nobody in our squad U23 worth spending that on at the mo. But good if a big club comes looking, can say ""stay here and you can have a $150,000 pay rise"

good point - it is better keeping young players in NZ than having them play in Europe, isn't it.

It does depend where, if the option is Division 3 in Sweden, backwoods Romania, or AFC Wimbledon then the A-League is probably a better bet...

but they aren't "big clubs"

This $150k marquee youth scheme is all good (if we have the money).

We put our currently highest paid U-23 into the marquee bracket, at the SAME pay he is currently getting, thus freeing up his salary for another player. No need to pay him the full $150k.

E.g. say Hearfeld is getting paid $75k, make him marquee so we then we have an extra $75k to spend under the salary cap, which, depending on how much we havbe already spent and how much cash we actually have, could be the difference in salary needed to lure a half decent RB for example.

On the other hand, if we're already near our salary cap, keeping the marquee spot free as an incentive for someone to stay next year when their contract runs out would also be beneficial, as potentially we could offer them a '150k pay-rise'.

Chris James or Winston Reid would be smart choices for the 'nux.
