if anyone has any issues with it, I have highlighted the problem

"The selection panel comprised the Phoenix's first captain and current television commentator Ross Aloisi, former All Whites Steve Sumner and David Chote, The Dominion Post's Fred Woodcock, radio commentator Jason Pine, while Yellow Fever's David Cross provided a fan's perspective"

My comments to Fred were that I was probably basing it on what he did when he was at Melbourne, but he was so superb there let's think he did that for us.

oh right - so we include Covs for when he was good + Aloisis and Mully. Oh and  let's count George for when he played for Brazil

My first though was 'Greenacre!?'. Then I realised we have had hardly any strikers at the club, so if you want to play two up front, it's a necessary evil.

Still think George could have made it for his 'fox in the box' routine though.

I just don't know affective the team would be with Tim Brown in a DM role. He has been given the freedom, this season especially, to make runs into the box because Vince and/or Manny are behind him in more defence focused positions.

So playing him so deep, or giving him the responsibility to be the more defensive of the two midfielders will take away what he has been doing so well this season and getting into the box to score goals.

And why 442? Greenie is not bad, but not a stand out for the 'Nix yet. Should have settled on a formation that can incorporate the best players.

I did think about that, but then decided I just needed to name 4 midfielders and there was no stipulation on it being a side that I would play.  It was more looking at the individuals than how a team like that would function, that is also why it was the default 442 rather than pick a formation.

The inclusion of Ross Aloisi in the panel means that I must go with his.

Paston, Bertos, Dadi, and Dodd are players from those lists that I could never pick.

Love Aloisi!

I'd probably go:

                       Reddy

Muscat     Durante      McKain    Lochhead

Ifill        Brown        Lia          Daniel

          Greenacre           Smeltz

Love this line-up.  Has a solid spine (Crowther, Old, Elrich) of players to anchor the squad together but not lacking in speed on the wings (Plodder, Mully) and decisiveness in front of goal (everyone's favourite, George).

Moss
Muscat Durante Mckain Lochhead
Bertos Brown Lia Daniel
Ifill Smeltz
(If Hearfield develops as I think he can at right back I think he will slot in here soon, and was close between Lia and Felipe.)

Agree with the team above

Moss for sure, he was miles ahead of Paston during the his two years at the Nix
Muscat is the only player to really cement the right back position except for Hearfield who they do mention is unlucky and in a another season or two could have made it.
Durante because he's always been so solid at the back for us, someone who gives our defence a lot of confidence.
McKain > Sigmund, I still rate McKain more, Siggy was imense for us last year but Mckain is the more complete player.
Lochead, no competition there.
Bertos is in a bit of a slump at the moment but is always a threat on attack and is usually assisting in most of our goals
Brown and Lia are a perfect combination, both strong in the tackle and Brown is even becoming a bit of a goal scorer which is always good to see from the midfield
Daniel has been magic for last three years, good scoring rate and another threat in attack to not only go for the goal himself but to support others
Ifill for me upfront with Smeltz playing off him, we've never really established two strikers so don't undertstand why this had to be 4-4-2 but Ifill is our best player hands down and knows how to find the back of the net.
Smeltz 21 goals in 39 games.

Reddy

It lacked balance..might score few but it would concede as well.  High scoring draw every week rather than current draws..

This is my best Nix XI, though to fit the criteria in the article I will adjust to a 442 (Felipe playing a support striker role ):
                     Moss
Muscat Durante McKain Lochead
             Lia         Aloisi
Ifill                                    Bertos
            Felipe       Smeltz

Your teams are weak.

Best 'Nix XI (by far) would be:

               Lochy
Lochy Lochy Lochy Lochy
Lochy Lochy Lochy Lochy
          Lochy Lochy

While the team would start off in this formation it could easily adopt 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1/4-5-1 if needed.

Mate what are ya? You cant seriously put Lochy in Goal, you could have him on the bench as 2nd keeper behind Moss but not walk on!

When Aloisi was playing well he was the man.  And he was a damn fine leader.  My respect for that guy is right up there.  If he was found guilty of beating up small children I'd still love him.

I agree to most of that, last sentence might change my opinion...just a tad. I would have him as my captain in my best Nix XI
