He's had 1 good game, let's not get too carried away!

He was chopped from the A-League and Halifax for a reason. Every now and then he can show some brilliance (like this morning) but on the whole, do you really want him?

I'm not convinced either way to be honest as I haven't seen him that often, but his history must count for something?

That is true.  I think Ricky should sign.  Played very well against Wales.  Nearlty ahd a hat-trick if it was not for the post.

Great result.

He played well, no doubt about it, but I am not convinced he is up to this level.

it was a very good game and Shane Smeltz should have got his hatrick, but at least we got the draw

I dont think we should get ahead of ourselfs but we should certainly sign Smeltz before a league1/2 club do. Is kiwi of course so wouldnt take up a foreigner shot and last night showed what his capable of.

Shane took both his goals very well. The first was a nice strike and the second was from a deft ball put through by Tim Brown that was expertly headed in. I thought of the four goals our two were very well executed. Bellers equaliser was simple and even our own Plodder would have buried that if given the opportunity. It was only because two defenders stood static and rather than put any pressure on they backed off and we let him have free space and from that position you'd have to be a right donkey to miss. Bellers second goal was deflected. Had we moved in sooner it could have been deflected out of harms way, or with no deflection Paston may have had plenty of sight of the ball to cover or at least get a hand on it.
Plenty of encourangement to be gained from a NZ perspective. Other than Plodder (a cardboard cutout might have impressed more), I felt everyone was pretty committed to the cause.

So he scored 2 goals against the 75th ranked team. We play in the league of a higher ranked country, Aussie are 42nd.
I think I heard in the commentary he had scored 2 goals for his club this season. We need better than that to be competive.

i've been impressed by smeltz on several occasions.  he finished very well against chile a wee while back and has looked a decent player at times.  today he was excellent and showed what he is apable of.

the fact that he struggled playing for a club well down the english league structure worries me as does his form on the american tour recently.  i think because the whole team struggled there, and strikers always struggle in a poor team, i am willing to overlook that.

i say sign him if he's available.  i reckon he'll have a few options now.

Damn post is always getting in the way of my hat-tricks as well. Sometimes the corner flag even gets in the way as well.

Listening to Ricki on the radio, sounds like he and Smeltz have been talking about Phoenix - so I guess there is a chance that we will see him signing.

The guy scored 2 goals in 31 appearances in the conference last season, you guys are morons if you want him. The Phoenix need someone with a proven goal scoring record if they are going to be better than the Knights, I don't think any NZer is up to it.

For Accy Stan, "Plodder" is none other than the incredibly fast speedster, commonly known as Jeremy Christie. He's been nicknamed Plodder for years.

i'll admit i was quite against having Smeltz start in the Wales game, and while he proved he has some skill (2 goals in an international fixture is respectable), if the stats herman has given are correct, NO THANKYOU, let him go to a league 2 club

The Town website says he had 13 starts plus 18 as a sub. At AFC Wimbeldon he had 15 goals in 12 games. Maybe its a confidence thing and he obviously flourished under Rikki.

Halifax have been poo this year, and yeah he hasn't scored for them, but then not many people have.

Interesting to hear that before he'd even got into the showers a league to scout knocked on the door and asked for his number.

Should maybe be given a trial... i am concerned about his ability with ball at feet, didn't seem that good at taking it past players at times... but hey, atleast his finished his oppotunities.

Smeltz had a good game against Wales however whether this is a habringer of things to come remains to be seen.  Personally I have not been impressed with his achievements over the longer term however Rikki is the one with the eye for underperforming talent so I'm happy to leave the decision to him.

Ricki is a good coach and if your good enough to score against a decent team (not tahiti etc) your good enough for the A-League.
He will play good under Ricki and Coveny will help him.

Even with a dodgy defence with the knights he still gave tham a system to be very compepetive and he shows he is a good coach with sub par players.

Just wondering how many strikers do we need?

We have 3 strickers already Brownlie, Coveny & Costa.

Ricki said he would like to sign Brockie as our 2nd U20 player. And now he is targeting Smeltz & a Brazillian Striker.

Do we need 6 strikers really?

I'd like Smeltz to sign for The Nix and claim that the snse of togetherness that Ricki Herbert has bought to proceedings was a deciding factor.
Then I could use the headline "Smeltz Likes Team Spirit".

I was at the game. To be honest, I know this is going to sound funny. But Smeltz was out of his league. Off the ball, he was sluggish. On the ball he was lacking pace and flair. He was getting great service from the like of Chris James(Number 8), but as soon as he received the ball in the Welsh side of half way, he would get tangled up. lose the ball, or run with it a bit before realising he had better pass it back to Chris James before he does lose the ball.

Maybe it looked different on TV. But I can see why Halifax released him.

Before you hang me out to dry. It is damn obvious his finishing was absolutely superb! I am not taking that away from him. If Ricki knows how to use him for his eye for goal then great. But  I can't see Smeltz taking the A-league by storm.

I think the best option, and I hope it happens. He should go to a league 2 or better. It is going to be better to have as many players in the english leagues. He will be training in the professional evriornment and will leave his space in the phoenix to another Kiwi. The more we get into England the better.

Overall, I just felt he lacked a bit of pace and flair.

My best player of the day(other than the two centre backs) was Chris James. On and off the ball, he didn't stop running. he was like a work horse. He was controlling the whole flow of the NZ game. He likes to pass and move. He didnt panic on the ball and he helped build the kiwis confidence with his short passing game. I sure hope he breaks into the Premiership soon with Fulham. How did Chris James(No.8) look on tv?

If we build it, they will come...

I totally agree with you Chris mate.  Smeltz is better off left in the UK and as for James, I thought he had a stormer, played well in behind Smeltz and at times in the second half he held the mid field together and wasn't afraid to take players on and was creating most of our offensive movement.  It would be great to see him teamed up with Elliot in the midfield.
