Booze sponsorship

Many considerations...

  • Will (most likely) be bad for sports organisations
  • Will probably be good for small alcohol producers over larger organisations
  • Will likely be better for citizen health in general

On balance, not a bad thing in my estimation.

As a bar owner, it will probably be better for you as well.

As a person involved in a sports club, not so much.

They said the same thing when we lost tobacco sponsorship. Other industries filled the gap.

The government stepped in first and partially filled the gap with "Smokefree" or some such agency

Can't see it happening to be honest. The alcohol lobby is too strong and the negative effects of alcohol aren't as straightforward as the negative effects of tobacco. The government hasn't even reached a point where it will put health warnings on alcohol packaging and this seems like it would be a more restrictive move than that.

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

Yes that was true for taking away tobacco sponsorship, but I don't believe the gap will be completely filled if take away alcohol sponsorship. Some will be replaced, some won't. If it all can be filled then some evidence for that would be good rather than just a vague hope that others will sponsor to the same level.

Not great for overall public health if sport participation is harmed and realistically how much will alcohol sales reduce from this? I would assume very little.

What next? The banning of fast food sponsorship because someone will say it contributes to our country's obesity problem?

Ha I was actually going to say I feel like fast food sponsorship is worse than booze ones.  But I'm sure once booze is in plain grey packets locked behind the desk, they will move on to KFC.
