Sorry if this question has been covered before, but thinking about it at the game yesterday, who would make your team?

Picking a keeper would probably be the hardest part, and would Lochhead make it just for the lack of another prominent LB?

The eternal question in these threads: does Fred count?
Permalink Permalink

I think you need to define the rules a bit better.
Is it: current form and ability? (players like Kosta would be there, aloisi
        wouldn't).
Their peak form playing for the phoenix? (Kosta wouldn't make it,
       bertos would)
The best season of play from one player per position?
The best team we could make if we took any player at their peak?

The best team we could make if we took any player at their peak. Eg Kosta will probably make it despite doing nothing for us

Under this criteria, mine would be...

Vukovic
Muscat- Durante-McKain-Lochhead
Johnson-Elliott-Fred
Ifill-Smeltz-Coveny

That's leaving out Elrich (who played Premier League), but I just can't bring myself to put him in.

It'd be a different team if it was based solely on Phoenix performances.  The whole midfield would change for starters.

I really think you can only pick on Phoenix performance IMO. Otherwise you get the ridiculous result above (including Elrich!)

Vukovich
Siggy-Durante-McKain-Lochhead
Manny-Felipe-Brown (Midfield was hard other than Manny!)

Based on form while at the Nix;

               Vukovich
Manny Durante McKain Lochhead
                  Aloisi
    Rojas        ???         Bertos
                 Ifill
                     Smeltz

?? = just couldn't come up with a name, that would fit a "best 11", to partner Ross.

Would probably move Manny to DM and then RB is a lottery.

Special mention of Caceras, Dadi, SigmUnd, Filipe and a host of GKs (Moss, Paston and Reedy) who, on their day, are all very good.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Id go:
               Vukovich
Manny McKain Durante Lochhead
                  Aloisi
           Felipe     Fred
Ifill             Smeltz          Rojas

Fred's inclusion is a bit dodgy, but perhaps sanchez can take that spot instead..
Funny how our backline hasnt really changed -bar McKain.

Surprised no-one's picked Reddy as the starting keeper, I though he was easily our best performed keeper who played a critical role in us getting to within one game of the Grand Final.

On the back of talk of players at their peak, i was looking at a few players careers to date and came across this gem featuring a certain S. Smeltz from his AFC Wimbledon days:

http://www.afcwimbledon.co.uk/players.php?squad=37&Psection_id=3&Psub_section_id=3&player_id=700&position=Forward

Look at that hair. Look at that f**king hair!! What in gods name was he thinking?

Three for me, and two for them.

If you go with Phoenix form then surely you can't pick Fred.

Gotta be a toss up between Reddy and Vukovic. Both were absolutely fantastic for us.

The back four picks itself pretty easy. No competition for Lochhead is frustrating as I feel he doesn't deserve his spot despite being our only ever leftback. Karl Dodd was better performing than Jade North, but when Ben SigmUnd can't make his way in to the team then surely they can't either. Troy Hearfield was a thought for right back but Manny Muscat has played better than him in that position so ruled him out.

Midfield is very difficult. Felipe went well for us, Rojas was clearly so class. But I feel wrong putting Tim Brown and Leo Bertos in the side. In the past they have been good for us, but right now they are two of our biggest underperformers. Dani Sanchez doesn't come close and Ross Aloisi was never that good for us. Daniel would be the next in line while Adrian Caceres was actually quite good.

Ifill + Smeltz = class. Eugene Dadi was a short highlight.

                 Reddy

Muscat - McKain - Durante - Lochhead

       Bertos - Brown - Felipe - Rojas

               Ifill - Smeltz

Ok, do it on phoenix form, probably the better idea. I'd be tempted to chuck Caceres in ahead of Bertos

Has to be done this way, otherwise Adelaide would have Romario in their best XI and Newcastle would have Jardel when both were very poor for both teams.

              Vuckovic
Hearfield McKain Durante Lochhead
           Muscat Lia/Aloisi
Ifill          Sanchez       Rojas
               Smeltz

Subs:
Reddy
Felipe
Greenacre
Lia/Aloisi/SigmUnd

Muscat was our player of the season last year in midfield so picked him there and Troy was ok at RB during our two best seasons so happy to have him there, not much choice otherwise. Hard to choose between Aloisi and Lia for me, Lia has been key to our midfield in the last few seasons, in switching play and receiving the ball off our defenders.

If we had a front three of rojas, ifill & smeltz, I would be so stoked.

Throw a guy like sanchez or felipe in behind and what a side.

Just think we have never had any strength in our fullbacks, which is a shame because I think Ricki would like to be able to push them forward a lot more. if we had guys like rose/cassio then we would be quite a danger. I personally cant think of a whole lot of strong RBs in the history of the A-league, although there are bound to have been quality guys there

SigmUnd McKain Durante Lochhead
        Muscat Aloisi
Ifill    [Sanchez/Brown] Rojas

Redddy
Greenacre
Lia
Daniel
Bertos

The fact the we can't decide on a number 10/need to put Sanchez in there sums up the Phoenix's problems really. And that our full back positions haven't been well filled. This basically equals complete reliance on our wide players, who have been good on occasion.
Rojas Smeltz Ifill would be a lethal combination.
Bertos Greenacre Ward just doesn't really work.

That being said, until the Adelaide game, Lochead had looked pretty decent this season.

            Rojas    Brown  Leo (season 1)

     Lochead    McKain     Dura    Siggy
                           Vukovic

Bench:

Three things I will add:

1) I only have Lochhead there cause he's pretty much the only one who ever played LB for us!
2) I picked Leo for how he play for us in season 1
3) Picked Siggy at RB as I think Manny is our best DM and he's only been playing there consistently this season. Had I not picked Siggy, Manny would have gone RB and Lia CM

Suprised no one has opted for McKain in midfield, he was good for us there, it gives us a proper fullback (Instead of Siggy) and then it's not Brown anchoring the midfield, where he is unable to do the one thing he's been good at, scoring goals.

              Vukovic

        Durante   SigmUnd
Muscat                      Lochhead
