Claims Football Could Take Over Rugby

http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/newsdetail1.asp?storyID=122116

Talk like this just makes me feel all warm inside. I'd love to see the egg chasers sweat on it.

Now the 12:00 news on Radio Sport today had soundbites from Ernie Merrick about the Phoenix.  Not sure if that means there was an interview with him at some point or what.

from memory that's pretty much what he said on morning report - -so i guess newstalk got it from there - I don't think he was trying to stir things up (I'd rather we tried to put a lid on expectations and take 'rugby' by surpise) he was just responding to a question from Geoff Robinson

April Lose just had Pignata on Radio Sport and was his typical "know all" self.

Obviously he know nothing about football and basically spent the whole time continually prodding Pignata - "Soccer can take over rugby. Are you serious?"

I never heard the discussion, just the aftermath.  Sitting on the Hutt Road swearing at the radio...

I suspect the media more interested in stirring this up than Pignata. Pignata would be silly to pick his own fight - bc sports media will just use as an excuse to bash the Phoenix if things dont go well on the pitch.

Of course, we wll know that rugby will be relegated to a provincial novelty within a decade.

Pignata was quite right that rugby coaches need to start worrying. Whoever was interviewing him was an actual pillock, picking holes in what he said and trying to make it sound laughable.

It might take a wee bit longer than that!, but if i eat sensibly and go easy on the booze, i might just live long enough to see it,

or i could just carry on getting fatter  and just enjoy the early decades of football's inevitable rise

either way  - Pheonix til i die
