I don't think so.  I think it's just the highlights show with the analysis and things.  Something any donkey editor can do they will retain.

Just spoke to SKY TV CEO John Fellet and although some of these shows will go because they don't rate we are working on some other opportunities with them to promote football in this country. For those who cancel their subscriptions it really defeats the purpose and also you will not be able to watch any of our game or other A League games.

Actually, not only should SKY be keeping World of Football   they should also have an NZ football equivalent of rugby's "Grassroots" programme,(Toyota sponsored it)
i.e. local, regional, agegroup football stories (not just game footage) any interesting Kiwi football related stories, amcam footage and pics etc packaged in half hour format with major sponsor ...something like Freds "Order of the Phoenix".. only Nationwide.
just a thought SKY.

That sounds like an excellent suggestion, watch it get ignored. If only it happened.

Maybe Sky could go down the Rugby channel path and have a football channel, which if you want you can pay extra for (~$2/week). should hopefully cover and provide and incentive for shows like WOF.

Could have more replays/leagues/games/discussion and opinion.

The idea of watching the A-League games is fine (we can all do that at 4 Kings and spend our $60/month supporting them), but how can they say these programmes don't rate when there is little marketing promoting such football programmes to watch? Or as they are now doing, scrapping them altogether.

Promoting football, and removing the only local football show in Pay TV seem at complete odds to each other.

As someone else mentioned, Sky TV dedicates so much to replaying over and over every possible incarnation of Rugby, even to the stretch of replaying 'classic' matches on the Rugby Channel, to fill up all those empty timeslots when they could be covering and promoting local football and A-League matches properly.

Sky needs to get their head around the fact the Wellington Phoenix, and the Yellow Fever are not the Kings or the Knights. The Phoenix are a team with a solid support base, and they should be encouraging people to watch the coverage on their SkyTV. It makes sense for them to get new subscribers from new supporter bases ... than marginalising their PayTV back to 3 Rugby Channels and a Highlights channel.

This is extremely close-minded approach from SkyTV, reminds me of Telecom and their "oh but our broadband is fast enough" approach. Bury their head in the sand and don't admit they're wrong, just keep on pushing the same old tired crap to people wanting something better.

I agree with Ard Righ.

Football supporters are second-class citizens on Sky TV.  It's hard to plan to watch these shows because they shunt the times all over the place.  And if there's rugby on then football can end up anywhere or anywhen.

They don't get it.  Here is football with the biggest registered player base of any sport in this country and rather than recognise that and protect their financial baseline, they go out of their way to piss us off.

I only joined Sky because it was the only way to watch football consistently.  Then they moved rugby onto Sky and football watchers became the forgotten people again.  One day it's going to bite them.  God it would be good if it was today.

Here's an idea. Ring up SKY, ask them for a spare channel to put specialist footie shows on like...WOF. They will say, sure, no problem, here you are, take channel # 66 pay us x amount per month for it and its all yours. All you them have to do is hire a studio, some cameramen, a set, buy some content, and most importantly go find some advertisers to help you pay for all that (or try the government but good luck there) and hey presto, thousands and thousands of viewers will tune in. Or maybe they won't. It will probably last two months before the money runs out but at least we will know exactly how pay TV operations work and make money.

Yeah, you'd think they were running a business or something.

E-mail/call/fax - do whatever you can. They're not as belligerent as some of you want to believe, and they will take heed if enough of you force them to. But this "THEY'RE OUT TO SHAFT FOOTBALL!" rhetoric is rubbish.

get you coverage from Tesltra- cable if you live in the wellington/christchurch regions. you can get the sports channels, plus some extras, and sky dont get as much money from you while you get a better service - no more rain fade :)

I hear what you are saying BBT, I don't think a dedicated football channel could happen immediately, but I think it COULD happen..it will all come down to NZ Football presenting the right business case, attracting the right sponsors who have recognised football does have a following/player base larger than rugby in NZ.... plus, I believe, consistent, creditable, improviing performances when playing internationallly from ALL our representative teams (well done U17/ U20 women!) plus the Phoenix, Waitakere...whomever!!
Compare the following rugby has in this country, with much made of ...
strong traditions, generations of "heartland" participation,
The AB's consistently at or near the top of world rankings,
key national, international sponsorships (Addidas,Ford,Steinlager etc),
strong NZRFU and tv rights revenue
... it is no surprise rugby gets the tv coverage it does, particularly since it went professional.Considering the relatively minor place rugby has on the world sports scene, rugby is a money-making machine in this country!

Bringing this back to topic though.. A programme like World of Football, is an essential, a cornerstone of New Zealand football viewing, imo.If it is replaced, something comprehensive on football matters but particularly on the regional and national scene please SKY!

Sky TV is a business, pure and simple. And, as with any business, if not enough people are using one of their products, they have every right to scrap it and try something else. The conspiracy theorists who say that Sky wants to hurt football for whatever reason are deluded. It's economics, nothing else.
So, based on this, if enough people do pledge to watch the programmes that are facing the chop, then they will listen. I've sent an email to them, politely worded but firmly stating that I enjoy the programmes (despite Katsanos presenting some of them) would like to see the programmes stay. I figured that ranting and raving like a lunatic would only succeed in leading the recipient quickly in the direction of his "delete" button.

I completely understand the reasoning as to why you would not want us to cancel our subscriptions over this matter, as the Nix get a very very very small slice of my tv bucks. But on the other-hand $60, on top of my regular season ticket pass (yes I WILL include that cost in this) is quite an ask.

I find rugby extremely dull - but understand why people enjoy it so I don't have a go at people liking it, I understand why Sky choose to push it so much, but it doesn't interest me at all so I don't watch it.

I hate tennis. Watching a yellow ball go backwards and foward's at speed generally sends me into a blissful slumber.

I just don't understand the popularity of TELEVISED golf - nor why it is on TV so often. I am never surprised when I turn on my sky sports and find that golf is on ALL FOUR CHANNELS at the same time. Different events though so thats OK according to some poor sod at the Sky helpdesk.

I used to like Forumla 1, until some little midget with glasses and a lot of money decided to muck around with the rules too often.

I also used to like Cricket. Thats another story.

In fact, the ONLY thing I watch on Sky sports is football. Sometimes I watch the world's strongest man minute on ESPN, but it is generally football. If they are going to take away local football and keep replaying the same EPL games over and over and over again then seriously; what's the point.

I'd rather spend my $60 on cheese.

As for your list of sports you don't like, I'm right alongside you. I'll watch football all day if I can, and baseball when I can catch it but anything else can take a long walk off a short pier.

In fact, I don't even classify golf as a sport. It's a passtime, a hobby, like pottery or collecting books of matches. And to play it you have to dress like a nerd. I'd rather spend my time eating cheese.

Someone told me that along with the A-league hilites and WOF being dropped, the A-league games that the Phoenix aren't featuring in are not being shown.  Is that for real? Hope not.

I have to say that I'm not too concerned that WOF is going, it was amateur tv at its worst.  I mean even worse than TAB Sports Cafe.  Those epic product placement close-ups and bumbling presenters.  The only positive stuff was the NZFC, however that was reduced to around a minute or two so now big loss.

This doesnt help those who watch "World of Football" or the A League highlights etc but you dont need Sky to watch football anymore. I havent had Sky for 4 months now but have watched every Phoenix game, all the ENglish and Scottish football I want as well as such gems as Forrest Green v Cambridge United.
If you have broadband then websites such as Iraqgoals.com and Justin.tv can provide you with a huge selection of all the major leagues and games.

Sometimes the feed is rubbish, sometimes its got a non english commentary but sometimes you get high quality feeds. I plug my laptop in to my lcd tv and the picture is more than adequate and Im saving myself 70 bucks a month. Every now and then the quality isd good enough that I can go full screen on a 42 inch tv. On top of that justin.tv has a huge selection of movies and tv shows streamed on its site. Last night I watched "The day the earth stood still" the latest Keanau Reeves movie (utter rubbish). I suspect Sky and others will have a few battles coming up as more of the online streaming becomes popular and the quality improves. $600 or $700 a year saving is not to be sniffed at. I have had Sky since the early 90's but apart from the fact that online to picture quality isnt always that great I can no longer see them as needed or relevant for me.

Mature Wensleydale is nice, I had some a few years back but it is too pricey here. Same for Double Gloucester. In fact, there is an absolutely delicious Double Gloucester with Stilton that is heavenly, but costs about a months mortgage payments.

A football channel would not be that difficult for Sky.

Have a channel, say $10 a month. Play what they have now (premier league, spanish league, a-league etc, but with a little more games + replays. They could also play "classic matches" like the Euro Cup Final - good on you Ole)

This channel now covers/funds extra costs for a program like WOF, or plonking a cameraman down for the NZFC.

Now we have a Football channel, sky can show more crap on the normal sports plus make a little more money for these extra sports.

And I can't see where the market for Grassroots Rugby is, the majority of Rugby fans can't honostly watch that properly. Maybe some kids on a Saturday, but since more kids play football, then they'd must rather watch some nice NZFC football.Michael2008-12-15 22:08:36

You could include South American football and Scottish football, both of which Sky used to show about 5 years ago. In fact, there'd be more choices of football for Sky to show on a dedicated channel than there is Rugby on the rugby channel.

If they thought about it, the Aussies might even want it.

And a channel showing just games isn't a huge dent into their budgets. I doubt the rights are that big in a country of 4mil. And they're still getting money from subscriptions.

I also wonder, if because they have rights to the premier league, and only showing the major games, that this is a waste of money, cause the rest come under the one payment. ( Not showing all the games they have rights for = waste of money )Michael2008-12-17 23:22:30
