Anyone else watching?

How is Joel Griffiths still on the pitch? That has to be a red card - obviously a very generous version of the events from the linesman when he relayed to the ref that Griffiths had just slapped an official in the wedding tackle.

the way the linesman re-acted I would suggest that contact was made - got to be a red card.

Making contact with the officials is a no-no...

This could end easily end up 0-0

I don't think the ref saw it as play had moved on and Griffiths was remonstrating about not getting a free kick. It was the linesman himself who brought it to the ref's attention. For it not to have been a red, the linesman must have watered down what happened i.e. he must have indicated the contact as incidental. When the linesman sees the replay, he may realise it was deliberate. It looked to me like Griffiths lashed out at him - violent conduct is a red whether you make contact or not, but doing it to an official is normally a red plus a lengthy ban. Presumably this will be brought up with Griffiths by the A-League on Monday morning.

Sorry, I'm not watching the game, what did Griffiths do? Did he take a swing at a linesman?
Permalink Permalink
over 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Yeah. He didn't get a free kick he wanted. As he got up off the ground, he lashed out at the linesman who was officiating the play and standing just over him. Contact was made with the lino's groin. The linesman "flinched" and raised his flag.

no, but tracking it on soccernet 0-0 at half time

i'm probably more interested in the result of Perth v Adelaide, a 'miracle' Perth win would see us stay in 5th spot

hopefully griffiths will get pinged with a ban

If HN had a say in it you can bet he would have one coming.

had to laugh when Griffiths 'tripped' over the goalkeeper when facing an open goal mouth - appeals to the linesman for a foul and the linesman ignores him ...

Yep, and I think HN would prefer to hit him with the corner flag, rather than the ban stick

Perhaps you looked at a table that included our defeat to Queensland but did not include Sydney's defeat to Melbourne. I hope CCM grab another goal. It'll hurt my fantasy team, but it will make the Jets goal difference the same as ours - meaning we'd just need to gain one point over them to get ahead of them.

The radio commentators are laughing their arses off at Jardel! 'Look at the size of him, he's huge!'
"Don't use up all your energy warming up', etc, etc.

Oh well. I think a CCM win would have suited us better, but at least Newcastle didn't win. If we beat the Jets next week, we go above them.

yeh would have preferred a ccm win, but it does look like ccm's bubble might have burst

whilst i didn't see the game, those Jets seem to be able to pick up points out of sheer bloody determination

"drawing ugly" ?

Might be the only thing he is raising in the next few days ,ouch!!
Seriously though surely an instant red card for taking a swipe at an official ,wonder if the powers that be will take a closer look at this one?

FFA guidelines state that violent conduct against a match official is punishable by a ban lasting from 1 year to life.

Any chance of a retrospective ban once the powers-that-be have seen this?

A tad extreme perhaps given the pathetic and somewhat petulant nature of the bitch slap to the nether regions ,reckon a couple of games and an apology would suffice  !!

The examples given by the FFA are pushing, striking, kicking, elbowing and head-butting. A bitch slap would fall well within the example of striking. It's the fact that a match official was the recipient that incurs the extreme punishment. Violent conduct to another player is only specified as a ban of 2 to 4 matches.

What did Di Canio get for his shove of the ref a few years back? Can anyone remember that far back?

11 match ban and 10000 GBP fine. The referees association were most upset at the lightness of the punishment.

Surely such a stringent application of the rules would go against anything happening in this case given the obvious and somewhat comical nature of the offense ,not that i'm suggesting it wasn't an offense, indeed any form of assault on an official should receive some form of punishment  however such a punitive measure as stated within the parameters you mention   would go against any natural justice !i do take your point though that it was a match official and not another player and thus increases the gravity of the offense!

You can argue the merits of who deserves what for what kind of striking and its all much of a muchness.

HOWEVER a hit the family jewels is low. A slap in the face, push in the chest yeah ok thats cheap. Its generally accepted that the groin is a sacred region for all males and to go there and hit below the belt when you are unlikely to expect it, thats just the dirtiest of dirties and I hope the c**t gets a life ban and not just cause its a referee, but if he punched/slapped anyone in that region.
