The Nix continue to flex their muscles in the transfer market with the acquisition of Brazilian Daniel Lins Cortes.
The left-sided wing-back -simply known as Daniel - had been targeted by both Adelaide United and the Newcastle Jets. But it was Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert who won the battle for the 27-year-old's signature late last night.
"It's a great coup for the club," Herbert told Sunday News. "It has taken a lot of work but we finally got our man."
Daniel, who had a spell in the Dutch first division with FC Twente, has played most of his professional football in the Brazilian Campeonato, for Juventude and Botafogo. He has also played in Hungary for Videoton FC.
The A-League has a small but significant profile in Brazil thanks to South American talent such as former Melbourne star Fred, Adelaide's Fernando and Newcastle's outgoing Colombian striker Milton Rodriguez.
"I worked my contacts in Australia and South America in getting the deal done and I've watched a lot of DVDs," Herbert said.
"Daniel is the type of player that loves getting forward and putting opponents under pressure. And he's a free-kick specialist.
Meanwhile, Herbert confirmed that talks between the club and his All Whites captain Danny Hay had broken down.
"It would be accurate to say that at this stage it seems unlikely Danny with be with the Nix," Herbert said.
Sunday News understands recently retired All White striker Vaughan Coveny and current international Jeremy Christie will be added to the now 11-strong Nix squad this week.
And at least two more South Americans - both strikers - will be named before the last week of May.
Confirmed signings include Daniel, Australians Steven O'Dor and Vince Lia, Ross Aloisi, Richard Johnson and Michael Ferrante, 17 year old Kiwi phenom Costa Barbarouses and All Whites Mark Paston, Glen Moss, Steven Old and Tim Brown.

Daniel Lins Crtes (born 12th December 1979 in Niteroi, Brazil) is a Brazillian football player, who currently plays for Madureira in the Brazillian Championship. He is a typically flamboyant play-maker, who has been linked with a move to Wellington Phoenix in the Australian A-League.
CareerCrtes began his career as a promising junior at Rio powerhouse, Flamengo. After appearing for the Brazillian U/18 national team over a dozen times, with childhood friend Kaka, a lack of form left him on the international sidelines for two years. He returned in 1999 with Rio club, Madureira, where he became an instant fans' favourite, leading his side to a runners up spot in the Carioca Championship.
The form of Crtes caught the eye of European scouts, and he was soon on his way to the Dutch Eredivise. After twelve goals and a debut appearance off the bench for the Brazillian national team, Crtes landed a big money move to Hungarian Champion, Videoton.
After being convinced to return home to Brazil by Botafogo legend, Jairzinho, Crtes helped the fallen Rio giants regain their status in the Brazillian top-flight. The attack-minded defender was instrumental in his first season back at the club, scoring ten goals, including a memorable hat-trick against local rival Fluminense.
A Brazillian BraveheartA little known fact about Crtes is that his father left the family when Crtes was only ten, leaving Daniel and older brother Joao to support their mother and four sisters. Joao was one of the many unfortunate victims of the Favellas gang violence, cruelly gunned down in the street. The tragedy left Daniel more determed to get his family out of the Favellas and saw football as his greatest opportunity to achieve this.
Great signing, looking forward to seeing him on the pitch in the Phoenix colours.
