After a poor showing against the Central Coast, changes are likely to the Phoenix starting 11 for round three of football's A-League.

The Phoenix were beaten 3-0 by the Mariners and coach Ricki Herbert says they are looking to shore up their defence ahead of Sunday's clash with the Newcastle Jets in Wellington.

He says the changes will probably be more about improving formation and shape, rather than because of poor form.

Stephen Old has returned to training after missing the Mariners game through injury and he is likely to start at right back.

That will leave Cleberson and Stephen O'Dor to fight it out as the partner for Karl Dodd in the centre of the Phoenix defence.

Brazilian import Felipe is in line to get his first start for the Phoenix.

Felipe has impressed with two cameo performances off the bench and Herbert has revealed they are considering playing him from the opening whistle this weekend.

Herbert says they are hoping Felipe and his countryman Daniel can cause carnage in the midfield. He says the idea of starting Felipe is more around formation so it will need some work but he is confident it will be a positive move for the team.

Herbert will name his squad for the match against the Newcastle Jets tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Sydney FC could be without their marquee A-League football signing Juninho for up to two months.

It comes after the Brazilian suffered a shoulder injury during last weekend's match against Adelaide.

I think I would still start with Cleberson.

I'd start with O'Dor, adds more pace off the mark

agreed - if we are doing well or need a miracle I think cleberson could come on as an impact player.  But after last weeks preformance we need a solid defence that will stay in position and communicate well.

Yeh I love Clebs but I think there's a bit of a language barrier still, we need a tight defense that communicate well and he doesn't currently fit into that niche.  Felipe starting this week should allow the nix to get going with a bang as well, and if we see an early goal against like last week, its our job to pick the team up again and get that belief echoing around the stadium.

Ricky said that Felipe's problem was fitness, well even if we start him and bring him off at half time it should give the nix a chance to get in control of the game and likely ahead on the scoreboard.

There was nothing wrong with O'Dor's play once he moved in to his normal postion of Centre Back.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Yep agree with HN. Jets like to play free-flowing, allows for less physical impact and aerial domination, if they get in behind us O'Dor's pace will be more beneficial

O'Dor was about as exposed as a shirtless bloke in Antarctica. If people had covered there positions properly he would have been fine.

Agreed with loyalgunner, the only reason he got exposed was because Ferrante wasnt doing his work

How do you work that one out?

Should see O'Dor back in the middle on the weekend.
Could try Tim Brown at right back maybe
