Though the club hasn't officiall released anything, apparent absence from training for the last few weeks would suggest so. But who knows.

Who are we referring to? John Mitchell, Jon McKain or Jian Chen (for those of us not with the inside word)

Obscure reference alert -

Maybe Chen doesn't suit the type of football he wanted.

Maybe it was done to free up some cash flow?

Is my casual obsevation correct that Brazilian and Asian footballers do not thrive in Wellington Phoenix and yet theior compatriots thrive BIG time in Australian clubs? Is it that we need sledgers like Siggy to play the pastoral chooping physical style that suits the rigby mad NZ?

Is it totally untrue that wellinton Phoenix doens't have cashflow problems? Truth will come out in Jan trabsfer window.

Well if they had cashflow problems then why would they fight for a 10 year licence. Why would they fight to have the services of Fred.

I predicted that this would be a waste when he was signed based on past Chinese efforts at the Kingz/Knights/Phoenix and sure enough I've been proved right.

I wish we would stop signing Chinese players as they have all shown time and again that they are not up to the level.  Should be looking at Koreans and Japanese instead.

At risk of making a sweeping generalisation, Chinese players tend to not travel or adapt well, and a lot of them over here spend too much time in KTVs.

They have totally different attitudes and approaches to Korean and Japanese players (for example), lumping Asian players together is like lumping Europeans together. Would you generalise about Italians and Scandanavians as one group?

JJ Price would be a good recruit. Ex DOnny Rovers, then Millwall. Might still be there. Big Welsh centre forward with a great attitude, good in the air and turns his hand to battling in the midfield when needed.

It seems that WP needs rugby type build players who can bulldoze opposition out of the way with their size, might and speed but skills is not part of it. Long ball, hard rugby and pastoral tackles seem to the way here in NZ. Doubt that Koreans and Japanese players or even other south american and african players can thrive in WP. Btw, Carceras is only an "impact player" but all those other players are duds. Yeah right. Could it be the coaching structure and players culture within WP that prevent these players from displaying their craft?

WTF dude?

Korean and Japanese players generally don't come here, because the money isn't as good as they can get at home. Can't think of any Japanese players. Koreans- Seo, Byun and Seong.

and of course Ki in the centre at Auckland City.

Surely we could've got someone that might've served a purpose though?

We had 6 months of pre season to find a handful of players to add to the squad.

Also, genuine question, would the fine have cost us more or less than the wages we've wasted on him?

You could be right....
There are quite a few Asian/sth Americans/East Europeans doing OK in the A-league. melbourne bought in those two guys from Thailand who are doing OK.

Maybe it is the coach who struggles with these guys. We certainly have not got the best out of any of them except maybe Daniel. It is interesting that the focus preseason was going to ENGLAND to sign a couple of strikers. Compared to many of the other A-league sides we are probably the most Anglo.
Nothing wrong with that....the coach will pick the players whom he thinks will do the job. But there is quite a pool of talent that could be utilised from Asia/sth America.

Ali Abbas?

I think it is more to do with limited resources to scout. In season one we were in a hurry hence we signed a couple of dud Brazilians after watching DVDs. And the club does not have the resources to scout all over South and Central America plus Asia or Africa or wherever. English football is something that Herbert has more knowledge about and can therefore go to more easily.

I don't think we would have wasted much on wages for Jiang, we did sign him after a trip to Tianjin, where there were discussions on cooperation, also Jiang had had discipline issues at Tianjin so maybe Tianjin basically paid his way here. Just speculating.

You have to remember that clubs deal a lot with agents and contacts at various clubs, so while they were in England, they would have had a lot of phone calls around other parts before they got down to the final list of players for face-to-face talks.

I would be surprised if they bypassed Europe or South America to concentrate solely on England. They would have had all their options open to start with.

Hopefully they'll bring in another genuine striker to play up front with Greenacre, and let Ifill fall back to playmaker role.

As far as I can tell we stop looking for player after we signed Chen.  I'm sure loaning him was done for financial reason.  That is, because he was loaned, part of his wages were subsidied by the other club.  Therefore allowing salary cap funds to be allocated elsewhere.

IIRC we were on the verge of signing another English striker before he pulled out last minute.

I think i heard somewhere that the fine is continual until you sign the 20th player, so hard to tell which option would have been better.
