I think that with our key NZ players - we should place importance on picking those who have played at the A-League level (or above) regularly. No point signing players that other teams don't want, like Steven Old, who can't make the step up. Saying that, if the likes of Old do sign, we need to have the right players around them to complement them. No point having him next to the sluggish Hay for example.

Brent fisher would be a good player to target as he has experience in sweden as would many of the nz players in the mls like oughton boyens and lochead.

Just a thought has anybody actually seen Stephen Old play?? I watched him play 4 games for newcastle last year and he was terrible, he was subbed twice after starting at centre half, lets face it, how many centrebacks do you see subbed?? he doesnt have the x factor for this league, he doesnt show good techniquee, he's not the quickest player around and he is very weak, lets face it, can you see Stephen Old taming the likes of Archie Thompson etc?

I have been whinging about the lack of Kiwis in previous teams but I think our priority should be to win games, I mean people are talking about having a squad of 15 kwis, with these NZFC players there arent actually that many who could make the step up. I would rather 10 quality kiwis and some half decent imports and aussie than a team mad eup of kiwi hacks like Danny Hay, Raf de gregorio and Shane Smeltz.

Disagree about Bunce - he's a good solid centre back. I'd sign him in a heart beat

One of the Knights main faults was the lack of NZ players... I notice the number being mentioned in conjunction with the Phoenix steadily dropping.  We've gone from 15 to 12  to 10 and now 8 I see mentioned in todays Dom Post.

So, we take out the four import spots and we're left with 11 Australians who aren't good enough to make any other A-League squad, despite the fact that there are 7 Australian sides scouting Australian players. 

I'm trying to stay positive, but I am starting to be very concerned about the possible recruiting direction of the Phoenix.  It feels awfully familiar.

To me we are in serious danger of assembling exactly that... another Knights outfit.

yip, bouckenooghe would be a good signing.  it puzzles me how he plays at left wing back for the all whites when he is so very right footed.  he also won nz player of the year after his performances at the confed cup in mexico at striker.

I'm gonna come out of my shell and ask a stupid question, but wasn't there another Bouckenhooghe in the All Whites at some point? Like Michael or something? What happened to him?

I dont personally rate the Bouck, he just seems another very average player, and I'd rther sign an average youngster with potential.

Actually TM, that depends on the coach and the options you have.

At the end of the season when Ricki was coach and Salley was fit, Bunce and Tambouras were playing it our quite nicely.  The difference was that Johnson and Salley were coming back and making themselves options (remembering that they often had no right back option) so it was viable.

If there is no midfield option then hoofing it long becomes your only option.

He has a great name, so I think we should sign him.
