Have looked through a few pages but cant finad anything..... He was originally signed as injury cover for Pav... now that Pav is back, and looked good value for his time on the park on Saturday, has Smith been released?

He was on the bench yesterday, wasn't he?

Yes he was. I think he's injury cover for Pantelis now, and we're looking into signing him long-term. It would be good to see him challenging Ward for a winger's role, and substituting for Greeny/Pav as a second striker.

As understand that his injury cover contract for Pav runs out this week
As yet he has not signed a new contract as an injury replacement for Pantelis
It makes sense he will unless Riki decides he has enough cover in Daniel, Tsattalios, Lindsay and Downey(who's back in traini

Would love to see him stay, having the likes of Daniel, Pav, Sanchez and Smith on the bench would have sounded like a dream come true just a month ago

We had a very, very attacking bench yesterday, it was a shame we didn't use it. Having Daniel and Smith come on late in the game with Pav would have given us lots of pace up front to run around Sydney.

I have no clue why ricki doesnt ever make subs when we are trying to draw out the time.

things are gonna be very interesting once sanchez is back, and to a lesser extent even downey...

I'm sure refs are supposed to add 30secs for all subs so shouldn't waste time.

Having Daniel and pace in the same sentence just seems so wrong.

But if he came on and dove in the right place we could have got a penalty or free kick

Refs are "supposed" to add however long it takes. There's no hard and fast rules on it.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I think it's more to halt the opposition's momentum. Ricki might not have wanted to make any changes and rather the team on the pitch to close it out. Point being the other side of the coin is that making a change could disrupt our boys and they way we were defending etc.

Fuck this stupid game

Exactly... boys were defending ok.... was no need to change it and it may have caused more problems than it solved.

I think Smith has been very good value and I was disappointed when he was on the bench while Brown on the park at the beginning of yesterday's game.

Also thought Brown was the most anonymous player during the game except for one single stunning lob over the keeper for our second goal.

I'll be stunned if Smith doesn't get an extended contract and significant game time.

Daniel/Ward/Brown/Lia/Sanchez/Smith

backlog much? who is your guaranteed starter?

Permalink Permalink

id go brown lia sanchez as well, but... would prefer manny in there and brown out. Or possibly ward in there instead of brown. or smith.

But to be honest, where will ifill play when sanchez returns? who drops out out of brown, ward or bertos?

Probably ward unfortunately

Rather have Ward in there than Brown.

that was the unfotunately.

However i dont really want ward losing the ball down the middle either. So I guess brown ward sanchez is the best combo,

but would rather have leo on the bench than ward- meaning ward to start over leo

Alex Smith would count as an import, and I think we may have filled our import allocation. Is this right or can we def sign him if we want him.

Heard an interview a few weeks back on Piney's sat morning show and at that point he'd not been spoken to about staying on.

We have 5 imports with Smith.

5 is the limit for this season, goes down to 4 for the next.

Sh*t, so we'd have to not offer another contract to either Tony Warner, Dani Sanchez or Alex Smith (the latter if we don't sign him the the rest of this season).

Ifill and Manny might not be imports though, as they would both be eligible to apply for NZ citizenship. Of course this is assuming that Ifill wants to have another few years at the Phoenix.

Now that we have more players fit, I don't think Alex Smith brings a lot to the table.

What do they bring to the table?

Greenie - runs around a lot, good work rate but ultimately for not much reward.

Smith - pretty versatile but never excels in any role.

to me it's a no brainer. Send Warner packing or turn him into the GK coach.
I don't understand using an import slot on a GK unless we were talking about someone very very good. Warner hasn't impressed me much - personally. Therefore I think we could find any Aussie keeper to be Paston's back up for next year and I'd definitely keep Smith on our books.

I like the guy and the way he plays. Let's not forget he is also a utility player, allegedly being able to play FW, MF and also RB.
I hear people say: "now that we have a bunch of fit players"... let's not forget that until a couple of weeks ago we were lucky to have 15 players available!
Injuries will continue to happen (hopefully at a slower rate than previously) and add to that our WOEFUL discipline when it comes down to being booked/sent off and there you have it..
..we need Smith at least till the end of the season.

Warner has done OK. So has Smith. GK is an essential position so you have to have confidence in whoever is in goal. If you cannot find an established Kiwi or Aussie you could take a risk on Paston plus a rookie, but it would be a significant risk. Does Imray actually count as a Kiwi? If so would he be good enough as a backup? Anyhow, we signed a contract with Warner for the season so we should stick with it.

Smith is OK and I would hang onto him once his injury cover contract expires unless there are plans to sink money into someone who will really add an extra dimension to the team. He is good enough for the a-league bit I'm not convinced he is good enough for what you would expect from an import spot.

Sorry RJ, maybe I didn't explain clearly that my point was about next season, not this season. I guess I got two things mixed up (e.g. keep Smith at least for the rest of the season AND replace Warner with an Aussie/Kiwi for next year).

I think Imray is not yet a Kiwi. i don't know him personally but I seem to remember that he was in the process of getting citizenship in the next year or so (?). Can anyone confirm?
Having seen him in action many times, I think he is DEFINITELY up to A-League standards. Would love him to see in goal for the Nix once Paston hangs his boots.

Imray must be a kiwi now, otherwise we had 6 imports for the game in Rnd 2.
