I'm wondering how the fever are going to handle dealings with Stadium staff. I remember watchign the all whites V dunfirmline there a few years back and being asked by a steward to sit down because I had been standing up for about 5 minutes. When I inquired as to why I needed to sit I was told that the people behind me shudl be given the opportunity to see the game. So naturally I looked behind to see that the nearest spectators were about 10 rows back!!

rediculous.  . .   - Warning to all Wellington Fans; the stadium stewards havn't got a clue when it comes to football, and have no idea how we like to enjoy our sport. It'a also likely that all our singing will be drowned out by mindless sound effects and cheesey songs from the Stadium PA.

We're going to have to somewhow liaise with the ground management wherever we play, in order to ensure that we get a 'football' atmoshpere.

quite right phil.  they could be a bit over zealous, but i think years of facilitating the wellington IRB sevens has probably helped raise the tolerance levels.

nonetheless we need to make sure that a proper football atmosphere can be generated.  this will become a hot topic come game time and you can be assured that, as a supporters group, we'll be looking for an effective way to get this point accross.

We need to make sure people leading the fanbase talk to the Stadium management.

I had to get the AW's to smuggle in the Bloc 5 banner for that Dunfermline game and it took a sit-in,  and then intervention from Chris Turner to stop the leader of Bloc 5 being chucked out of the stadium in one Kingz visit.

Totally agree HN - we'll be talking to the powers that be closer to the time to ensure that there is a good football atmosphere provided.

The likes of the sevens has hopefully meant that the stadium bullies will have calmed down a bit

It's frightening to think the Sevens are our friend, but you're right.

you guys will certainly have to educate them abit. if they know that people wanting to stand will be in a certain area and there arnt any problems they should relax abit. maybe liaseing with the club may make it easier so they can do some negotiations with the stadium for you,

Good point, we might want to look at a hard-core cop somewhere at the ground. Personally I'm hoping they opt for the Basin Reserve, becasue I really don't think they're every gonna get more that 5000 along regularly to the games. That number of people  (even duoble hhat number) at the Cake Tin would be a disaster, due to its size. But even 5000 at the Basin feels pretty good.

However I'm not sure the A-League rules would allow the Basin, cos it might not be "developed" enough. Still I think one of the major flaws of the previous NZ A-League setups is their need to play at an over sized ground. That's a sure fire way of killing the atmosphere (besides losing of course!).

If they start off at the Basin, then maybe they can build on good atmosphere and move down the road later, provided we can establish a strong and loyal base of fans who want to attend the games. Better to play in a slightly smaller ground and get close to selling out . . . looks good on TV too. . . . And the Basin is probably going to be cheaper to use that the stadium. Bigger isn't always better.

Couldn't agree more, while the Stadium is awesome, it's pretty average when it's half full, let along 1/7 full (based on 5000 attending a 35000 stadium). The yellow seats stick out like dogs balls. Whereas the Basin with seating capacity of about 12k is perfect for the Phoenix...

However as always logic won't really come in to it, as they will be more concerned with selling corporate boxes, & looking after season ticket holders of the Stadium then with the atmosphere.

The Basin has a number of issues:

1.  No lights.  To meet the optimum Aus TV times we're likely to need to play some evening games.
2.  The cricket wickets.  It would be a nightmare playing week in week out with a full block in the middle of the pitch
3. The cricket season.  The basin is in use for 30+ days a summer for matches, and the time needed for wicket prep. means you couldn't play there within 5 or so days of a match.
4. It won't come close to meeting the standards laid out in the FFA participation agreement.

Besides, 5k ?  Stretch lads... every person you meet, ask them if they are getting a season ticket, and if they are attending the opening League game.  Once you have bullied them in to a yes, write down the name on a list and the week tickets go on sale remind them until they do it...

The single most important thing about the Stadium is that it must be General Admission, not allocated seating...

Basin definitely has issues - as HN pointed out - lack of lights, cricket season, but also parking, access for the Hutt Valley football nuts and atmosphere (not well laid out for footy and will be hard to generate buzz or hear anybody's brilliant chants in raging november northerly). Stadium will be too big most of time - but has gone ok with 10,000 - 12,000 at Kingz games and ODIs.

60,000 at least for Grand Final - so we better make sure Eden Park is available on that date. I'm booking my flights and accomodation now ...

The Basin Reserve is a terrible ground for watching football at, and I say that from experience. Just forget about it.

The atmosphere simply won't be any better there than the stadium, even with small crowds. The playing area at the Basin is actually much bigger than the stadium which means the crowd is miles from the pitch (and the design of the ground prohibits the use of temporary seating). The lack of proper stands also makes the ground much more open making it harder to generate a real atmosphere inside. The only good thing about it is it's so easy to jump the fence!

As Hard News points out talking about crowds of 5k is lame anyway. Wellington should definitely be looking at regular crowds of 10-15k and higher for this. That will be fine at the Stadium with room for growth. If it's general admission and the crowd's not too spread out it'll be great. An atmosphere is what you make it, don't blame the stadium.

I was surprised to hear the Basin even being mentioned as a possible option because it just isn't up to it and would show a complete lack of ambition by Wellington. I'd be embarassed if we ended up there.

Yeah I know, wishful thinking to a degree i guess. I just hate seeing that Stadium less than about 2/3 rds full. For the sports i really follow, League, cricket and football that always seems to be the case in the Stadium.

And the Basin has such a wonderful atmosphere, even half full.

I have no doubts the Stadium will be the home always.

Although i do wish the FFA had given us a home game first up, but i saw a draw on this forum(?) showing us away to the Roar first up.

A poor first up result away to the Roar will reduce the crowd numbers, although that also gives Herbert a great chance, because a good away result will encourage bigger numbers to the first home game.

It could have been worse Dougie... I mean, the Roar have got Fwankie in charge which should help our chances no end.

tx 100% right - lets not tread gently - Basin rubbish for football. Cant be contemplated. Stadium only option. EOS

My mate spouted this line as well: "the Basin....it'll have great atmosphere blah blah blah."  I mean, I luv the Basin as well - for cricket.  But for football - YUK!!!!  STADIUM ONLY OPTION.

Lads - I hope you're right, but regular crowds of 10-15k?

Do you really think so? I reckon there'll be around 15k for the first game and it will dwindle back losing around 20% each week until it will settle around the 5-6k mark.

But, sh*t  i would love it if you;re proved correct...

The Basin is ruled out simply because of no lights, therefore no Aussie TV coverage.

I agree the Caketin can look empty when half full.  But why not block off Aisles 1-18, so that the TV coverage shows a reasonably full stadium?  Just slap some walls to your left when you enter the stadium.  Save on catering, serving warm piss, lighting expenses ets...
