Kinda long but some of you may enjoy it ...
Friday 5 Oct, Brisbane.
Got to the Caxton just after 4, 3 other Nix fans were there
including SurgeQld who was very pleased to get a couple of YF
shirts from me.
Bit later on 2 old fellas wearing YF shirts came by, but they
didn't talk to us. Then a larger group from Miramar came, so
altogether we were about 12.
The_Pink_Devils turned up with the banners.
Roar supporters were meeting across the road at Kitty's.
4 of us went across to say hello. They had an awesome atmosphere in
the beer garden.
Only myself and another guy knew the chants from previous
games, but we tried to get the otehr two up to speed.
We started up with
O Wellington
is -
"Full of sheep" came the Roar back at us.
Oops ...
They had a great song for Danny Tiatto, something about letting him
shag their wives.
We came back with a new one for us - the Exponents 'Don't ever
Say Goodbye (Even Tho' I'm Blue)'
'we're gonna score some goals, and we'll win the game, and we'll
win the game, and we'll win the game'
That was great cos they didn't know it; they were looking
confused!
A few of them knew who we were, cos we got 'You're just a
suburb of Auckland', to which our response could only be
'We're not Auckland anymore'.
Then we hit them with 'You couldn't score in a brothel', which
shut them up briefly. But really, they were all over us!
Chatted to a few of them, nice bunch of people, told 'em to
come over to Wellington for the December game.
I met my rellies, so I didn't get to walk down with the crowd.
The stadium was huge, with a great atmosphere.
I found the guys at the away end, but I have to advise Phoenix
fans DO NOT TRAVEL TO BRISBANE COS THE COPS ARE W**KERS.
They were constantly hassling us Feverites for no reason at
all.
First there was one of our lads who was quite cut, but wasn't
causing any harm. They gave him a load of grief over nothing.
Then they made us take the YF banners off the fence.
So we put them over the seats behind us, which nobody was
sitting in.
Then they said, no, you can't put them on the seats.
So we held them up.
We chanted 'Same old aussies, always cheating' at them.
I would've loved to have said 'Who Are Ya' or
'You don't know what you're doing' but those cops have guns
and I didn't want to be chucked out!
Then they told us to sit down, cos we were blocking people
behind us. Bulls**t, there was nobody behind us. So we told them
they should try talking to the hundreds of Roar fans who were
standing instead of the dozen of us.
Obviously they had nothing better to do than hassle us.
It really put a downer on our game.
I'd like to know whether it was just cos we were Kiwis, or do
all away supporters at Brisbane get this kind of treatment?
Although there was only about the same crowd size as a game at
Westpac stadium (poor turnout for a city three times the
size!), the crowd were spread all around the stadium, it it still
looked reasonably full.
It was a bit tough getting chants started at our end. There
were a few Kiwis there, but most weren't into it.
Great singing from Pink Devils though.
We couldn't hear the Den (Roar fans) from our end, but there
were about twenty Roar fans above us who gave us heaps.
I tried to get a little girl to join in, but she said it was
'boring'.
When the subs were warming up, we got them to give us a
wave.
Another new chant for us was
'We've come all the way from Wellington,
just to see the Phoenix win 2-1'.
The Roar keeper's name was Reddy, so we had fun asking 'Are
you really Reddy?' and other things.
Disappointing result of course ...
I was disappointed that the Phoenix didn't come over to thank
us afterwards. I know it wasn't a win, but some of us came a long
way, and it would have been good for the team to acknowledge
us.
I tend to forget to take photos, so there aren't many - but I
will upload some to the yellow fever website soon.
