Can the Phoenix survive wthout Daniel and Fellipe?

It was a pretty disappointing game tonight.... Just wondering what people think about the fact that, can the Phoenix win without Daniel and Fellipe? Didnt have Daniel for todays game and Fellipe was sub b4 half time... we had only 1 shot at goal the entire game and didnt create any chances... No Fellipe , No Daniel...No victory?

No, but if they weren't there at all, we'd have someone differant who we could win with (rather than just the subs)

Ya know?

Yes the Phoenix can survive, if the Nix have to rely on two players it is going to be a long summer.

Just look at the young guys for the Roar they kicked some Nix butt last night.

Lets give others a chance, If Daniell is going to be booked all the time and Filipe injured( just remember Hammies dont get better over night)

My other concern is why did the Medicos leave Fillipe on so long after he strained his hamstring those things only get worse they may have added weeks to his recovery.

Here's the thing. Although Daniel and Felipe are both huge players for us Ricki didn't do a particularily good job in choosing his replacements. He opted to bring in Ferrante, stuck him in the middle (although I think he was supposed to be on the right side) while Smeltz was some kind of auxilliary left wing. None of that was ever going to work and we ended up playing like a shapeless  blob. No width going forward and easy for them to exploit us down the sides.

Without Daniel down the left Ricki should have tried bringing in someone like Lia down the left, at least a natural winger would provide us with the width even if he is right footed. Also, we do have Elrich waiting in the wings, he should give us another creative outlet that we desperately need going down the right hand side because teams are quickly cluing in to the fact that we do little going forward on that side while Christie is an obvious weak link in defense (little pace/defensive experience).

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going - now the real work is jsut starting, and Ricki & his team will be concentrating on consolidation. 2-1 away is definitely not the end of the world. It just brings it home to us all, that this is going to be a really exciting summer - the birds have only just learnt to fly, wait until the Phoenix gathers momentum, and begins to SOAR with ease! Bring it on.

smeltz did have one superb run down the left (from which george got called offside), but agreed he doesn't look comfortable out wide

elrich should fill in (and probably make the position his own) wide right

tim brown can start in centre mid

and we'll have daniel back next week at wide left

we will miss the spark felipe brings ( he was winning a hell of a lot of free kicks in the last 10 mins he was on)

as someone hinted there's a difference in how ricky will respond to a known Felipe absence as opposed to his options available off the bench

this period will be tough, with 4/5 away games and All Whites absences but we'll be right!!!!!

Hi Tigers - the strength of any organisation is to take the main person out [just for a while] and see how strong/weak that organisation is left in - Phoenix do NOT have this problem, as the SUPPORTERS are the strength of the franchise, without whom we would be KKRRAAPP. Besides Ricki has some vey good lieutenants

Daniel was a huge miss - the team has relied heavily on him so far this season - either with what he does on the ball, or through the space provided by the threat of what he will do...  His defensive cover was missed last niht as well.

Felipe didn't have a particularly good game prior to his injury - and as I said before the game, he seems to play better with Daniel in the side than without him.

Again, the spirit was good - they kept playing right to the end, and that's the sign of a good team, and Smeltz's goal keeps his strike-rate up, which will keep his confidence high.

The biggest problem last night was the loss of Daniel, the second biggest - as has already been said - was the replacements...  Johnson, Brown, Ferrante and Aloisi are not a midfield that inspires one to imagine attacking flair and quality crosses.

Elrich, once he's fit, will add something to the team - have no fear...  Until then, Daniel's back next week and he'll be around for another 6 or 7 games before his next suspension...  :-)

they can win without the likes of felipe an daniel, but even if we have them both on the feild the work in the engine room has to be done for these players to flourish, which was lacking last night anyway. No need to panic the nix have shown over all so far this season they can more than foot it with these other sides ,they will keep picking up results, even if last nights game was below par.

I think what we miss most with Daniel is his work rate.
Every game he is always running around in the midfield. This puts pressure on the opposition We couldn't get into the game yesterday because we were always being closed down. The Roar seemed to be able to move throught the midfeild at will. Without Daniel we don't hassle as much/move the ball into space.

We definitely have a good group of players, so I think we can survive, but of course having Daniel and Felipe on an inspired day always makes the difference..
I think yesterday's defeat will teach us a lot. I.E. That Ferrante needs to feed a bit more the strikers and that , should the Brazilians miss a game or two, we still need to attack and put pressure on the opposition.
Because, yeah that's the truth and it's a staggering revelation, if you do not attack in football, sooner of later you end up conceding goals and that often causes you to loose....

But I think there is still some good to be found in yesterday's performance, and hope the lads will regroup and get a nice win next week!

I don't  mean this to sound rude but I say this quite a fair bit and I kinda almost want to sit with people during a game and point out the obvious. Aloisi and Johnson are not there for attacking flair and to a lesser extent neither is Brown. They are there to win possession and hold the midfield. Daniel, Felipe, Ferrante and Elrich are the attacking midfielders who create. You can't have a midfield full of creaters if there are no engine room guys to win the ball for them.

I think the 2nd goal was more down to us only have 10 players (O'Dor off the park) than the goalkeeper not doing his job..

we have a reasonable squad...i think we can still progress on this season if, god forbid, we lose those two.

will be fun to see the starting formation for next week

2-1 must be the most flattering result ever I should think , based on what I saw.
The Queensland kids looked to be twice as quick as the Fenix. I was impressed with their team, and the speed in which they shut down the opposition. The Fenix's problem was getting the ball forward, and how easily did they score when they finally did get the ball in the box? So that at least offers some consololation. But Im afraid Wellington looked a bit one paced at the back for much of the game, and its to their credit that they only let in 2 goals.

It wasn't so much the lack of the brazilians, though that would have helped... the fact was the nix style of play just gives opposition LEGIONS of room in midfield, and that was apparent when you saw how many of their players had tons of room to thunder ranged shots in on Mossy.  We REALLY need to tighten up our midfield.

On Felipe - I was spewing at the Roar players - in the first 15 minutes they put three sliding tackles in on him and (to my biased eyes) it appeared that they were actually trying to injure him.

Roar almost always committed two players to the tackle when in their own half, it closed up space to pass and move and the nix didn't know how to respond.  This was best shown by the halftime stats where the Roar were 2-0 up, and we hadn't had a single shot at goal.

The Roar had our number, but we're not in trouble yet - this next game with 7 players down is going to be a good test of the depth of our squad, and a chance for those that have seen little game-time so far to come out and shine.

A very fair assessment. Playing 4 - 3 - 3 didn't help though against a team that always goes for it at home. Those two teenagers though made a difference - I wish he hadn't picked them until next week. We're going back there in a few weeks though so a chance to see what lessons were learnt.

On the evidence of Friday's performance, at the moment the answer has to be a definite No.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

whilst we'd all want to see daniel and felipe turn out every week (and any team in the league would miss those two lads), I'm confident Ricky and the lads will have done some thinking about the second half and will do things better in similar situations in weeks to come

I think we would have to adopt a more structured style but i'd back Ricky and the lads to work it out

Daniel has been realy busy this season, but apart from last week not particularly effective due to his habit of giving away the ball, or giving away yellow cards.

Felipe is a bigger loss. We shall see how quickly he recovers. In the meantime som rejigging of the formation may be in order.

Of the 2 I think Daniel is the bigger loss, so pleased he will be back this week.

His work rate on the ball is excellent, and he owns the left side, it really showed up on Friday with the left being hardly used.

I am not sure if we can be successful without the 2 of them, will be interesting to see if Elrich is pushed on to the field now

I agree with that, which is why I said 'at the moment'. I'm sure Friday has given Ricki and the lads some food for thought and they'll make the necessary adjustments

Villageboy said it best - we're gonna HAVE to learn to rely on more than just those two. Especially after Queensland's vile performance - not taking anything away from the scorers, but the intent to injure by those tackling Felipe was blatant, and is something we'll have to deal with all season. Daniel's been the victim of it, by both opposition and referee, and the other night was Felipe's turn. I'm sure some other players will impress once they get some game time. Hopefully the match against the Jets will uncover a few more diamonds in the rough
