Seems you still have friends in high places if BB statements is anything to go bye..

Buckley said his organisation were in discussions with the Asian Football Confederation and the sport's world governing body FIFA about the continued participation in the A-League of the competition's only New Zealand-based club Wellington Phoenix.

"We need to work through some approval processes with both organisations, but all of that is in hand and we committed that to the club," Buckley said.

I've always found Bin Hammam's stance on the 'nix to be extremely petty.  What is his objection to the phoenix's involvement?  I've never understood whether it's a lack of understanding o the history of the game in the region or whether he actually has an issue with the OFC.  Surely it doesn't harm the AFC in any way (not getting into the ACL debate)

Midfielder, I'd damn well expect us to be supported by the FFA.  They gave us a licence and I expect them to stand behind us in dealings with the AFC just as any other club in the league would expect that

Possibly Wellington being in the AFC is one step closer to Oceania being in asia and he doesn't want that?

Don't want to start a rumour and i hope what i say is wrong but is the reason only one team is coming into the comp next year is because they are also dropping a team as well? Could that be bad for us?

Two teams next year Clarke - Melbourne Snarf and Westies FC.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I thought Westies had to wait an extra year?, if what you say is right then that throws what I said out the window.clark007e2009-09-30 15:48:33

FFA have said 11 teams next season with one team having a bye. Only adding one team does not necessarily mean dropping one.

this article is from the A League website. there are currently 10 teams in the league. Melbourne Heart are joining next year, and Westies are joining the year after. this equals 12 team.
i would suggest this comment is good news for the Phoenix, unless the FFA are about to announce another new club.. which is extremely unlikely

Why would have another Melbourne team or Sydney team? These places really aren't viable, the league struggles to get good crowds at the moment and teams have just been created to compete with each other.

I agree William - as far as crowds and popularity go, Canberra would be the best bet. It's just a shame that it's not currently viable.

I know one of the guys on the board of the franchise there and he thinks that an A-League side there would be similarly supported to what the Phoenix were in Season One. Apparently there is a big football community there that is hanging out for a team.

True although I reckon if there were two wellington teams I'd follow them both if for no other reason than extra football to watch.

I have also understand that Canberra is well supported. I hope they will have the name of "Canberra Athletic" rather than "Canberra United" because there is enough of "United" name in the A League as it is and it sounds boring. There is a fan group called "Capital Punishment" so they should be big fan based for the club.

That is a class name. Poos on Yellow Fever, frankly.

on the contrary, Mr Lemon.. Yellow Fever can be highly contagious when one is exposed to it and equally permanently life-changing, when it comes down to it...

..and then there's the tropical variant.......

The Capital Punishment basketball team of the CBL might have compained if proto-YF had nicked their name as well

Don't believe Canberra have that issue, which is good because it really is an excellent name.

Both those cities are huge in area and population and can sustain 2 teams. Sydney for example [i used to live there] if you lived out west [towards Penrith] it would take you up to 3 hours to get to and from a game at the SFS, that must put a lot of punters off going to every game every week. Plonk another club out in Parramatta and you'll attract a new fan base I reckon.
