just wondering, theoretically, if all our squad is fit and able to play, what would our best starting line-up be? ie, i guess tim brown would start being vice-captain, and i would like to see fillipe starting cos of his skill factor, then there's richard johnson...we have lots of options in the midfield who do you guys reckon would be best for the crunch matches?

All of our imports should start to begin with - hopefully at least 3 of the 4 will go good. I'm pretty confident with Daniel and Cleberson, not too sure on George and Campos..

Agreed with Pederson but i rate Moss over Paston.

Paston still has that Barthez eccentric look to me.

Really not too sure about having 3 at the back...

They played 4 at the back yesterday and looked very solid

Everyone seems to want a back 3, back 4 is better. isn't Daniel a Wing back?

maybe in brazil, but not in this league; he's going to rip teams to shreds from a more advanced position

The only weaknesses i could see in our team on sunday was michael ferrante and to a lesser degree steven old. The strikers worked amazingly together and apparentely George is having trouble with his fitness at the moment. (he was never going to play as he sat a few rows ahead of me for the majority of the game) Maybe they will use George as an impact player in the first couple of rounds then blood him into the first team, which will be a tall order if Coveny and Smeltz continue their good form.
My lineup would be:
GK - Paston
DEF - Dodd
DEF- Cleberson
DEF- Lochhead
DCM- Aloisi
CM- Brown
LM- Daniel
RM- Felipe
STR- Coveny
STR- Smeltz

Subs: Moss,O'Dor, Christie, George

johnson would be a quality player to have on the bench he may even leave for an aussie club if he doesnt get much game time im guessing that hell leave for perth at the end of this year and well get bertos

Again, 3 at the back seems stupid.

Daniel needs to get forward as much as possible, why waste him playing him at wing back.
Lochheah had a blinder and looked very comfortable going forward, so why woudln't we use him as a left back.

We can still have 4 at the back and play 2 strikers, look how well it worked yesterday.

which striker would miss out then and who would be the defender to come in

I don't think there is any chance of the above mentioned formations being used, a back three willl get ripped apart. It's pretty hard to call who the starting strikers are at this stage as we haven't seen much of George or Felipe, if Felipe does play as a playmaker then it will most likely be at the expense of one of Smeltz or Coveny. Aloisi and one of Brown and Johnson will start in central midfield, with Daniel as left wing, not sure on right wing though maybe George or Ferrante.

i agree that four at the back is important, it worked extremley well on sunday as it was. regarding the rest of the team.. well i'd like to see some sign of the other newbies to see what i think. but would prefer smeltz to coveney if one had to go.

is it just me or did Daniel have free reign around the field? i moved around alot, finally sticking with the left. not that i minded at all, their midfield didnt ajust to stop him, and our wing backs managed to look after the short fall when he went for a wander.

na mate i wouldnt say that daniel was playing back.i think no-one realises how amazing his positional play is. sure he was back at times but then he went forward well and he defended well. I have no doubt that this guy is going to be bigger than Fred. We have never had anyone in the country who has represented Brazil and on top of that is 27. Apparentely Felipe is just as good, i cant believe how well we are shaping up. this could be massive for New Zealand football.

I'm pretty sure that Daniel didn't play for Brazil, the wikipedia article was a load of rubbish, still looks like a good player though.

Once more, good luck playing three at the back. If they do that they'll get eaten

I am in Brazil but from what I've been reading it seems Ricki has 2 good structures depending on his objectives in each game:
1) 4-3-1-2 - this diamond formation in the midifield is being used a lot by the Brazilian national team and lots of teams in the Brazilian championship:
4 - the 4 who played this weekend
3 - RDefM TIM BROWN + CDM ALOISI + LDM JEREMY
1 - AM DANIEL
2 - COVENY + SMELTZ

2) classic 4-4-2
4- the 4 who played vs Sydney
2 - TIM BROWN + ALOISI
2 - RM FELIPE + LM DANIEL
2- COVENY + SMELTZ

These are 2 strong options for the team.

I hope he's another Fred - we've signed him for 2 years!

I think that the idea is at the moment that we will play 4 at the back, and 2 up front  (or at least 1 up front and 1 just in behind - in the hole).

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Daniel did play for Brazil, it was confirmed in an article, from the man himself and numerous respected football database. Sure it was one cap as a sub but a cap is a cap.

I think the fomratino we played against Sydney looked good, but just because we hit form. I would like to see a more midfield attacking role from Daniel hitting wings as he did during Sydney and see him take on some players.

I think Ricki just needs some time to let things settle before he find the formation to suite the team.

Well, pre-season IS the time to experiment. I wouldn't stop changing stuff (if needed) just because we trounced Sydney.
