Why is it that Wellingtonians can't accept the stadium is the Cake Tin?
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
We can.

It's the conucil that can't cos it screws up their naming rights sponsorship.

Guess Auckland has a "quantity over quality" policy going, huh?

I like the name the cake tin actually but I just call it the stadium as ballane said.

Heaps of quality in Auckland Ali Williams
Sione Faumuina
Misi Taulalpapa
The list is endless
And it is not called the Cake Tin out of jealousy
But because that is waht is looks like
And you can't call it the Stadium
There is more than one
Also can't call it Westpac Stadium
There is a Westpac Stadium in every city and town
You are stuck with the Cake Tin

If you go to Wellington and say you are going to the stadium everyone knows what one you mean.

Three blokes I've never heard of does not constitute an 'endless' list of quality in my book!

what about the big circular cooking utensil located near the mass of water known as the harbour?
it just doesn't work as well thats why.

Actually I think you're yet to make one.

Anyway, moving on.

Cake Tin is a fine nick-name. How can a city who's parliament building is called the Beehive get sensitive about silly nick-names?

North Harbour is a better football stadium than the Phoenix's new home, sh*t location but a better football ground.

Its called the Stadium for short. Dont get all tichy cousin. When people ask if your going to watch the canes play you usually say, yeah im going to the stadium. NOT im going to the Cake Tin.
almost 19 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
I've heard some people refer to it as the tin, but most (myself included) call it the stadium.  It's just easier when then's only 1 in town

I often refer to it as "The Tin", but I also call it "The Stadium".  I think "The Cake Tin" or "The Tin" is a great nickname.  It gives the stadium a unique identity.

Strongly disagree. North Harbour stadium is a great venue for watching footy. Just a shame that we couldn't get more than 10,000 fans there.

I went to the U17 football world cup final there when it was filled to capacity and the atmosphere was awesome.

Is the Cake Tin's playing surface not rectangular? Why would it not be a good venue for watching football?

One of the main issues with us moving from Olympic Park to Telstra Dome is that the Dome was built for AFL and, very occasionally, cricket- it doesn't lend itself all that well to rectangular based games, so much so that the normally best/corporate seats in the house, on the wing, are actually the furtherest away from the action, due to the oval shape of the ground. Cop that, fat-cats!!

Does the Cake Tin or Wind Tunnel or whatever you're calling it suffer from a similar problem?

I went to Subiaco Oval in Perth in 2000 for the NSL semi between Glory and Wollongong. Because of the Oval shape the fans were a long way from the game, but it didn't matter. There were 40,000 plus fans at the game and it was electric. Hope the Phoenix fans can do the same.

N.B. NSL semi went to golden goal and young Perth player (can't remember his name) scored the winner. The fans went ballistic. I was a Glory fan for one night.

Watched that year's Grand Final on telly- it remains one of the most mesmorizing finals, no make that games, I've ever seen!! Both teams deserved to win, Perth were stiff, but that's footy...

but my question remains- is the ground at Welly good for viewing soccer? Back in my day you had games at the Basin, Newtown Park and I think that was it...I don't think Athletic Park ever played football, but I could be wrong.

There was the All White v England game at Athletic Park in '91 or '92 ? which was brilliant despite the terrible weather

Kiwi pie, never been to "the stadium" but i would assume that as they play cricket there, the  distance between the football pitch and certain parts of the seating areas would be considerable. I have been to north harbour and you are fairly close to the pitch. Good low ceiling in bloc5 which creates a good atmosphere for singing. sanday2007-05-09 14:14:46

My guess is that it would have been '92, as that was the year I went on my OE. As an old Berhampore boy I was more than a little freaked out when I came back and Athletic Park was gone!

Hammer Head the young player that scored the winner was Ivan Ergic.

Short answer - there is some distance from stand to pitch as it doubles as a cricket ground on occasion.

Loved Athletic Park. Would have been great for the Phoenix, with the Millard Stand right on the touchline.
Remember watching All Whites v Israel, Australia v Taipei in Olympic qualifiers back in '88 (when they were full internationals)and the England match in early 90's - magic

Agreed, I was in the press box for a game last season and the view was terrible.  Fosters box was directly next door and when they actually bothered to watch the match you could see them squinting.

I hate football being played on Oval venues - the sooner you get a few more rectangular venues down here the better for the game.

In the meantime, Telstra Dome should quit being so cheap and get those lower seats pulled in for the football.

Tell me boys, are there any rectangular stadiums in Wellington?

We're a city of under 400,000 people Benjamin.

We have one Stadium and the Basin Reserve which is the home of cricket.  Both Oval.

After that it's Parks, of which a couple have stands that hold around a thousand people.

400k is not bad.  Great potential to build there.  Stoke is a lot smaller and has two decent sized rectangles (Stoke City and Port Vale), so no reason not to aim high.

Before I leave the region, I hope to see a dozen 30k plus stadiums in Australia/New Zealand.  If we can manage that my work (spiritual rather than professional) will be done.

Get Newtown Park done up to a 25-30K seater!

Nickname it "The Zoo" and boom, watch the thing market itself...

haha, the zoo. I dont think the monkeys would be too happy with that idea, after every chants we would hae to put up with their squeals.

Agree North harbour stadium is a good one but it is very underuesd and they never get big crowds.
