Who are the best NZ under 20s?
I understand Phoenix needs to have three in their 23 man
squad.
My picks would be:
Chris James by a country mile.
Ben Sigmund second.
Costa Barbarouses third.
Then (in no particular order) Jermey Brockie, Michael White,
Sam Jenkins, Jason Hayne, Stephen Old. Who else?
Given Phoenix wont get James, which three will Herbert opt
for?

Nembo says he'd have Brockie, Spoonley and Edgington for his U20s

I might be persuaded to replace Brockie with Costa
Siggy is well over 20 lads... he was part of the 1997 U-17 squad to
Egypt so my bet is he's 25 or 26. Stephen Old is also about
22 and I suspect jason Hayne is as well.
If you want an Auckland U-20 back who can also play in front of the back 4 Michael Boxall would be worth a look. Here is the squad in Auckland for the qualifiers in January:
Goalkeepers: Jacob Spoonley (East Coast Bays), Nick Tarrant (Team Wellington).
Defenders: Sam Peters (Team Wellington), Tim Schaeffers (Waikato FC), Phil Edginton (Hawkes Bay United), Jack Pelter (Canterbury United), Ian Hogg (Hawkes Bay United), Kieran Purcell (Evansville University/USA).
Midfielders: Michael Boxall (Auckland City Academy), Cole Peverley (Auckland City Academy), Dan Keat (Dartmouth University/USA), Michael Cunningham (Otago United), Michael White (New Zealand Knights), Chris James (Fulham FC), Roddy Brown (Universidad de Chile), Craig Henderson (Dartmouth University/USA), Sam Jenkins (Hawkes Bay United), Nick Roydhouse (YoungHeart Manawatu).
Forwards: Leo Shin (Hawkes Bay United), Jeremy Brockie (Sydney United), Kane Vincent (Auckland Grammar School), Joel Wakelin (Hawkes Bay United).
Not in the squad but worth considering:
Costa
George
Michael White

Good to see thw Knights have still got players!
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet
Michael White is listed mate.
Peoples Republik of Aucklandia
Forwards are all pretty dismall, with the exception of Jeremy
Thanks for that correction, Hard News. Yes, Sigmund was in NZ
A, not NZ U20s recently; my mistake.

Brockie is over rated, has anyone ever seen him beat a man will
skill or guile?
White can take on players, which is something not many kiwi's
can, although i suspect Brockie will be picked on hie boy wonder
rep of two years back.
Costa is looking class and is scoring goals by the truck load
at youth levels.
We have seen Costa play since he was a young fella and
for pure striking ability and instinct not many (if
any) can compare to Costa - not only is he a good lad, level
headed from a good natured family, but the boy can
play!!! In terms of footy, he's composed, has a mature
outlook and is not afraid to have a go - whereas other
strikers will wait for the perfect pass, bounce etc before
having a lash!
He is definetly on his way to higher honours and
deserves a shot with the NIX!

Totally agree with TouchMe.
Costa over Brockie anyday, Brockie is overrated.
Brockie is terrible, Come on!!!!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE! How many games
did terry butcher start him in!!!!!!! last season terrys hands were
tied! he had no one else!
I think calling Brockie terrible is a tad harsh. The phoenix is
exactly what the lad needs he has lost his confidence over the last
12 months ever since he moved to Sydney which was a mistake.
Hopefully with Rickis help he can regain the confidence he had
whilst at the Knights.
On other young kiwi players I watched the Under 17s play in Auckland and Jacob Matthews is the only other player that impressed me other than Costa obviously. Also I saw most of the Under 20 qualifying tournament and players who the nix should be looking at will be Spoonley in goal, Boxall at the back and James and Jenkins pretty much were there big threats going forward. Also Keats and Peverly were good in the midfield but I know Keats is at Uni in the states but Peverly would be worth a look.

Dan Keat and Craig Henderson plus of course Chris James, were the pick of the under-20s for mine.
