What can the Fever do to boost home game attendence to last years levels?

If the Phoenix make a final they should have a parade.
As for the fevr, I reckon we could do with a few flags and banners etc maybe even a trumpet or drums.

Banner comp at the next game was in the last pandemic. Get into it.

I'm hoping to make the next two home games so that is +1.

How about a fever bus bringing fans to the ground. Hire a yellow one, call it something like the 'contagion contraption', plaster it with YF banners, flags, start it in Palmy stopping at various pre-defined locations to pick up feverites who chant like crazy and start the party all the way to the ground. You could also press gang likely suspects (people who look down on their luck, dragging their feet etc) and rescue them from from a life of boredom with an injection of the fever.
As a public transport initiative someone may be able to get funding for it even?
If it becomes really popular you could start it up here in Cambridge so I could get down there - though after a day travelling those on it would be in a state worse than contagion, they'd be critical...or blind drunk with the fever.

How about up to 2 free kids (under 12) with an adult. I know some folks under 12 have season tickets (Junior news, Football Mum's sprogs etc) but that's just bad luck. Make it a one off and hope for good weather. Kids will love it and drag there parents down again the next week cause they don't care about money. Maybe get some free scarves and beanies and a few players (not playing) to hand them out.
Its no longer a problem.

Well, the only reason I ever go to football games is because of amazing banners, so I agree with the suggestion.

Hand out flyers round the streets, spread the word I guess.

to be fair just talking about his with a mate who reckons we should have kids under ten years get in free. Bigger crowd, would drag in more adults paying, next generation of supporters, more $ spent at ROF and on merchandise.
I have always brsuhed off suggestions about people getting in free, but this is starting to make sense.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

The problem with bringing children free is the timing of the games
5pm on a Sunday is an aweful time for under 10s as it is dinner time and also they would be getting to bed late before school the next day. I suggest better game times next season and the crowd should increase more

That's interesting you say that because I believe the move to Sunday games was because the time slot was seen as MORE family friendly.

Have spoken to a number people who attended games last season who havnt been this year for that very reason that 5pm sunday is not a good time.Really cant understand why the club wanted so many games on a sunday as they also disadvantage out of town fans as well.Maybe crowds might improve if we actually saw some effective marketing by the club, because what we have seen so far has been very poor.

I completely agree. 7:30 ish on a friday or saturday would bring in much bigger crowds.Even the away games are on at bad times.

i know we've been down this road- but curtain raisers
Rugby league does it well, where match days have a youth team comp beforehand. during RL grandfinals they play two curtain raisers: youth teams (jersey flegg) and the reserve grade- it makes the day a festival of footie
who should play beforehand?
team wgtn? chatam cup? yellow fever invitational? Culture kicks Final?
who cares, just throw em in the ring.
look at the double headers in the U17 WWC-great value- 2 games, 2 results, different styles- it makes it an occasion

As to the marketing point I think it needs to improve but it also needs to be better. Sports people talk about building the brand, I really don't see the Phoenix doing that. The WRFU were proactive this year, the team were out in the community, they had a lion crate driving round town all match week with accompanying lion noises. Non players were in the concourse on match days to take photos with fans. The team had a profile. The Nix do not have one in the general community. If they are getting out to schools and to hospitals people need to know about it.
So marketing would be my suggestion but better more targeted marketing

The way the games are at the moment its like once a month your child will go to bed or have dinner later than usual....no big deal
give your kids a later lunch or buy them hot chips or a pie at the stadium....is it really such a big deal!the kids free thing is a good idea but is it really going to bring in that many more people.....
kids have to have an adult bring them in so its adults we need to target.....
buy and adult ticket get another adult free
or maybe another adult half price
I'm not sure how to get more people along....I know many here and I do the same talk up the Phoenix but you can't make people come unless they want to.....

And I think that maybe that is part of it, we need to realise that a lot of people do not WANT to come out and watch what they percieve to be a poor team playing in a poor league. So the battle is as much about perception.
So now i have two thoughts
1) Build the brand
2) Change perception

I think the marketing could be improved. I remember last year after every game all the bus stops in the city would have the next game advertised already. This week I saw a bus stop still advertising for the Roar game.

1] Freebies, like those badges they gave away at the rugby. (Or those Pocket Radio's).
2] Buy one ticket, get one free.
3] Prematch entertainment - perhaps a proper junior fixture, not the little leaguers. How about a Ladies game? They've shown they play better footie than the A League.
4] Marketing seems to be the common fault. I would point out though that places like NewstalkZB give huge amount of air time to Nix adverts & Wellington beds do their bit too.
5] Best dressed fan of the day - every game - and give away a decent prize.
6] We've had fine weather for three games now and even decent form leading up to the last one, yet the crowd numbers have stayed static. Perhaps a survey in the Dompost with the random prize draw for respondants, to find out from those who don't come on this site??
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

1+

Most people sitting around at home, (plonked in front of the tv, or in the garden if it's nice), on a Sunday won't be arsed to come into town to watch a game from a team that does not win all the time. However if they are already in town and have had a few beers then you might see more of them show up.
Have it on a friday/sat night and where possible and no fr*ggin lions match the day before. Put on free buses from Courtney, all in nix colours, with music. Lets have some banners, people/chicks going into bars etc to try and get some more punters in.
Reduce the price of the beer.
Advertise more. Get the team on the news more. How many people who are not in the Fever zone know the starting line up? - very few, in fact how many people outside of the fever zone could name any of the players?
We have had very few of the publicity events going on like we did last season. why not?
Adverts on the telly. You have millions of adverts of people selling sheep dip or advertsing DIY and tire stores surely Tony etc can get some cash together? The phoenix have no media image at present that the average person who has never been to a match can Identify with.
wine and dine the press - there are still jurnos and tv stations that just don't get the Phoenix-time to get them pissed up. If anything the Phoenix have been less in the media than last year.
Invite a famous celeb to come and be part of the YF and have a camera follow him/her around.
There's a few ideas I have more if you wanna give me a job. I won't work for less than $50000 mind and that's taking a pay cut.

next year have different game times (5pm on a sunday hasnt worked & is hopeless for away supporters (fans out of wellington wanting to travel tosuppot the nix)
get the support of schools & clubs going along - have a club day at the ground - different club each week???
The team were showing good form (2 wins & a draw) before last game against qld but the crowd didnt improve from previous (I know a long weekedn)) - more publicity?

The rest of these are good ideas - but a) If people don't know / arent coming to the phoenix, I dont think they're going to come for the curtain raiser, and b) Ladies better than A-League? You're having a laugh.
Sadly enough, theres is still a perception that the nix are rubbish amongst non football fans - even just after our recent run of forms of 2 wins and a draw. Not sure what can be done about that, except for winning. Lots.

Tony already answered this in another thread. they didn't choose the times, the A-league did, so they went with the family angle because that was the best one.
There are night games coming, so make sure you support those!
I think you have to bring people along, and then the experience has to be good enough to get them to go again. Took 4 non-yfcrazy people along to one of the first two games, but they weren't that good. I loved it, but in terms of convincing people who wouldn't have gone otherwise not that great.
The team has to play cohesive attacking football. They have to look the goods on the park. We scored goals last year, and had exciting Brazillians, and exciting new club shine. This year we went defensive to win, but haven't. Gao, Leo and Daniel (and perhaps Costa!) are all exciting players people come to see, but there just hasn't been cohesive understanding across the park enough. Lochead too. That's kind of why, despite Siggie's brilliant Hadrian act, I'd like to see Muscat still in the frame at right back. A player like Berger can light up the attacking third, with width. No point playing for a stalemate right?
Bring along folks and when they get there more deserved chants of "we're playing gorgeous football"!
If non-footie people come and it is crap they will just have their perceptions reinforced.

Among other things, including those mentioned above.
Athough it's high-risk and expensive, a genuine marquee player. Someone non-football fans would pay to see.
Sustained good form.

Agree with all except last one. We shouldn't have to rely on other teams failing for us to succeed (in terms of people through the gate). Should be about what we do thats good and not what other people/teams do thats bad.Gangsta!2008-11-02 17:47:02
