Well... Let's look on the brightside, Kosta scored that wonderful goal for meaning we've finally broken their clean sheet streak.
They won their second derby inside two months. What the fudge does it matter that a clean sheet streak has been broken?
Just trying to find some kind of silver lining, but I'm not exactly pleased. All I want is at least 1 derby win but it just doesn't feel like we'll see that this season.
Shark mood all around, hopefully we can batter Macarthur like we did last season
I'm not sure we've quite got the right mix of players this season. There were some signs today but we'll need to be at full strength and fitness to match them next time. Can only hope Rojas will be match fit asap, we're lacking a bit of quality up front at times. Don't wana be that guy but I think OVH has had his chance and needs to be let go. What's he ever done for us in front of goal? To beat the best you need a strong bench and it's lacking a bit.
So don’t be that guy.
Goal or assist every 93 minutes last season. That’s better than anyone still at the club. That’s actually better than anyone from last years squad except Zawada. But hey, blame the derby loss on the guy who came on for the last 10 minutes. Just sounds like you have a personal beef.
Where did you get that stat? As far as my research goes he's scored 1 goal in his senior career so far. Can't recall any assists off the top of my hat. All I'm saying is in my books he's not what we need to take us forward if we ever wana win something.
Don't get me wrong, Kosta was underwhelming except for the goal, so was Retre and a few others. Ishige was outmuscled and spent most of his time on the floor... I'm not blaming just OVH.
We're not a bad side, enough for top 6 for sure. But again this team won't win the league and that's what we're after at the end of the day.
First of all, stoked we broke their clean sheet record. Secondly, kudos to them, epic game day experience. Phoenix could learn from that Thirdly, good for the derby, good for the league and good for football in NZ.
BUT.. shark that hurts. Would’ve loved to have broken the record. We looked a bit lost at times.
Why are Auckland fans allowed to sit in the away zone?! What’s the point of an away zone. And security also need to sort out AFC fans coming into the zone purely to wind people up it will never end well for any body
They might get away with that stuff with YF but cant see some of the Aussie fans putting up with it. All you will get though is the standard nothing to see here until it turns to shark.
As an Aucklander obviously I’m Biased but it’s pretty crazy how Auckland FC are already a miles bigger club than the Phoenix.
Obviously the population and football interest between the cities is significant but despite results I just wanna mention how much of a buzz there is in the community about the club.
They’ve copped a lot of stick leading up to the season but they’re absolutely moping the floor with every other a league club in regards to how to run a club. They’re constantly in the community whether it be primary schools, football clubs, big name investors, or just social events amongst the city etc…
Plus they’re killing it on the pitch which is the main thing. Very impressive stuff top to bottom, they’re repping the benefits of their hard work and huge kudos to everyone involved.
Hope whoever they play next week absolutely smashes them, that is the cure for my mood right now.
They're away to Melbourne City. That'll be a real interesting game.
If they win their first ever game at AAMI Park, a venue which has been a graveyard for us over the years, that's just going to add to the already high level of frustration and annoyance.
if he’s fit I think David Ball is hard done by. He doesn’t the pace but at least he has the strength to hold the ball up for Costa to run off him. At the moment we are very lightweight up top and losing possession far too easily.

The Nix have the history, drawn much bigger crowds, made finals appearances and developed talent that went on to play in Europe.
AFC are barely 6 weeks in and off the back of a soft soft travel schedule.
By the time kick off comes around I will have been up for 24 hours, had 4 cancelled buses and trains, travelled last minute across half of north western Europe's ugliest towns on offer, to get home to the UK before we get done in by another storm again, AND YET... I am unequivocally so fired up farken! We're putting one past Paulsen today, people! I can feel it
You got that call bang on.
Wish I was in Auckland, whether here in SE England is shocking. Expect some games to get canned later today.

What? That’s some BS. Club needs to sort that out.
I hate this feeling. Years and years of supporting the phoenix and we never win anything. 😢 so much pain.
We need a striker too!
But I'll come back again next week and have hope. We still have a decent team and will likely end up top 4 or 5.
Imagine how good itd be if we beat them in a play off game...
I'm so sick of this playing out the back though. What's our plan B and C???
I went through a roller coaster of emotions (a few beers in) just writing that 😄 🤣
Colakovski is plan B. Rojas is plan comet. Piper is apparently our striker?
I've not seen anything from Cola that tells me he's better then Al-Taay. He was poor today.
I see some here are bagging OVH but him and Waine both have the same problem, only coming on with 10 to play at their respective clubs. That does not build match fitness, confidence or positional play when you're often chasing scores by then.
Rojas needs to start.

Bright side is the Nix, only play Auckland once more this season, 22nd Feb.
And currently the Phoenix are 3W & 1D against non AFC teams! GF 7 GD 1.
Not the bogey team, we want the Nix to have, but maybe Auckland are currently just a very good team. If they beat Melb City at AAMI Park I will definitely be starting to believe that. Though Verstraete might be out for awhile. About time they had some injuries. Chance for Finn Mckenlay.

Not technically an assist but didn't he give the 2nd to last pass for Zawada's goal in the semi? That header he gave had to be pinpoint to Kosta and it was.
Although I do agree with you. His time will be up after this season if he doesn't show anything in my mind
I think they are just a very tidy side with enough pace and plenty of physicality to crowd and force sides off the ball in midfield. You are always under pressure.
Meanwhile our guys were bouncing off them trying to match up.
Might be a bit different when we get Rojas starting. I think to beat sides like Auckland we need to have enough pace and skill to bypass the physicality. Rojas has it and, with Rojas drawing attention, Ishige would get a bit more time and space. And things can open up a bit for Kosta.
I think Auckland are just a very difficult match up for us at the moment until we really get the Rojas and Colakovski type players on the field with Ishige and Kosta and humming.
I thought we got dominated physically but despite that kept ourselves in the game.
Cracking day. Shark result. Evans was awful. Fudge the port for shirts off at 80.
Yeah I thought The Port were saying before the season they were gonna bring something to football that NZ has never seen before - and now they are resorting to ripping off other teams' traditions?...

Can’t show much if he’s an after thought. Had a strong season last year. Chief can’t figure out what to do this season. Payne at 9? I mean okay?
Feeling a little better after watching that back.
They are still sharke in front of goal. FFS. 3 defenders and the keeper should never have let Pijnaker win that. All that piss and wind over scarcely a shot hit in anger. Another oggie and a goal we should have defended every day of the week.
Our goal was an absolute worldie by comparison to anything they did. Cracking goal from Rufer and Kosta. Very good.
But Ishige is in and out.
We need Kraev and Old replacing. Marco isn’t there yet, though he did okay.
Cola run his socks off. Appreciated that, but that needs someone around him to create the goals.
Rufer needs a mate or a clone. Wasn’t Retre today and we haven’t been seeing Al Taay.
Chief hasn’t sold me that Piper and Cola are the best subs. Cola did a power of running tho. But AFC, getting that excited over that? We should have made them sweat much more and probably beaten them. Want to shut Corica’s trap so very, very badly.
Evans was fine. He didnt give Rufer a red, kicking the man on the ground after the whistle had gone. Auckland won more of the midfield tussle even after Verstrade was injured, that was the game YoungHeartHM

Gee this stuff about the claimed record attendance is classic Auckland FC. I really hope record-takers are taking it with a massive grain of salt, it would be a shame if this fraudulently went down in the record books. I see A-Leagues official page has already been quick to share it.
Did anyone else think we might've had a penalty in the first half - when Paulsen jumps into Kosta when coming for the ball? I know it was strangely given the other way but we were thinking on a matter of interpretation if there's a foul by Paulsen it's gotta be a penalty.
You know, for once I don't give a gnats balls how we go in the main season provided we make the six and increasingly get our intended game plan going and our key players and subs all fit and gelling.
After that, I want to see us make the GF, knocking out AFC on the way.

Think Rufer wasn’t as bad as everyone is making here. Rufer is trying to play the ball and Toomey is trying to lie on it.
If Rufer actually tried to kick Toomey the boy is out of the game.

The first 2 kicks were definitely the ball. Toomey should've been penalized for handball.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
Haven't seen a replay since I watched the game live, but I'm basically just disappointed in Chiefy's cowardice. We played a back 4 for the vast majority of last season and were defensively sound, and we basically have a full strength squad now but he still persists with the back 5 which makes us impotent going forward.
It looked to me like we switched to a 4 at half time but had Payne in an advanced role which doesn't suit him, he's a right back and shouldn't be played anywhere else. Finally when he went off and we were playing a 4-3-3 properly with 3 midfielders and 3 forwards we looked ok but by that point it was too late.
Not sure why somebody else in this thread was comparing Cola to al-Taay, they play in entirely different positions.
I thought Josh was very poor for the second goal, did a weird star jump a whole second too early and then didnt have his feet planted to react to the header. If he was just standing there on his toes when the ball was headed I think a keeper should be able to keep something like that out.
Despite the loss I'm glad we put one past those smug cods.

Yeah, my mother has a memory like that, but then, she’s well into her nineties. The stat? made it up apparently; it works out to 91 minutes if you add in the ~80 minutes of finals games… which, BTW, would have only been 50 minutes if he hadn’t nodded that ball in behind for Kosta to bundle to Zawada and give YF their best moment of the season. As someone said you can add the key pass for our leveler in the final, winning a red iirc and winning a pen if that’s not already counted.
And the best thing about most of these were that they were clutch contributions which won or saved points. Think the free kick delivery against Victory.
But this season we’re looking at width differently. I think that’s why Al-Taay and Colakovski are mentioned. Last year as a sub Al-Taay might have been played at RB and got forward, delivering from a similar position to that where Van Hattum was operating.
Colacovski is playing as a wide forward, but doing a lot of pressing and defensive running. He doesn’t seem to deliver a lot of crosses and runs at players more. He’s perhaps a bit narrower than last season’s FBs or wingers.
