postives:
Ifill and Greenacre > Smeltz and Coveny
Vinny Lia is fit
no G**/Kwaz
Costa is a year older and wiser
Marco 'watch this space' Rojas
Diego could be our missing attacking midfielder
negatives:
Mossy gone

It is definitly better, but i still wish we had Moss he was a huge part of our success (if you can call it success) from last season. The fact we have gained some great signings is encouraging though considering if we can have one successful season we should be able to potentially get some even better signings looking at playing for the Phoenix

Other big positive is we start the season with a settled and very solid back 4.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Add one more proven striker and Greenacr, Ifill, and *TBC* >>> Smeltz +Coveny& Draper
Feel like Diego is a decent signing but his starting spot might won't be certain. neither will Brown.
Hearfield is like Costa too, another year older and proving he can really play.
Crowther can't be expected to be as good as Moss - yet.

Moss was a big loss and our positives are the new strikers to fill the space of the outgoing ones.

Greenacre and ifill have both performed at a level overseas therefore this softens the blow of losing smeltz. could even argue that we are stronger for this as no one has mentioned that smeltz was unwanted over there but these two signings have a decent record in england.. hoppefully will perform in the a-league

Not 100% sure on Ifill because of pretty damming reports about his work ethic/fitness but I like the look of Greenacre. Even if Ifill is is a flop I think the likes of Costa could do a job up there.
I think that we need to settle on a back 4 and stop chopping and changing McKain especially. Our defence was pretty shaky because of this.
We have to hope Paston doesn't get injured too because Crowther looks far from ready.
Apart from that, there is a lot to be positive about. I don't think the Phoenix have had this kind of pace before with Rojas, Costa, Leo, Hearfield .. Was exciting when Rojas came on - has all the skills. Not sure if he can use those skills to produce anything useful yet but hopefully he'll get there without his flair being coached out of him.

Feel that Coveny isn't even a loss.
That's harsh on Covs who has been a great servant of NZ football. He reached the end of his career with the Nix and I think it's great he had the chance to do that.
Don't forget players read this forum, and care what you say.
Smithy2009-07-22 11:01:06Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

No doubt, he is/was a Quality footballer, I've seen him play many a times and impressed me but last season for the Nix he didn't do much scored a goal or two. But felt he didn't do much for us but i'm pleased he finished he career at his home.

I thought he always tried hard for us and set up a few for Smeltz (including quite a few penalties) but obviously never reached previous form.

Coveny was rubbish for the Phoenix, it doesn't matter what he achieved previously.
I am not sure I'd say we're stronger than last season. Smeltz will take a lot of replacing, and even though we have signed two new players who should be good, they are unproven here, while Moss has not been replaced. Diego might offer something.

Still feel like we need another 'true' striker. Ifill isn't that guy.

Of course it matters what he achieved previously. If he was some nobody donkey (George) then being blunt is fine, but Covs has done enough over his career to get more respect from us than "he's not even a loss".
Have a bit of perspective ffs.
Sure he never set the world alight for the Nix but he has been a great player, and should get r.e.s.p.e.c.t for that.

Agreed, even though he left in a bit of a bad way (complaining about not being played etc.)

Was talking about the NIX in general but he would have been brilliant for Experience and to help guide Costa and Draper in there progress

Like the phoenix this year. They are saying that Ifill wants to be a Out and Out Striker. BUt he played as winger because of the coach. Greenacre, Ifill Costa. Like that up front.
Only problem is the memberships are so much down on last season. Hope they can pick that up

I think if weather is good it'll be surprising how quickly crowds grow.

5k could be optimistic... I dunno. It depends how much work we are doing to build up that first kit. It will be our first home game, our first look at the kit for most fans, first look at our brand new signings. Advertise it right and we could get a decent crowd. And play decent attractive footy and the crowds will raise.
A big win would be amazing.
I'm spreading the buzz with all the people I can.
A few handouts with player details etc in the first few matches will help casual fans become more familiar and interested

A few good early results will bump up crowds and the Phoenix have the added advantage that nobody really expects them to do much this season so they have nothing to lose. The pressure will be on Gold Coast, Melbourne ,Sydney etc because they are expected to do well. matrix2009-07-22 12:48:17

I just feel like most of Wellington grew apathetic towards the Nix after the first season. It's disappointing but it's reality.

a lot could ride on that 1st result against Newcastle, we really need to win that one!
If we loose or even draw that game, no doubt the media will start writing off the nix yet again.. a solid win would draw a decent crowd for the 1st home game i think
Permalink

The people I've spoken to (casual attenders not season ticket holders) have been pretty excited about it actually. Things like the back page of today's Dom will definitely help. There may just be a lot of people curious to come along and check out the new players, particularly when they see they've played for Chrystal Palace, against Man Utd etc.

I don't think that was the case - sure the novelty factor had worn off in season 2 but we had a good crowd for the pre-season cup final. Problem was we then shot ourselves in the foot by dishing up crap in the first few games - by the time the team started to deliver we had burnt off quite a few fans.
I think many will have had their interest rekindled by the Ifill signing (with one more good signing to come) and will come back if we get some good early results and word goes out the "entertaining" Nix are back.
Beat Newcastle first game up, or at least draw scoring a couple of goals, and I'm picking 7k - 8k for the home opener against Perth. A few wins over the following weeks and we'll grow from there.

I wish i could be as confident as other people. Just anyone i talk to my age (Uni Students) and there doesn't seem to be any interest in the Nix at all. Maybe all my friends are just Dickheads. Lets hope the Kiddy market is still there

Yeah, I've been trying to get people I know to get season passes or at the least come to some games. Most said no to the membership, instead saying they'll go to 'most' or 'some' games. And then there are a few dickheads who claim the Phoenix are sh*t. Which disappoints me.

So have I, I'm organising a group who havent been to the phoenix, or went in season one, to come to the opening game to see a brand new phoenix outfit?

lol. Yip your friends are dickheads. Haha jokes.
But I've got same sorta scenario. Mates from back at college will come with me, but getting my uni mates is pretty hard. Its hard to get people to try something new.
Thats why I've had a lot of luck with my younger siblings and cousins. all aged like 8 - 15. And they are getting in to it. I'm trying to get them all to bring a mate to that first game and everyones really keen.
Hopefully more people can do this, because if we grow the fanbase from that age, the clubs just gonna get stronger and stronger. So hoping for that Perth thrashing we all want

yeah thats soo true, I find older people around me dont like the phoenix as much as my age group. but Im sure when atleast my aged people (16-17) start going to uni, there will be more support.
I know atleast three of us here are planning on going to wellington because of the phoenix. it seperates wellington fro the other universitys
