Big Changes For Next Season's A-League

News from the FFA:

"The A-League will start later next season - and most likely finish later, too, with its finals series going head-to-head with the early rounds of the AFL and NRL home-and-away seasons.

And, if Football Federation Australia can get agreement from the A-League clubs and the state league bodies, the elite Australian competition will be spiced up with the introduction of a cup competition involving not just A-League sides but the most successful teams from competitions like the Victorian Premier League."

Will NZ club sides get a chance to compete? And who'll pick up the tab?

More likely NZFC champions from the previous season - but putting a NZ team in is going to thow up more Asia v Oceania problems :(

Situation 1 - South Melbourne (for example) lose to the Nix. Their fans whine for eternity about how they lost to a team that, in their opinion (which may have been forumlated AFTER losing), shouldn't be eligible on account of not being Australian. The media joins in. Bad press for FFA.

Situation 2 - South Coast Wolves top the NSWPL qualifying, pull off a surprising run of underdog victories to win the FFA Cup. South Coast get the celebrate victory over the A-League. Then, the Phoenix - who were excluded from the FFA Cup - win the A-League double. South Coast fans forever feel like an asterix is next to their name on the FFA Cup trophy because the Phoenix were not involved in the competition.

surely the ffa has made some guarantee of number of games phoenix will have in a season...should the league be cut and the nix not be included in a cup/knockout comp would there not be grounds to sue for breach of contract

Why would they have that kind of guarantee when the amount of games are changing every season?

Nix will be in the cup for sure, no reason why they wouldn't be. They're an Australian club (as far as competing in the a-league goes). Would be extremely foolish for the FFA to exclude us.

I understood the Nix were not in the Youth League because FFA only wanted to subsidise Australian youth development.

But they would have let us join if we'd paid all our own expenses. Which would have cost the club a bundle. Yes?

Didn't we offer to pay for it and even base ourselves in Canberra? And we still weren't allowed in?

And the FFA Cup is about joining 'old soccer' and 'new football' - not much to do with us, really, just like them wanting only to subsidize Aussie youth development.

Just wont be surprised if we weren't allowed in. The costs to fly, say, a Perth state team over here may be too much for the FFA.

I suspect the FFA is damned if it does, and damned if it doesn't include the Phoenix in this new deal.

Supposedly, there are some very wealthy backers lining up to bid for the Nix if Terry were to fall over, financially.
Maybe the best long term plan for the club's survival is to try and get some of that other money onboard to cover things like a youth team. Spread the dollar load, and get a stronger foothold in the Aussie market.

The bigger and more successful we are, the harder it will be for FFA to keep us out of new ventures.

Andy Harper saying on Fox Sports FC that the Nix shouldn't be allowed to play in the FFA Cup because we should be trying to build NZ football with a NZFA Cup or some bs.

Simon Hill said the opposite and that Cardiff/Swansea do similar in England Cup comps without any issue

Why not have an anzac cup?

Because neither federation has a lot of money to throw around and getting semi-pro teams to fly from, say, Christchurch to Perth isn't that cost effectivevaleo2010-10-19 23:32:29

Perhaps someone should tell Andy about the Chatham Cup?

Tbf to Andy though, the Chatham Cup doesn't include the top end of NZF, with the NZFC sides or the Phoenix. I would suggest a pre- or post-season competition with these sides, but we almost have that already with the Yoof side playing the NZFC sides this season.

Why Not? A big enough transtasman sponsor.. open to all clubs in Australia and NZ.

You think finding a sponsor is that easy?

Can't see this ever going beyond the Phoenix being an A-league side. Having said that, there's a lot of opinion against the Phoenix being in this cup competition, so let's worry about that first.

Not easy at all 2nd Best.
But I can imagine its ability to stand alone from those other existing, already sponsored competitions as an iconic trophy played for by all teams in Australia and NZ would provide a magnificent platform for a major sponsor looking to establish a presence or build market share in Australasia.

If the amount of fixtures in the league are cut AND we are excluded from any cup competition, it would be quite a disaster IMO. The future would not look great in that instance.

I don't get the argument about the likes of South Melbourne complaining about losing because we apparently shouldn't be eligible? How is that different from us beating any team in the A-League?

Like the idea of a cup competition.

Not sure about having the finals clash with the opening rounds of the AFL/NRL though. A chance that the A-League Finals could get lost in the start of season hype. Finals would even be better clashing with the middle of those seasons than the start IMO.
