A bad season for the Red Diamonds was winning the ACL, and coming 2nd in the league, two points behind Antlers.  Oh for such a sh*t season...

I'll see if I can find who qualifies out of Japan, maybe a domestic league winner and cup winner go through.

Here it is:
The tournament holders receive a bye into the quarter-finals.

The group stage kicks off on March 12 and concludes on May 21. So theres plenty of time for them to do it, just have to list them as A league 1 & 2

Good possibilty of an extra one, maybe two A League teams in the 2009 comp if the AFC rep is to be believed. The Champions League seems to be growing in stature every year. Recently I saw a doco about the Urawa Reds in which the club president admitted that only last year did they finally get serious about winning (which they did). And the AFC are really trying boost its profile as a high class trophy, hence the greater number of teams from countries with true professional leagues.

Unfortunately it will be at least 2010 before the Phoenix can achieve total Asian domination.
