is ever full for a Phoenix game.
OK, so Beckham may not be the greatest player in the world anymore, and there are a number of teams like AC Milan or Man Utd who would play a higher standard of football.
But, Beckham is the most famous footballer in the world, and he will fill the stadium with non-football fans like nobody else could.
Hopefully a few of those people will see what real passion and skill in sports is, and go on to be Phoenix fans.
You seem to be so down on the council.
We have to compete for these events; would you rather they went to Auckland or Christchurch instead?
If you want to live somewhere boring where nothing ever happens, why don't you go and live in Timaru?
I want to live in an exciting city where there's lots of things going on.
6. This is likely to be the only time the Ring of Fire is ever full for a Phoenix game.
Really??, you of little faith and even less imagination!
I've spoken to 4 fans of British teams in the last week (2 Poms , 2 Kiwis) between them they've been to only one game!! i was amazed - but it does indicate heaps of untapped crowd potential.
Wait til we make the playoffs!! When we do I wouldn't risk turning up on the day hoping for a ticket -CMON YOU NIX!!

I was just thinking in terms of the size of Wellington vs the size of say Melbourne.
Yeah, I know one Pom who had that premiership attitude. He claimed not to have enjoyed the game, bizarrely!
i am all for becks and a bit of support from the council
People from Timbuktoo will not see that ad.

Yawn !!
1) Good on them
2)yes and i simply disagree with this use of public money
3)Library books ,heaven forbid!
4) The rates are not specifically tagged you know that !(also i am a business ratepayer)
5)Whoohoo!
6)Not if they go on to develop in the competitive tournament that they are involved in and maybe win the A league one day i reckon they would or should that be will fill the stadium, whats more they would have achieved this through their own industry, imagination and endevour not through council marketing !
"OK, so Beckham may not be the greatest player in the world anymore"
Was he ever ,i must have missed that ,granted good with set piece dead balls, well maybe not penalty's in high pressure internationals (divet divet)
"But, Beckham is the most famous footballer in the world, and he will fill the stadium with non-football fans like nobody else could."
I would be more inclined to say the best known and possibly one of the richest sportsman in the world today! rather than the most famous footballer, theres an old Brazilian chap who could easily justify that particular plaudit!
Sure he will fill the stadium but what does that prove so did Elton John don't i see an upsurge in piano players ,it only proves that advertising works!
"Hopefully a few of those people will see what real passion and skill in sports is, and go on to be Phoenix fans."
Friendly football games ,passion skill !!Well you never know lets hope so!
Yes i do disagree with some of the the things the council do but thats not to say that i don't agree with some of the things they do as well, its just personal objectivity and a lack of sycophant feelings towards people in positions of power, cant help it ,anyway im sure the council aren't exactly trembling in their collective ratepayer funded boots when i vent my feelings on a football forum!
Was there any suggestion ever that the game would be played anywhere else? i don't think so and i would be surprised if John Banks in Auckland would be as spendthrift with other peoples money or as secretive for that matter as her worship here is!
This is the fourth world capital city i have lived in (no i wasn't thrown out of the others)it is a lovely thriving little city nothing wrong with that ,by simply questioning a couple of things that the local council get up to is hardly the equivalent of bombing Dresden so calm down and enjoy the kick about with Becks ,hope its fulfilling day of football for you,i am looking forward more to the game immediately prior and immediately after this "superb showcase!"

but, football (particularly in NZ) depends on raising/keeping high the club's profile in the media, this game has already contributed to that, plus next monday tv 3's piece on Terry P. and the Nix may not have happened without the Beckham game,
also, i reckon it'll be linked to a big (relatively) sponsorship deal
by the end of it all i guess it'll be like xmas carols ( = thank goodness that's over) but in the meantime it is one hell of a canny move
The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!

Exactly it is a very clever business decision and theres nothing wrong with that ,but the game itself has no significance at all other than to risk players who may be needed before and shortly afterwards in A league games , still i suppose our squad is so huge we will be able to handle it and its all about priority's.
Love to know what the head coach really thinks about this especially if the rest of the season is buggered after the circus leaves town ,see how many neutrals or new fans hang about then!!

and no one gets injured - then a clear winning decision (bigger the numbers: the better the decision)
someone gets injured, still a winning decision if the player has cover and all the above numbers end up making a difference to ongoing crowd numbers and ongoing sponsorship
first one to find a crystal ball gets to decide the outcome of this argument

Hate to admit it but from a PR long term point of view you are probably right ,as with a lot of things in life nowadays its more image over substance !
Still i think its a fine line the owner is walking with regards to the effects this game will have on this season, but its his ball and his back yard so he can do what he wants !
Im taking my jumper off the goal post pile and going home in the huff !

A) We will probably be Fielding our B Team (With the likes of Spoonley, Draper, Costa, Ferrante and Old Starting)
B) There will be large numbers of substitutions
C) It's a friendly game so it isn't as if the players need to bust a gut to make key tackles etc
D) The A-League game is being played first, so little/unused subs can take part and once the game is over players will have almost a week to rest up before the next match.
I personally will not be going to the game as I'm a season ticket holder, so already have a ticket to the Adelaide game so the package has less value to me and I'm a poor student and they aren't offering a student ticket price.
Still, I think this game is a massive coup for the Phoenix, they will get a major cash injection, gain some bonus media exposure and if even say 1000 new people start coming regularly to Phoenix games after seeing Beckham (Given that there are likely to be over 20,000 more people than usually attend our games a conversion rate of 1 in 20 seems to be a pretty reasonable assumption) that represents a significant mid/long term boost in revenue.
